Friday Night Recap

Fishhead takes on Anarchy Friday night.

Friday:

The Maryland Major, called The Battle on the Chesapeake, was played this past weekend at the Bachmann Sports Park in Glen Burnie, MD which is just outside of Baltimore. They played on 300 foot dirt/grass fields with the Dudley Classic M “Vietnam” stamped ball. Quite frankly the ball was way too much and seems to be the same core as the Pro-M Vietnam ball that was banned except this one has a leather cover. The weather was warm in the afternoons but nice in the mornings and evenings. The double elimination tournament began on Friday at 5:30 PM with 16 teams from 10 different states and there were 5 Conference USSSA teams in attendance.

SAL-8/PHP/BA (VA-A) beat a feisty Dynasty/Leacock Sports (PA-C) team 31-30 in the bottom of the 8th inning after a 1 out triple and two intentional walks led to a bases loaded grounder to shortstop and the shortstop threw it wide of home plate and the winning run scored. Anarchy/Drawbridge/Selfmade (MI-A) scored 12 on 3 in the bottom of the 1st against local ‘C’ team FISH HEAD/ DCI/ BELOLI/ HARTTUFF. Then they scored 12 more in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 24-9. But Fish Head who scored in every inning never fully went away and Anarchy had to hold on 30-27 as both teams used all 12 of their home runs. Adam Kaminksi and Michael Smith were a combined 10-10 with 7 extra base hits for Anarchy. Sal-8 and Anarchy then stayed on that same field #3 and as the lights came on and the sun went down and they combined to score 90 runs! Sal-8 scored 11 in the 1st, 9 in the 2nd, 11 in the 3rd, and 10 in the 4th to go up 41-32 after 4 innings. With the home runs gone the scoring went down the rest of the way but Sal-8 went on to win 52-38 in 7 innings. For Sal-8 leadoff hitter Seth Mosely was 8-8 with 8 hits, 2 doubles, a triple, and 2 home runs. He scored 7 runs. And George Barnett was 7-7 with 8 RBI. For Anarchy their leadoff hitter Jake Hathaway was on base 7-7. So, Sal-8 punched their ticket to the Saturday final 4.

In the 2nd quarter of the bracket AUIT/DeMieri Properties/Big Dawg (NY-B) and the local Nitro Circus / Thurston Wyatt / LBT ‘C’ team played the “Game of the Week” which can be watched in condensed form here. Early on AUIT took full advantage of 3 Nitro Circus misplays and jumped out to a 22-12 lead. Nitro Circus came back, batting around the order in the top of the 4th, to make it 23-22. AUIT used the last of their 8 home runs in the bottom of the 5th when Evan Hirschbaum hit a grand slam to make it 40-33. He also had 4 doubles in the game. Nitro Circus came back to make it interesting in the 6th and 7 innings but a fly out ended the game in the top of the 7th with AUIT holding on to a 42-41 victory. Westpoint (IN-AA) the #2 seed in the tournament made quick work of DHZ/BootheBell/Fatboys/JNSD (VA-C) 32-8 scoring 17 in the bottom of the 1st and 15 in the bottom of the 2nd to win in 3 innings. The first 3 hitters in the WestPoint lineup, Canaan Baum, Terry Lambright, and Tyler Cowles were on base a combined 12-12 and the first 6 batters total were 23-24. Then as the sun went down and Westpoint played AUIT in the quarterfinals. WestPoint scored 6 on 2 in the top of the 1st and AUIT answered with 12 on 4. The game was tight through the early innings with WestPoint taking a 34-25 lead after an 11 run 4th inning. Then with the home runs gone, WestPoint shut out AUIT in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to win 41-27. WestPoint had 44 hits and 14 home runs in the win. Terry Lambright, who currently leads the Conference in on base percentage at .859, was 7-7 on base in the game with 3 doubles. 4 hitter Tyler Cowles was also 7-7 and Logan Rogers was 6-6 in the win.

In 3rd quarter of the winner’s bracket back on field #5 it was the New Jersey ‘C’ team DreamWorn/Lunar Steel who is a Conference team knocking off FORSS/PTG (NJ-C) 36-31 after they were down 7-0 in the 1st inning and scored 12 in the top of the 2nd. Two hitter Niko Bedell, 5 hitter Jack Caroll, and 7 hitter Peter Gilson were perfect on base in the win with Caroll hitting for the cycle. Next Chick-fil-A / Slugger / BAF (VA-B) scored 17 in the bottom of the 3rd to go up 28-9 on Douglas Realty/PNS/BAF (MD-C) and shut out Douglas late to win 31-22. Leadoff hitter Richard Fields and last batter Cameron Naraval were a combined 11-11 on base and Fields drove in 7 runs for Chick-fil-a. To cap the night on field #5 Dreamworn overcame an early 17-7 deficit to beat Chick-fil-a 30-25 as both teams hit all 8 of their home runs. Cory Heitler and Kenny Meagan were each 5-5 on base in the win which put Dreamworn in the Saturday final 4.

And in the bottom part of the bracket on the main field #1 The Empire / DirtDogs / RDD (CT-B) beat LVT/Luck Beats Talent (MD-B) (Pudge Issenocks team) 20-16. And Juno Athletics/LSR (NJ-Major) the #1 seed beat L.D.U. (MD-D) in 4 innings 31-9 as Donnie Walsh, Bishop Harris, and Erik Nevoso were all perfect on base in the game. And then Juno advanced the final 4 with a 38-18 win over The Empire in the nightcap as John Williams, Mason Farmer, Matt Valencia, and Michal Rainer were all perfect on base and Donnie Walsh drove in 8 runs.

Friday in Maryland always has a good softball playing crowd.

AUIT and Nitro Circus played the “Game of the Week”.

Final 4 Recap

Juno takes on Dream Worn in the semifinals Saturday.

Saturday:

On Saturday the semifinals were played just after noon in warm sunshine and humidity. Juno beat Dreamworn on field #1 with the wind blowing in 25-5 in 4 innings as Filip Washington, Greg Connell, Matt Valencia, and Bishop Harris were all perfect on base. Over on field #2 it was WestPoint leading Sal-8 8-6 after one inning as both teams got a strike out looking and WestPoint had a 12-10 lead going into the 3rd inning. Sal-8 then grabbed a 13-12 lead scoring with two outs in the top of the 3rd inning. But the wheels came off the wagon for Sal-8 in the bottom of the 3rd with errors, misplays, and a few walks leading to a 24 run inning for WestPoint and they went on to leave Sal-8 on the field in the bottom of the 4th 40-17 using just 9 of their 14 home runs. The entire WestPoint lineup was 4-5, 3-4, or 4-4 as they went 43-53 in the game with the 9 home runs and 11 doubles.

Gavin Lambright hits a grand slam vs Sal-8 in the semifinals.

Winner’s Final Recap

Canaan Baum had 13 RBI for WestPoint in the winner’s final.

The winner’s final was played around 5 PM Saturday with the wind blowing in. But that didn’t stop the scoring with this ball. Juno scored 7 on 4 home runs in the top of the 1st as Tyler Cowles in right center made a nice running catch to end the inning. WestPoint scored 4 on no homers in the bottom of the 1st and hit one line drive so hard that it hit Juno pitcher Mason Farmer in the middle of his chest. Farmer, who is as tough as they come, stayed in the game. In the top of the 2nd Juno separated by scoring 14 runs on 6 more home runs to go up 21-4. WestPoint never had the double digit inning they needed to truly climb back into the game and Juno scored 14 more in the top of the 4th to go up 37-20 on a Michal Rainer grand slam. WestPoint scored just enough to extend the game in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings but never fully caught up and down 15 going into the bottom of the 7th put up a zero to lose 48-33. Filip Washington was 6-7 with 8 RBI, Donnie Walsh 7-7, and Greg Connell 6-7 with 11 RBI in the win. Canaan Baum at lead off for WestPoint was 5-6 with 5 extra base hits, a grand slam, and 13 RBI in the loss.

Mason Farmer takes one in the chest.

Loser’s Bracket Recap

Above, Dynasty was putting it on WestPoint in the loser’s bracket finals until the rain hit and WestPoint grabbed the momentum.

The loser’s bracket played out all day on Saturday. In the top of the loser’s bracket Dynasty, the ‘C’ team from Pennsylvania, made an epic run. They beat Fish Head 28-25, The Empire 21-14, Chick-fil-a 29-16, and Sal-8 25-14. In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket AUIT knocked off FORSS 36-31, LVT 27-19, and Dreamworn 23-15 to make it to the 4th place game where Dynasty beat them 30-28 in a close one.

In the loser’s bracket finals Dynasty was playing some great infield defense and with the wind blowing in they led WestPoint 6-2 after 2 innings. Dynasty continued to play a perfect game up 17-10 when a rain and lightning storm hit and delayed the game for an hour. When play resumed the wind had gone away, the hard dusty field was nice and watered down, and WestPoint regrouped to score 18 runs in the bottom of the 5th on 8 home runs to grab a 28-22 lead. Neither team scored a run after that and WestPoint advanced to the championship. Terry Lambright and Brock Frentzell were each 5-5 in the win.

Championship Recap

Juno slugger Donnie Walsh hits a creature to deep center field.

In the championship game under the lights on field #1, WestPoint came out and scored 2 on a single by Baum and an inside the park homer by Terry Lambright but ended the half inning up only 2-0 after grounding into a double play. In the bottom of the 1st with the ball hardening up even more as the temperatures cooled off, Juno put up 18 runs on 7 homers and never looked back as they left WestPoint on the field in the bottom of the 3rd 33-7 by the 25 run rule. It was Juno’s 2nd tournament win of the season (Las Vegas). Washington, Connell, Herren, Farmer, Wolf, and Rainer were all 4-4 on base in the championship game. The Conference USSSA season continues in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday, June 12th.

Long Bomber of the Week!

Chelsea Dzrabek (not sure I am spelling that right) from Juno women’s team is the Long Bomber of the Week. Witnesses say she hit one over 400 feet! She also had 12 home runs total in the tournament. On the men’s side Donnie Walsh from Juno hit one in the championship that we couldn’t even see land.

Maryland Results and Awards

MVP – Juno pitcher Mason Farmer

Defensive MVP – Juno shortstop Michal Rainer

Offensive MVP – Terry Lambright from WestPoint

Team by Team Notes

1st Place – Juno Athletics / LSR

NJ-Major  Record  5-0

This was Juno’s 2nd tournament win of the season. Washington, Wolf, and Connell were all over .850 on base. Connell and Walsh hit double digit home runs. Michal Rainer was the most consistent infielder in the tournament on the hard fields and won defensive MVP. Mason Farmer was .778 on base as the pitcher and won MVP.

Greg Connell had a breakout offensive weekend with a .875 on base percentage.

2nd Place – WestPoint

IN-AA  Record  4-2

WestPoint did what they were supposed to do and finish 2nd while giving Juno one good game. They were missing shortstop Ryan Mcclanahan. Terry Lambright at .931 and Brock Frentzel at .825 led the offense. Gavin Lambright and Neil Smith did the pitching.

3rd Place – Dynasty/Leacock Sports

PA-C  Record  5-2

Dynasty gave us deja vu as it was two years ago a Fisher’s Softball from the same area of Pennsylvania made a run at the Maryland Major and almost made the championship game. This year Dynasty did the same thing as a ‘C’ team. They played great defense, had timely hitting and power, and never gave up, playing 7 long drawn out games to finish 3rd. Some of these guys are playing for Team Pennsylvania in the upcoming Border Battle.

Dynasty CF makes a nice catch.

4th Place – AUIT/DeMieri Properties/Big Dawg

NY-B  Record  4-2

AUIT is one of the better non-conference ‘B’ teams in the country. They are from New York and were missing a number of players but played well.
