Men’s 58th Smoky Mountain Classic

Records fell at the 58th Annual Smoky Mountain Classic in Maryville, Tennessee this past weekend, July 10-12. The legendary tournament had a new record for runs scored in a game by one team, 88, by Resmondo, and they set that record in just 3 innings against Worshams ‘AA’ team. They also set a new record for home runs in that game at 55. The old record was 44 last year. Resmondo’s Daniel Cayton set a new record for home runs in a single game by hitting 8. On the field though it was an epic semifinal matchup Saturday night between #1 Resmondo and #5 Dan Smith that changed the course of the tournament. Resmondo leading 52-38 after scoring 20 runs in the bottom of the 5th, needed 1 more run to end the game by the 15 run rule, flew out leaving the door open for Dan Smith to come back. Dan Smith did just that scoring 28 runs in the top of the 6th, and 12 more in the top of the 7th to hold on to a 78-70 win. It broke Resmondo’s 21 game winning streak at the Smoky. Dan Smith used that momentum and beat Juno in the winner’s final late Saturday night and again in the championship to win the tournament as they went undefeated. Juno finished with another 2nd place while Shore OL and Dirty Vegas who each lost in the round of 16 ended up finishing 3rd and 4th after making long runs in the loser’s bracket. This years tournament is the 4th consecutive year of record runs scored per 7 innings and on base percentage for the Smoky. Shore OL’s Joey Capparelli hit the most home runs with 28. This was Dan Smith’s 3rd Smoky win (2002, 2020, 2026) and may have been the first time in Smoky history that a team ranked outside of the top 3 has won the tournament. Travis Clark from Resmondo won the Home Run Derby Thursday over Kyle Pearson (KP23) and Mason Farmer.
