The annual Space City Classic was played on June 6-7 at the Ballpark at League City in Houston, Texas. There were 15 teams from 7 different states and 6 of the teams were from Conference USSSA. The double elimination tournament began on Saturday and finished on Sunday. They used the Dudley Classic M (China stamped) ball which softened up in the humidity and teams struggled to hit home runs in the wind during the day. But it did bring out the defense. Legendz (OK-AA), the on paper favorite, beat Houston 59ers 46-9, Vivid 37-1, and Primetime 21-12 to make it to the winner’s final. There they met Dirty Vegas who beat Lightning 18-12, RoofTop Solutions 29-28, and JPS 29-17. In that winner’s final Saturday night Legendz scored 8 runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 18-18. In the bottom of the 7th, Travis Tucker walked for Dirty Vegas, Steven Paramore singled, and Ben Dunn hit a walk off homer to win it 20-18!
In the loser’s bracket JPS (AR-B) finished 4th after losing to Primetime 28-12. Then Legendz beat Primetime 26-5 to make it back to the championship where they did force the “if” game against Dirty Vegas 24-8 before losing 23-17. Salvador Rivas Jr. and pitcher Spenser Washington were each 5-5 on base in the final game and the two teams combined for just 11 home runs.
