Friday Night Recap

Topeka, Indiana teams Weather Pro and Ben’s Pretzels took down Vivid, JPS, and WestPoint Friday night.

The 2026 Windy City Classic began on Friday night June 26th at 4:30 PM central time at the McCaslin Sports Park in Carol Stream, Illinois just outside of Chicago. The 22 men’s teams played a double elimination tournament in near perfect and cooler softball weather over 3 days. They began the tournament using the Dudley Classic M Vietnam ball but later in the tournament had to switch to the Dudley Pro-M China ball when they ran out of Classic M’s. The ball was absolutely flying on the 300 foot fields although scores, pitching, and hitting were drastically affected on the main field #1 where the wind blew straight in most of the weekend.

Iconic wins on a walk off homer against Crown Athletics

At 4:30 PM there were 6 “play in” games with lower level Conference teams playing local/regional non-conference teams for the most part. On the show field #1 with the wind blowing in Iconic/Kenosha Brewing Co (WI-A) a sort of pickup team made up of some ex Precision players Jeff Keske, Mark Blaziewske, and Tyler Kahlke beat Crown Athletics (IN-C) Conference team 22-20 as Iconic hit a 3 run walk off homer to win the game in the bottom of the 7th.

Anarchy/Drawbridge/Selfmade (MI-A) grabbed a 22-8 lead on Precision/Happiness Project/BB (IL-C) after scoring 12 in the bottom of the 4th. Precision answered with 13 in the top of the 5th to make it close but Anarchy held on to win 27-23 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Adam Kaminski 5-5 and Mike Smith 4-4 led an offense that had a total of 18 extra base hits.

Comatose / S2N / Subway (WI-B) a non-conference team scored 10 in the bottom of the 2nd and beat Tafn/GoSports/PrimeThreadz (MI-B) 21-20 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Their three hitter Erin Schumacher was 4-4 in the win.

Ben’s Pretzels (IN-C), one of those upset minded Amish teams from Topeka, Indiana, played JPS/No Pressure/Blane Dunn Const (AR-B) an up and coming Conference team. Ben’s pulled off the upset 20-19 getting a double play in the bottom of the 7th to secure the win.

Over on field #3 with the wind blowing out, Weather Pro (IN-C) beat a struggling Vivid/Killbombers/LM/Cusos/HC/ALLIN (TX-A) team 40-16 after scoring 27 runs on 8 home runs in the top of the 1st and going up 30-5 on a Raber grand slam in the top of the 2nd. Weather Pro was out of their 12 homers in the 3rd inning.

The final “play in” game was a battle of Conference teams Chop Shop/Prime Threadz/RFM/Toxon (IN-B) and Maniax/H. Auto/Marucci/S2N (MN-C). Chop Shop held a 24-17 lead as they scored 9 in the top of the 5th and shut out Maniax in the bottom of the 5th. But Maniax scored 10 in the bottom of the 6th to take a 27-26 lead. Chop Shop who was the visiting team tied the game in the top of the 7th on a two out Ryan Carr single and got the go ahead run on a 2 out single by Griffin Briscoe in the top of the 8th, and held Maniax scoreless in the 7th and 8th innings to win 28-27. Chop Shop shortstop Robert Turner was 6-6 in the game with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored.

The best game Friday was Dirty Vegas and Anarchy.

The “Round of 16” was played Friday night as well and the temperatures dropped even more. Worshams/HM/S&E/Demarini/RedAthlete (NC-AA) trailed an always tough Fishers/All Hustle/Leacock Sport (PA-B) team 20-16 going into the 5th inning. But Worshams put up back to back double digit offensive innings in the 5th and 6th and held on to win 37-28 as both teams hit all 14 of their home runs. Joe Boland, Greg Popatak, and Josh Fyffe were each 5-6 in the win as they had 23 extra base hits as a team.

ShoreOL/CheapSuits/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) run ruled Iconic 40-14.

I-57 Roofing made short work of Comatose 28-3 in 3 innings as I-57 walked 9 times.

In the best game of the night DIRTY VEGAS / #TeamDawn (TX-A) base hit and used their home runs wisely to grab a 21-7 lead on Anarchy in a battle of Conference ‘A’ teams. But Anarchy scored 11 in the top of the 3rd and crawled back into the game but failed to score in the top of the 7th and Dirty Vegas held on to win 30-29. Both teams hit all of their 14 home runs and Dirty Vegas infielder Charlie Cano was 5-5 without hitting a home run to lead DV.

In the bottom half of the bracket Ben’s Pretzels were at it again upsetting Westpoint (IN-AA) 33-27 to advance to Saturday’s final 8.

DanSmith/Proton/Thunder/RoofX/RF/BD (IN-Major) was actually tied with Weather Pro 10-10 going into the bottom of the 3rd but scored 8 runs and then 20 more in the bottom of the 4th to leave Weather Pro on the field 38-17. Tyler Ervine, Josh Riley, Austyn Dawe, Tyler Storey, and Joey Miller were all on base 5-5 in the win.

#1 seeded Resmondo-SIS-Stub Term-RDD-S&S-LLC- (Fl-Major) scored 19 in the bottom of the 1st and 18 in the bottom of the 2nd to beat Chop Shop 37-7 by the 25 run rule in 2.5 innings. Resmondo was 38-44 on base in the game with 13 HR, 5 doubles, and 9 walks.

And Legendz/Envy/ThirtyFour7/Schlabach (OK-AA) beat Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) 27-7 leaving them on the field after scoring 17 runs in the bottom of the 4th. John Schlabach, and David Schwartz were each 4-4 with Schwartz hitting 4 HR.

Saturday Recap

Worshams 1st baseman Josh Cardwell made two diving stops and went 6-6 vs Shore OL.

Saturday may have been the best weather day of the year for Conference USSSA. The quarterfinals were played at 11:30 AM and 1:15 PM. Worshams scored 14 on 7 home runs including a Dagmar Pena grand slam in the top of the 1st against Shore OL. Shore responded with a Ryan Honeycutt grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd. But Worshams scored 11 on 1 (a Fyffe grand slam) in the top of the 4th and pulled away to a 41-26 upset run rule win in 6 innings. Worshams infielder Josh Cardwell led the offense reaching base 6-6 with 4 runs without hitting a home run plus he made 2 nice diving plays at 1st base.

I don’t have a lot of details about the I-57 Roofing vs Dirty Vegas quarterfinal other than I-57 won 36-25 as Jeff Roxby went 6-6 with 6 RBI.

Dan Smith trailing Ben’s Pretzels 18-11 scored 25 runs in the bottom of the 4th and shut out Ben’s in the top of the 5th to win by the 15 run rule 36-18. Jeremy Fry was 5-5 with 3 extra base hits in the win.

And Resmondo was locked in a battle with Legendz on the show field with the wind blowing in. Resmondo tied the game at 19-19 in the bottom of the 3rd inning on Everett Williams 3rd home run of the game but trailed Legendz 22-19 (10-6 on home runs) after they went down in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 4th. But the momentum shifted when Resmondo middleman Heath Barnes gunned the Legendz runner for the pitcher on a relay to 3rd base to end the top of the 5th inning. Then Resmondo got some nice infield defense by Bradley Jones at 3rd and Tyler Marshburn at shortstop to hold the Legendz offense in check while Resmondo scored 10 on 5 to take a 33-25 lead going into the 7th. Travis Clark tied the game that inning on a homer, Everett Williams hit a grand slam, and Jeremy Yates hit a 400 footer into the wind. In the top of the 7th, Legendz down 8 with 6 to hit, started the inning with 3 straight singles, but then made 3 straight outs and Resmondo won 33-27. Everett was the offensive hero going 4-5 with 4 clutch home runs into the wind and 13 RBI. On the show field he was the only one hitting high flyball homer’s while most home runs only got out of the park if they were line drives.

Everett sunk Legendz with 4 HR and 13 RBI with the wind blowing in.

In the afternoon the semifinals played out at 3 PM central time. I-57 Roofing pulled out to a 15-8 lead after 3 innings against Worshams in a battle of ‘AA’ teams. But Worshams went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 4th and I-57 put up a 10 spot to go up 25-8. Facing a possible run rule in the top of the 5th, Worshams scored 13 on 5 to climb back into the game 25-21 but I-57 scored 12 to leave them on the field 37-21. Mitch Carriger was 4-4 and Orlando Olivera had 7 RBI in the win.

In the other semifinal over on the show field, it was the showdown everyone always wants to see, Resmondo vs Dan Smith! The game did not disappoint and you can watch it here. Both teams scored early and often with Resmondo taking an 18-16 lead when Dan Smith struck out looking twice in the bottom of the 2nd including 1 strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning? In the bottom of the 3rd, down 20-16 Dan Smith again shot themselves in the foot grounding into a double play. But Dan Smith 1st baseman Tyler Ervine made a nice unassisted double play in the top of the 4th to hold Resmondo in check, and Dan Smith scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th and 5th innings to get back into the game down 36-30. However, Dan Smith put up another zero in the bottom of the 6th, Resmondo used their last homer (16th) to go up 42-32 in the top of the 7th, and Dan Smith mounted a comeback but fell 2 short in the bottom of the 7th, 42-40, and Resmondo advanced to the winner’s final to face their other rival I-57 Roofing. Tyler Marshburn was 6-6 and hit for the cycle in the win.

Dan Smith 1st baseman Tyler Ervine gets an unassisted DP to keep them in the semifinal game vs Resmondo.

Winner’s Final Recap

“Laser” Dave Johnson and Josh Kirsten were 10-10 at the top of the I-57 lineup in the winner’s final.

The winners final began right after the semifinals ended early Saturday evening. I think both I-57 and Resmondo were a little tired from playing so many long games in a row and the wind blew straight in once again on the show field #1. They also switched to the Dudley Pro-M China ball as they ran out of Classic M’s. Neither team scored much early on as I-57 using more home runs and hitting a lot of solo home runs crept out to a 14-7 lead. When Resmondo put up a 5 spot in the top of the 5th, I-57 tried to end it by the run rule but came up one homer short scoring 11 on 6 to lead 25-12. With a 2nd life and a bunch of home runs to hit, everyone at the park and watching at home assumed Resmondo would refocus and climb back into the game, but instead they put up a zero in the top of the 6th. Resmondo did hold I-57 scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, but trailing 25-12 with 11 left to hit, they managed 8 runs and I-57 who has had their number in winner’s finals this year won 25-20. The game ended on a spectacular diving catch by I-57 center fielder Josh Kirsten in the right center gap back by the fence. David Johnson and Kirsten at the top of the I-57 lineup were a combined 10-10 on base with 6 RBI and 8 runs scored in the victory.

Josh Kirsten’s diving catch in right center against Pearson ended the game!

Loser’s Bracket Recap

Shore OL takes on Dan Smith and pitcher Justin Mucciarelli in the 5th place game.

The loser’s bracket played out all day on Saturday. In the top half of the loser’s bracket Anarchy beat Maniax, Comatose, Ben’s Pretzels, Legendz 37-36, and Worshams 29-28 to finish 4th. And in the lower half of the loser’s bracket Shore OL beat TAFN, Dirty Vegas 34-33, Dan Smith 32-22, and Anarchy 36-16 to make it to Sunday where they brought back 3 teams.

In the loser’s final at 8 am Sunday morning Resmondo’s Heath Barnes hit a grand slam to as they scored 11 on 6 in the top of the 1st against Shore OL. In the bottom of the 1st Shore OL scored 4 on 2 but hit into a 6-10-3 double play. In the bottom of the 2nd Shore OL grabbed a 14-12 lead on a Carlos Abrigo 2 run homer and the teams were even on homers at 7-7. In the top of the 3rd Resmondo went off, scoring 21 runs including a Kyle Pearson grand slam as they scored 15 runs before they made their first out! Shore OL did avoid run rules the rest of the way but neither team could score with the home runs gone and Resmondo held on to a 45-38 win. There were 92 hits and 32 home runs in the game. Tyler Marshburn and Cory Briggs were each on base 7-7 in the win and Kyle Pearson drove in 12 runs.

Championship Recap

Middles always open between Resmondo and I-57 Roofing.

In the championship game a fresh I-57 team jumped out to a 19-2 lead using 7 of their home runs in the bottom of the 1st. Resmondo tried to play catch up but never could score a double digit inning and I-57 left them on the field scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th to win 39-22 by the 15 run rule on a David Yoder 3 run homer. It was I-57’s final home run left (16th). This was I-57’s first tournament win of the season after being “double dipped” by Resmondo in Texas and Cincinnati. I-57 continues to be the top ‘AA’ team in the country. The Conference USSSA season continues at the great Smoky Mountain Classic July 10-12.

Long Bomber of the Week!

Resmondo’s Bradley Jones is my Long Bomber of the Week. There was just something different about this bomb he hit in the winner’s final with the wind blowing in.

Team by Team Notes

1st Place – I-57/Beloli SIS/All Hustle/JBL/Axe

IL-AA  Record  5-0

I-57 Roofing continues to be the class of the field in the ‘AA’ division as they challenge Resmondo at every event they play it seems. This week they played without Jordan Spaulding but picked up Billy Wright who played well. I-57 is currently 3rd in the points and has a chance of finishing ahead of 1 or more of the 4 Major teams which would put 3 major teams on same side of the USSSA Major World Series bracket!

I-57 picked up Billy Wright to play 3B.

2nd Place – Resmondo-SIS-Stub Term-RDD-S&S-LLC-

FL-Major  Record  4-2

Resmondo finished 2nd but are still by far the #1 ranked team in the country and have a huge lead in the Conference points standings. Resmondo played without Phil Matte and Travis Clark actually tweaked a groin on Sunday covering 1st base on a grounder but should be fine for the Smoky. They are using the Hardcore ball at the Smoky so Resmondo will be a heavy favorite to go undefeated and win all of their games by the run rule. Since the Smoky changed to the Hardcore ball Resmondo is 18-0 and only played 2 – 7 inning games. A 73-61 win over Juno and a 58-50 win over Proton. They are averaging 88 runs scored per 7 times at bat at the Smoky over the last 3 years. Tyler Marshburn at .900, Brad Reckart .857, and Everett Williams 24 RBI in 21 Plate Appearances led the teams offense.

3rd Place – ShoreOL/CheapSuits/Str8play/Rebel

CA-Major  Record  5-2

Shore OL was tripped up by Worshams in the quarterfinals but recovered to finish 3rd after a nice Saturday win over Dan Smith. They played without Brian Dezern (too many weeks of softball in a row because of Team USA) and without Marc Wik who reinjured his leg in Utah. They moved rookie Robbie Scott to lead off where he did a great job. Radich was picking them at 1st base. And Brandon Streets who normally is among the league leaders in on base percentage is struggling.

4th Place – Anarchy/Drawbridge/Selfmade

MI-A  Record  6-2

Anarchy played Dirty Vegas tough on Friday night but lost by one. Then they played all day on Saturday to finish an impressive 4th. On the way they beat two ‘AA’ teams. Mike Smith led the team in on base at .813, Sir Francis Fisk was .757 with 41 RBI, and pitcher Kevin Miller pitched most of the weekend leading them to those upset wins.

3B Adam Kaminski, SS Chase Churchill, MI Nick Folo, 2B Jake Hathaway.

More Teams

Legendz finished 2-2 after falling to Resmondo in a good game.

Dan Smith with a 5th place finish. The offense has not been able to step on the gas when needed and the defense makes untimely mistakes.

WestPoint’s Terry Lambright is leading the nation in on base percentage at .841

Fisher’s went 2-2
