Friday Night Recap
XR Combat pulled a little upset over F1’s Friday night to open the tournament.
Conference USSSA returned to the USA Baseball Complex in Millington, Tennessee for “The Memorial” Major for the 2nd year in a row. They played on the all artificial turf baseball fields with varying home run fence distances and used a very lively Dudley Hardcore ball. All 4 Major teams, 3 of the top ‘AA’ teams, and 14 teams overall from 12 different states participated with 11 of the teams being from the Conference. Because Juno Athletics/LSR (NJ-Major) had only played 2 tournaments and Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S (FL-Major) had only played 3 tournaments the seeding based off of the 2025 Conference Points Standings made it so ALL FOUR major teams were in the lower half of the bracket. As luck would have it, all 3 ‘AA’ teams were in the top half, lucky them. And with a 14 team double elimination tournament the #1 seed Proton/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) and #2 seed I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA (IL-AA) received 1st round byes. The tournament began Friday at 4:30 PM Central time. XR/Stellas Wish/Combat MFG a new Conference ‘C’ team from Missouri playing in the stadium, shut down F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar (TX-TBD) in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th innings to pull off the upset 19-12. There were only 5 home runs hit in the game and XR was led by Shawn Rogers and Stephen Henderson who were each on base 5-5 and Henderson drove in 5 runs. #3 seed Westpoint (IN-AA) run ruled JCWraps/ARGM (AR-C) 26-5. #5 seed Resmondo run ruled GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andrews (AL-B) 38-7 in 4 innings scoring 18 runs in the top of the 4th and they out homered GOE 11-3. Resmondo pitcher Travis Clark was 5-5 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Heath Barnes was also 5-5 as 21 of Resmondo’s 34 hits were for extra bases. And RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major) made quick work of Rivalz/ASC/Wicked Mitts (TN-B) winning 26-6 in 4 innings and just 3 at bats. Arlis Miller, Andrew Collins, Joey Miller, Faron Fry, and Logan Rogers were all perfect on base in the win. At 6:15 PM on the big field #2 Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) beat SNI/LOB/DEMARINI (FL-A) 27-23 as both teams scored at least 2 runs in every inning. Reach out homered SNI 10-5 though as leadoff hitter Steele Lewis went 5-5 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. And in the stadium Juno Athletics/LSR (NJ-Major) had their hands full with Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A). Primetime scored 8 in the bottom of the 1st and 15 in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 23-10. When Juno managed just 3 runs over the next 3 innings, Primetime had a chance to run rule them in the bottom of the 5th but put up a zero. Juno, having received a gift of a second chance put up 7 runs on 3 HR in the top of the 6th and added 7 more runs on 3 more home runs in the top of the 7th to grab a 27-25 lead. Primetime had one last chance in the bottom of the 7th but put up a zero after grounding into a double play and they left 6 home runs on the table. Josh Riley was 5-6 and hit for the cycle in the victory for Juno.
Field #1 – 310-335-380-335-310
Field #2 – 335-365-370-365-330
Field #3 – 340-348-380-333-307
Field #4 – 300-335-385-335-315
Field #5 – 318-345-385-335-310
Field #6 – 305-340-395-335-315
Field #7 – 315-350-385-335-315
The “Round of 8” was also played on Friday at 6:15 PM and 8 PM. Westpoint run ruled XR/Stellas back on field #6 18-3. In a battle of ‘AA’ powers I-57 Roofing scored 10 in the bottom of the 1st inning and jumped out to a 15-6 lead on Reach/DeMarini. Reach never really got the offense going in this one as Mitch Carriger’s knuckle ball danced I-57 to a 29-13 run rule win leaving Reach on the field in an 8 run 6th. I-57 leadoff hitter Dave Johnson was 5-5 with 3 HR and 9 RBI in the win and Mike Nino chipped in with a 4-5 3 HR and 6 RBI performance.
RoofX left fielder Chris Anninos robs a homer vs Resmondo.
Because of the aforementioned points situation Resmondo played RoofX back on Field #7 with its 315-355-385-335-315 dimensions in the quarterfinals. This was probably the game of the year so far if you want to watch it on YouTube here before reading about it. Resmondo played without Phil Matte (knee) and Jason Matusik (knee) while RoofX played without Tyler Ervine (torn tendon in foot), and Kyle Miller and Ryan Mcclanahan did not make the trip. Resmondo jumped on RoofX out of the gate, scoring 11 runs on 5 homers. In the top of the 2nd Resmondo grounded into a 5-10-3 double play on the 80 foot bases and they put up a zero. In the bottom of the 2nd Resmondo left fielder Bradley Jones threw out RoofX’s Andrew Collins attempting to stretch a single into a double and Resmondo led 11-2. In the top of the 3rd RoofX left fielder Chris Anninos made a nice timing jump to rob Resmondo of a home run as they held Resmondo to another zero, but after putting up 6 runs in the top of the 4th Resmondo led 17-10 and pitcher Travis Clark got a foul out to start the bottom of the inning. RoofX then recovered to score 7 runs on 2 out goodies including a Terry Lambright slide into home barely ahead of a tag to tie the game at 17-17. RoofX then grabbed a 22-18 lead in a 5 run bottom of the 5th and in the bottom of the 6th Resmondo held RoofX to 1 run when they doubled off Arlis Miller on a line drive catch by OGKP. So going into the top of the 7th Resmondo was down 23-20 with 7 home runs to hit. They hit 4 straight home runs to start the inning, used all 7 of their home runs in the inning, and a Bubba Mack 3 run homer gave them a 9 run inning and a 6 run lead. RoofX also had plenty of home runs left and in the bottom of the 7th a 1 out 2 run homer by Faron Fry tied the game at 29-29 but RoofX failed to finish the game and it went to extra innings. In the top of the 8th Resmondo put on a base hitting a clinic scoring 8 runs with no home runs left. But in the bottom of the 8th Chris Anninos hit a 2 run triple before Resmondo 3rd baseman Kevin Bazat, subbing in defensively, turned a key double play. Down 6 with 3 to hit and 2 OUTS, RoofX got a double from Andrew Collins, a 2 run homer from Joe Joe Bennett, a double from Kyle Center, a 2 run homer from Faron Fry, and a game tying homer from Brandon Yoder. Now, out of home runs Logan Rogers hit a triple and Arlis Miller singled through the 5-6 hole for the win. RoofX had gotten 7 straight hits with 2 outs to win the game. The display of power that Resmondo put on in the top of the 7th and then the base hitting clinic they displayed when out of home runs in the 8th, only to watch RoofX get 7 straight two out hits made this the game of the year so far. Both teams were clutch and hit all 16 of their home runs, 6 of the RoofX players were 5-6 in the game, and 55 of the 85 hits in the game were for extra bases!
Arlis Miller hits a walk off single to beat Resmondo in the bottom of the 8th.
Juno’s Brandon Jackson hits in the quarterfinals vs Proton Friday night.
At the end of the Resmondo/RoofX game I (DW) hustled down to the stadium for the last quarterfinal game between Juno and Proton. The game was 10-0 Juno going into the bottom of the 1st inning when I got there. But Proton answered with 6 in the bottom of the 1st and 13 in the bottom of the 2nd tying the game during that inning on a Ryan Honeycutt 3 run homer which went out of center field 380+ feet. Ryan Harvey hit a 2 run light tower shot and they would have scored a lot more than 13 in the inning except for a double play. In the top of the 3rd Juno got long home runs from Donnie Walsh and Brandon Jackson to go up 20-19 but it was all Proton from the bottom of the 3rd inning on as Proton outscored Juno 24-8 down the stretch and won by the 15 run rule in the bottom of the 6th 43-28. Proton was led by pitcher Dan Kirkwood 6-6 with 6 runs scored, Dan Herren hit for the cycle, Jeff Roxby had 5 extra base hits, and Ryan Honeycutt drove in 8 runs.
The directors Friday night made a decision to also play the semifinals because of an incoming thunderstorm on Saturday. So over on field #2 at 10 PM Westpoint jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the 1st two innings against I-57. But I-57 mounted a comeback in the top of the 3rd scoring 17 runs to take a 21-17 advantage. The lead seesawed back and forth going into the 7th where Westpoint led 33-32. In the top of the 7th with both teams having plenty of home runs remaining, I-57 managed just 2 runs on an Adam Harrington home run to go up 34-33. In the bottom of the 7th Westpoint got a leadoff single by Adam Kaminski, and then two batters reached on errors, before a walk to Canaan Baum, and a walk off single by Steve Hendrickson to win 35-34! For Westpoint in the win Filip Washington was 6-6 with 2 HR and 7 RBI and Kyle Fisher 6-6.
Kirkwood gets a foul out on a behind the back pitch to start the semifinal.
In the stadium the other semifinal was RoofX taking on Proton. Unlike most all of the other games on Friday, this one started out slow. Proton pitcher Dan Kirkwood got two foul outs in the top of the 1st including one on a behind the back pitch. In the top of the 2nd Proton 3rd baseman Bryan Dezern made a spectacular diving stop and threw from the knee to hold down RoofX again. RoofX had some defense of their own in the bottom of the 2nd when Jeremy Fry turned a double play. In the top of the 3rd the defense continued as Proton 2nd baseman Conner Murray made two nice plays in a 1-2-3 inning and Tyler Storey in left field robbed a home run in the top of the 4th. So going into the bottom of the 4th Proton trailed 7-6 and they came in and put up a zero? In the 5th the offense finally opened up as RoofX outscored Proton 7-6 to go up 14-12 and both teams broke out and scored 11 runs in the 6th. But the RoofX defense from Joey Miller at 3B, Jeremy Fry up the middle, and Faron Fry at 2nd base was the difference in the final two innings and RoofX escaped with a 29-24 win out homering Proton 14-11. Terry Lambright was 5-5 with 3 doubles, a triple, and a homer in the win.
Winner’s Final Recap
WestPoints Steve Hendrickson ties the game with a 2 out 2 run homer, bottom of the 7th.
The winner’s bracket final was delayed by a thunderstorm until 5:30 PM Saturday evening. In that game neither RoofX nor Westpoint put up any big innings early on and RoofX led 11-5 going into the bottom of the 5th as they hit a number of 2 out clutch multi run homers. Meanwhile Westpoint made 7 consecutive outs at one point. But in the bottom of the 5th Westpoint scored 7 runs to take a 12-11 lead and going into the 7th RoofX led 15-14. RoofX scored 2 in the top of the 7th to go up 17-14 after the first two batters made outs. In the bottom of the 7th Steve Hendrickson hit a 2 out 2 run homer to tie the game at 17-17 and Hendrickson turned a key double play in the top of the 8th to hold RoofX to zero. In the bottom of the 8th after an intentional walk to John Radich, Rich Racobaldo hit a walk off homer and Westpoint had pulled off the upset 19-17. Westpoint out homered RoofX 11-6 in the game and John Radich was on base 5-5 with 4 HR and 7 RBI in the win.
WestPoints Rich Racobaldo walks off RoofX in the bottom of the 8th!
Loser’s Bracket Recap
Proton shortstop Tyler Dickens got the out at 2nd on this diver.
The loser’s bracket started early Saturday morning and played through some thunderstorms. GOE/StrokeoMagic beat Rivalz 34-9 then upset Sports Reach 16-15 even though Reach out homered them 6-4 and neither team could score down the stretch. And in that top part of the bracket Primetime beat XR and then GOE before Proton dropped down and beat them 37-14.
Resmondo meets Juno deep in the loser’s bracket Saturday.
In the lower part of the bracket Resmondo beat SNI 37-20 and Juno beat F1’s 27-7 to meet in the stadium where Juno scored double digits in the top of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings to run rule Resmondo 36-23 out homering them 15-12. John Williams led the charge 5-5 3 HR 7 RBI, Mason Farmer was 5-5 and hit for the cycle, and Chad Mullins was 5-5 with 5 runs scored. Juno then ran into I-57 Roofing. I-57 jumped out to a 20-6 lead before Juno put up 18 runs in the top of the 4th and 17 more in the top of the 6th and Juno led 46-35 going into the bottom of the 7th. But I-57 walked Juno down in the bottom of the 7th getting a 2 out walk from Mitch Carriger, a double from Adam Harrington, a walk from Marcus Yoder, and a walk off home run from Dave Johnson to win 47-46! Mike Nino was on base 7-7 with 4 HR and 9 RBI in the win. Josh Riley had 12 RBI in the loss. In the 4th place game Proton scored 17 runs in the bottom of the 5th to go on to beat I-57 32-22 as their top of the lineup went 15-17. And then in the loser’s bracket finals RoofX took out their frustrations on Proton scoring 5 in the 1st, 17 in the 2nd, and 14 in the 3rd to 30 run mercy rule them 36-6. Jeremy Fry, Andrew Collins, and Faron Fry were perfect on base in that one as 25 of their 32 hits were for extra bases.
I-57 upsets Juno.
Championship Recap
Yes, RoofX middle man Jeremy Fry got the out at first on this play…
In the championship which started late Saturday night in cool temperatures in the stadium, RoofX scored 15 runs on 5 homers in the top of the 1st but went down in order 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd. Westpoint who was playing without Ryan Ramirez (oblique?) just never could score more than 4 runs in an inning and the RoofX defense held them down in a 33-15 6 inning RoofX run rule win. Chris Anninos and Terry Lambright were each 5-5 in the win and Anninos had 4 extra base hits. Jeremy Fry also made a spectacular diving play which was a top 10 play of the year.
The “if” game then started well after midnight. Westpoint put up 7 runs in the top of the 1st and got two Kyle Johnson defensive stabs up the middle from his pitcher position in the bottom of the 1st. But RoofX even with those two lineouts, scored 15 runs on 6 homers. Then RoofX pitcher Kyle Center turned a double play in the top of the 2nd and RoofX came in and scored 14 more runs on a Jeremy Fry bases loaded double and an Arlis Miller grand slam. In the top of the 3rd Westpoint answered with a 10 run inning where Kyle Fisher hit a grand slam and backup pitcher Roger Fields went 2-2. And then Westpoint got RoofX to put up a zero in the bottom of the 3rd. In the top of the 4th Rich Racobaldo hit a 3 run homer out of center field to cut the lead to 29-21 and Fisher hit a 3 run homer out of center field in the top of the 5th to cut the lead to 35-28. But in the bottom of the 5th needing 9 to end it, RoofX walked down Westpoint and won 45-29 on a 3 run homer by Joe Joe Bennett. RoofX became the 1st team to win two tournaments in the 2025 season and it was their second tournament win on a baseball field this year. They had zero wins on baseball fields in 2024. So I think this shows the improvement in their roster.
Long Bomber of the Week!
Austyn Dawe from RoofX is the Long Bomber of the Week not just for the long ones but the laser homers! Runner up was Andrew Collins, John Williams, and Ryan Harvey.
Memorial Major Results and Awards
MVP – RoofX middle infielder Jeremy Fry
Defensive MVP – RoofX pitcher Kyle Center
Offensive MVP – Westpoint 1st baseman John Radich
Team by Team Notes
1st Place – RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure
IN-Major Record 6-1
RoofX was without Tyler Ervine (torn tendon in foot), and Kyle Miller and Ryan Mcclanahan didn’t make the trip. They pulled out that close overtime win over Resmondo early in the tournament and played great defense but their offense and power went out in that winner’s final game against Westpoint. In the loser’s bracket they took out their anger on Proton and then “double dipped” Westpoint in the finals to win their second tournament of the year, both on baseball fields. Anninos led the team with an .829 on base percentage, Collins in HR with 13, and Anninos in RBI with 32. Joey Miller at 3rd base and Jeremy Fry made some great plays in the infield and pretty much every defensive player made good plays at some point. Kyle Center pitched the entire tournament. The team had more extra base hits than they had singles for the tournament. They play next in Columbus, Georgia in 3 weeks.
Andrew Collins led the tournament in home runs with 13.
Joey Miller at 3rd base may be a gold glover even though he is a lefty.
2nd Place – WestPoint
IN-AA Record 4-2
Westpoint played without Ryan Ramirez (chest muscle pull of some sort) and Greg Popatak and Drew Smith weren’t there. They used Canaan Baum at shortstop who played well until the last game. Flip was off his game some at the top of the order. Radich and Rock powered the offense although their stats have not been turned in yet. Westpoint is leading the nation in average Conference points per tournament for ‘AA’ teams and they will battle Ataraxis and I-57 Roofing this weekend in Chicago to try and keep that spot.
Tyler Storey made one of the best home run robs of the year vs RoofX.
3rd Place – Proton/Str8play/Rebel
CA-Major Record 3-2
Proton played without Brandon Streets Friday but he was there Saturday and got 5 at bats so he is on the mend from his back injury. They were also missing Joey Capparelli (knee). Kirkwood did most of the pitching and Kirkwood, Dezern, Dickens, Harvey, Herren, Roxby, Acevedo, and Streets were all over .700 on base so the offense was cooking except for that loser’s final against RoofX where they scored just 6 runs. Harvey led the team in HR with 12 and Acevedo led in RBI with 23. Proton leads the Conference in points by 24 over RoofX but then they have played one more tournament than RoofX has.
Dan Kirkwood is at .804 for the year for Proton as the pitcher.
4th Place – I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA
IL-AA Record 2-2
I-57 beat Sports Reach and just barely lost to Westpoint in the winner’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket they scored 12 in the bottom of the 7th to upset Juno. Another solid tournament for I-57 who will also play in Chicago this weekend. Laser Dave Johnson and Mike Nino were over .800 on base. Nino had the power stroke going leading the team with 11 HR. Johnson led in RBI with 25. Orlando Olivera should be back from his broken hand soon.
