Conference USSSA opened their 20th season in Las Vegas with 38 men’s teams. As usual there were some big upsets as Hybrid2go/Franchise Athletics a California ‘C’ team knocked off Dirty Vegas (Conf-A), I-Stone (Conf-C), and WestPoint (Conf-AA) before losing to Ataraxis and Cheap Suits and finishing tied for 5th. Cheap Suits/Republic Realty lost to Bay Area Legends Saturday in the semifinals and then to WestPoint first thing Sunday morning to finish 4th. Bay Area sent the only Major team, Proton, to the loser’s bracket but lost to Ataraxis in the winner’s final by a run and then to Westpoint on Sunday morning to finish 3rd. Both games Bay Area played short handed as 4 players had to catch flights Saturday night. Westpoint mired deep in the loser’s bracket on Saturday, beat D2, BeHappy, Proton’s Major team by the run rule late Saturday night, then they knocked off Cheap Suits, Bay Area, and lost to Ataraxis in extra innings to finish 2nd. Ataraxis won a number of close games down the stretch to win the first tournament of the year beating Bay Area by 1 in that winner’s final and winning a dramatic extra innings championship game in the bottom of the 8th vs WestPoint on a two out bases loaded single by pitcher Brian Garner.
