Friday Recap

The 2026 Conference season is underway.

The 2026 Conference USSSA season began in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Big League Dreams and Arroyo Grande sports parks. There were 15 men’s conference teams and 32 teams overall. The “Round of 32” began Friday morning at 8 am over at the Arroyo Grande park in Henderson, Nevada because only 3 fields were available at the BLD due to construction on the other 3 fields and the women’s dual was being played there. The Arroyo Grande park had no accessible power so in order to get the livestream up and running I spent my Friday morning renting generators and setting them up, so I missed most of those games. The tournament was seeded by team classification (Major down to C), then conference points within each classification, then USSSA points within each classification. So, the “Round of 32” was basically one conference team against one non-conference team in each teams first game. R1/WWS/JJ sports (CO-B), ACS/Easton (FL-A), BeHappy/StandardPlumbing (AZ-AA), CutThroat/ImpactEdge/CourseyRealty (CA-B), I-57 Roofing/Beloli SIS/All Hustle (IL-AA), GREINERT – KOVAL – BAF (MD-A), Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A), and Juno Athletics / LSR (NJ-Major) all won their game against their non-conference opponents by the run rule as the Dudley Pro-M ball was absolutely flying on the 300 foot fields which played more like 275 foot fields. VIP/WICKED SPORTS (CA-B) and GTL/Legacy/Dirty (WA-B) beat their non-conference opponents by 9 and 11 respectively. Non-Conference SNW/My AZ Lawyers/Impact/LM Sports (AZ-B) beat conference team Combat MFG (OK-B) 30-15. Bat to the Bone non-conference (CA-C) upset Apex/CBB Athletics (CO-B) 26-24. Non-Conference A&M/DavisTrucking/SupremeThreads/BC (CA-B) beat Conference team Maniax/H. Auto/Marucci/S2N (MN-C) 30-9. Magz Premier (CA-B), a non-conference team, upset GemGlove/Anarchy/T21/D2/BMasters (UT-B) 24-7. Non-Conf Turnco Machine LLC (CA-B) beat conference team Desert Heat Auto (AZ-B) 39-31. And in the only battle of non-conference ‘A’ teams, Shut-D (NV-B) knocked off CLASSY / SLM / PROTON / NVH (AZ-A) 27-11.

Arroyo Grande Sports Park

League games then took over the park at Arroyo Grande and the “Round of 16” was played at the Big League Dreams Yankee and Fenway fields on Friday night with their brand new artificial turf. In those games, ACS/Easton the new ‘A’ team out of Florida overcame an early 25-9 deficit against R1/WWS/JJ Sports by scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the 4th and 12 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 29-27 lead. But the game was tied at 29-29 going into the 7th inning where R1 outscored ACS 8-4 to win 37-33. Both teams used all 12 home runs and R1’s Derrick Thompson and Daevion King were 6-6 in the game. King had 8 RBI. BeHappy with a new mix of their top players from their 2025 ‘A’ team, Daontre Porter – Matt Brady – and Justin Lutheran from last year’s Chick-fil-a ‘AA’ team, plus SS Joel Sanchez from Sports Reach, pitcher Kyle Johnson from Westpoint, and Zack Smith from Bay Area Legends, ended up run ruling SNW 29-14 in 5 innings. They scored 12 runs in the bottom of the 1st and left SNW on the field in the 5th. Leadoff hitter Blake Lively, Daontre Porter, and Joel Sancehz were all 4-4 as every player in the lineup except 1, hit a home run. CutThroatSports, last years ‘B’ team that finished 2nd at the ‘A’ Worlds and 4th at the ‘B’, run ruled Bat to the Bone 39-24 in 6 innings, scoring 11 in the first and 19 in the 3rd. Rookie right fielder Kolby Force and shortstop Dylan Husted were each 6-6 and pitcher Kyle Harmon had 9 RBI in the victory. A&M/Davis Trucking pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament beating the I-57 Roofing ‘AA’ team 40-31. A&M made I-57 pay for poor home run management in that game. Greinert/Koval which is Chris Greinert’s new ‘A’ team beat Magz Premier 24-4 in 4 innings by the 20 run mercy rule. Primetime after scoring 10 runs in the 1st inning vs Turnco Machine wound up finding themselves tied at 27-27 in the bottom of the 6th and tied again in the bottom of the 7th 30-30 after Turnco scored 11 in the 6th. In the bottom of the 7th after 2 early outs, Daniel Cayton doubled, Ira Brown was intentionally walked, and Jarvis Riggins hit a walk off single to “survive and advance” 31-30. Ira Brown was on base 6-6 in the win and Jarvis Riggins had 8 RBI. GTL scored 5 on 2 in the top of the 1st inning against VIP/Wicked in a battle of Conference ‘B’ teams and was up 10-9 after 2 complete innings. In the top of the 3rd the VIP center fielder robbed GTL’s Joe Acevedo of a home run to end the inning. In the top of the 5th with GTL up 19-14 Blake Madewell hit the last of their 8 home runs but they adjusted with a bunch of doubles in a row to go up 22-14. VIP couldn’t score when home runs were gone and GTL won 27-16. Leadoff hitter Austin Breer and right fielder Justin Waldher were each 5-5 in the win. And Juno Athletics, the only Major team in the tournament scored 14 runs on just 3 home runs in the bottom of the 1st against the local fan favorites Shut-D and rolled to a 38-12 win.

Saturday Recap

Primetime’s Aaron Jackson with the walk off homer vs Greinert.

The quarterfinals were then played at 3 pm pacific time back over at the Arroyo Grande fields. All 4 games were played at the same time so I chose the ‘A’ vs ‘A’ game to cover, which was Greinert vs Primetime. Greinert pitcher Eric Kellar got a strikeout looking and 3 foul outs in the game and Greinert hitters used up a bunch of their 12 home runs in taking an early lead 24-3 and 11 to 1 on home runs. Primetime to their credit, sort of let the game come to them, and got a double play to end the top of the 6th inning, scored 6 on 1 homer and 2 out clutch hitting in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 28-28, and walked off Greinert 30-29 using their last two home runs (Kyle Weseloh and Aaron Jackson) to start the bottom of the 7th. Mike Williams was 5-5 with 3 extra base hits, 5 RBI, and 5 runs scored in the win. In other quarterfinal action BeHappy hit 13 home runs in 3 innings, scoring 19 in the bottom of the 1st and 13 in the bottom of the 3rd to beat R1 33-12 in 4 innings. Danny Higa, Daontre Porter, Matt Brady, Zack Smith, and Joel Sanchez were all 4-4. GTL put up 3 zeroes against Juno but did go 7 innings as Juno won 25-12 out homering GTL 8-5. Bishop Harris was 5-5 with 7 RBI in the win. And CutThroatSports was locked in a close battle with A&M as both teams scored at least 2 runs in every inning and went to the 7th with A&M trailing 24-23. A&M scored 6 runs on 2 homers to go up 29-24 in the top of the 7th. And CutThroatSports after 2 of their first 3 batters made outs, got singles from Josh Tallent and Ryan Murphy, walks from Daunte Freeman and Martin Soares Jr., and a grand slam walk off homer from rookie Kolby Force to win 30-29! Soares and Force were each 5-6 on base in the game and Daunte Freeman was 5-5 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

Zack Smith hitting for BeHappy against CutThroat in the semifinals Saturday night.

The semifinals move back over to Fenway Field at Big League Dreams Saturday evening. BeHappy’s Zack Smith hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 3rd to put them up 21-20 on CutThroatSports, making CutThroat pay for 2 costly errors. Then the CutThroat defense stepped up as Owens at 1st base made a great diving stop and BeHappy went down in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 5th after CutThroat had scored 11 runs in the top half to go up 32-29. In the top of the 7th Juan Castenada hit a 3 run inside the park homer to put CutThroat up 44-34 and CutThroat finished off the upset 44-36. Lukas Owens was 7-7 and Juan Castenada 6-7 on base in the win as Kolby Force and Ryan Murphy drove in 7 runs each.

Ira Brown hits middle for Primetime vs Juno in the semifinals.

In the next semifinal it was Primetime and Juno. There are new rules for the Major division in 2026 and that is in games with a Major team, both teams can now hit 16 home runs instead of 14. And the run rules are 25 after 3, 20 after 4, and 15 after 5. Primetime scored 7 in the top of the 1st but went down in order 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd and trailed 17-7 after 2 innings. They climbed back into the game in the 3rd and 4th innings scoring 8 runs on 3 homer’s with 2 outs as Edmund Cheatham hit a 3 run bomb to take a 20-19 lead. Going into the 6th though it was 27-24 Primetime but Juno still had 10 home runs to hit and they walked Primetime down hitting 9 home runs, scoring 18 runs, and leaving them on the field on a Buddy Wolf grand slam 42-27.

CutThroat gave Juno a game in the winner’s final.

In the winner’s bracket final later Saturday night Juno jumped on CutThroatSports scoring 11 on 6 homers in the top of the 1st and held CutThroat to just 5 runs through the first 3 innings and led 19-5 after 3 complete. In the bottom of the 4th the CutThroat 3rd baseman Alex Ginestra hit a grand slam in an 8 run inning to pull to within 20-9. But Juno scored 11 more on 3 home runs in the top of the 6th including a grand slams by Michal Rainer and Matt Valencia and CutThroat who still had 8 home runs to hit only hit 2 the rest of the way and lost 37-26. Filip Washington was 6-6, Don Walsh 5-6, Dan Herren 5-6, Mason Farmer 5-5, and Cody Herring 5-5 in the win.

Loser’s Bracket Recap

I-57 had scores of 60 and 50 in the loser’s bracket.

The loser’s bracket was primarily played at the Arroyo Grande fields and the scores were off the charts even though it was 90+ degrees and the Pro-M balls were sitting in the heat. GemGlove beat Berries 25-5, ACS 41-7, and SNW 30-22 before A&M dropped down and beat them 25-19. And an upset I-57 took out their frustrations on Supreme Electric 60-4, Tallon Painting 45-18, R1 58-8, A&M 34-29, and Primetime 33-8 to win the top half of the loser’s bracket and advance to Sunday. In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket Turnco Machine and VIP made short runs before GTL and Greinert dropped down and sent them home. Then Greinert beat GTL 42-28 and upset BeHappy 31-11 to win the lower half of the loser’s bracket and advance to Sunday.

Sunday Recap

I-57 Roofing takes on Greinert in the 4th place game Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning at 8 AM I-57 went up 11-5 against Greinert on a Jordan Spaulding grand slam in the 1st inning as both teams turned early double plays. Then I-57 got one of 1st baseman Nic Perkins patented unassisted double plays in the top of the 2nd and then scored 20 runs on 6 home runs in the bottom of the 2nd. I-57 continued the onslaught and run ruled Greinert 37-10. Next, the loser’s final may have been the best game of the tournament. I-57 slugger Olivera hit a 3 run shot in the top of the 1st but CutThroat responded with three 3 run shots in the bottom half and it was tied at 9-9. In the top of the 2nd Jeff Roxby and David Yoder each hit 2 out 3 run homers to go up 22-9. CutThroat again answered scoring 19 runs on 6 home runs in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd I-57 tied the game at 28-28 on an Olivera grand slam and I-57 used their last homer on a 3 run shot by Marcus Yoder to go up 38-30 (14-9 on home runs). In the bottom of the 4th I-57 left fielder Jordan Spaulding made a nice leaping catch against the Fenway Green Monster and CutThroats infield defense made 3 great plays in the top of the 5th (SS Husted, 3B Ginestri, MI Castenada) to shut out I-57 who was hitting it down to keep it in the park. In the bottom of the 5th I-57 middle infielder Jeff Roxby made an incredible play to his right and threw across his body to 1st for the out, but CutThroat tied the game 38-38 on a Daunte Freeman 3 run homer. In the top of the 6th I-57 hit 9 base hits to go up 47-39 and in the bottom of the 6th CutThroat hit 2 solo homers to start the inning and trailed 47-44 going into the 7th. In the top of the 7th I-57 added 1 run to go up 48-44 but hit 2 home runs for outs. In the bottom of the 7th CutThroat got a Freeman single, Castenada walk, Force single, Lewis single, and an Owens single before their first out. Then Kyle Harmon singled to tie the game and Nick Thompson singled to win it 49-48. There were 97 runs, 103 hits, and 28 home runs in the game. Joe Lewis, Kyle Harmon, and Nick Thompson were each 6-7 in the upset victory.

I-57 left fielder Jordan Spaulding makes a nice catch on the fence vs CutThroat.

The temperatures started to heat up some into the 80’s for the championship game. CutThroat pitcher Kyle Harmon had to leave to catch a flight and the backups walked too many batters as Juno went up 6-4, 20-12, and 32-12 in the first 4 innings and Juno left CutThroat on the field 32-12 in that 4th inning. Filip Washington, who was MVP, was 5-5, Dan Herren 4-4, Bishop Harris 4-4, Buddy Wolf 4-4 and Matt Valencia 4-4 in the win. It was a solid start to the season, the new turf was nice although a little bouncy, and the heat was bad but tolerable due to the low humidity. Conference USSSA continues April 16-19 at the Hall of Fame Classic in Viera, Florida which will feature all 4 Major teams and all 5 ‘AA’ teams!

Championship Sunday!

Team by Team Notes

1st Place – Juno Athletics/LSR

NJ-Major  Record  6-0

Juno had a good start to the season, took care of business in a professional manner, and earned max points (240). Mark Carucci was serving his 3 tournament suspension from the scuffle he and Str8plays Danny Hakker started at the Major World Series back in October, so they will return after the Hall of Fame Classic. I thought Greg Connell struggled in his debut with his new team, Bishop Harris and Mason Farmer look to be taking the next step towards being elite players, and it looks like outfielders Matt Valencia – Erik Nevoso – and Cody Herring are battling for two starting spots alongside Buddy Wolf.

Greg Connell made his debut with Juno after 18 some odd years with Resmondo.

2nd Place – CutThroat/ImpactEdge/CourseyRealty

WA-B  Record  5-2

CutThroatSports is a dangerous ‘B’ team with the addition of Juan Casteneda and Rookie of the Year candidate Kolby Force among others. CutThroat and Fisher’s will probably be the top of the ‘B’ division all year long.

CutThroat’s RF Kolby Force is an early rookie of the year candidate.

3rd Place – I-57 Roofing/Beloli SIS/All Hustle

IL-AA  Record  7-2

I-57 semi-salvaged their tournament after losing on poor home run management in the 2nd round. They put up some incredible numbers scoring 44.1 runs per game while only giving up 20.3. I-57 will be challenged this year in the ‘AA’ division but are at the top of it, and they should pull their usual occasional upsets of the Major teams, especially on 300 and 325 foot fields.

4th Place – Greinert – Koval – BAF

MD-A  Record  5-2

Chris Greinert’s new ‘A’ team played without him as he recovers from complications caused by an off season surgery. He should be back playing in June if not before knowing him. We wish him the best in his recovery. The new team played well after losing to Primetime on a walk off homer in the 3rd round. They recovered to beat VIP/Wicked, GTL, and upset BeHappy’s ‘AA’ team to make it to Sunday and finish 4th. There is some new young talent on this team from Cole Steverson’s Hybrid team that upset a couple of higher level teams in Las Vegas a year ago. Cole is also with the Greinert team this year.

More Teams

Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) 3-2

Primetime picked up Daniel Cayton then after Las Vegas released him to play for Resmondo.

BeHappy/StandardPlumbing (AZ-AA) 3-2

Joel Sanchez bringing his own brand of team chemistry to BeHappy.

GTL has a nice ‘B’ entry in the Conference again this year who should score some points in the west coast events.

VIP/Wicked is also a Conference ‘B’ team who picked up some players from the Free Agent Page to fill out the roster this year.
