Friday Night Recap

Proton’s toughest game of their tournament may have been their first game against SNI.

Dan Kirkwood was called for blocking the plate on this play.

The 2025 Texas Legends Major was played at the Texas Star Parks formerly known as Softball World in almost perfect weather with very little wind.  The 30 teams (17 Conference) hailed from 15 different states and the double elimination tournament started at 4 PM central time on Friday, April 25th.  Ataraxis/Sonny’s/JBL/Newbreed/Koval/BAF (MD-AA) and Westpoint (IN-AA) were the top two teams in Conference points so they received bye’s from the first round.  Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren/BAF (VA-AA) knocked off Jimmy’s Heros which was kind of a Texas ‘A’ pickup team with Corey Large and a couple other names you may recognize from the past.  Chick-fil-a scored 20 runs in the top of the 2nd and cruised to a 34-15 victory in 5 innings.  Leadoff hitter Tre Porter was 4-5 with 3 HR in the win.  Most of the Conference teams playing on the 300-305-310-305-300 foot fields used all of their home runs in most games.  There were some games with lower scores on the baseball field across the street (Legends field) that went out to 350 feet.  All 4 fields used the Dudley Pro-M ball which was way too much ball for the softball fields.  I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA (IL-AA) run ruled BC Apparel 36-15 scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the 1st and 17 in the bottom of the 2nd to win in 4 innings.  “Laser” Dave Johnson and Nic Perkins were on base every at bat and Johnson drove in 11 RBI on 4 home runs.  DIRTY VEGAS/BDC/ARK CONCEPTS (TX-A) leading Top Shelf/Icon/BC Apparel (OK-B) 24-21 going into the top of the 7th used their last two home runs (12) to go up 28-21 and they held off Top Shelf by a run getting 3 of the last 4 batters to make outs.  Dirty’s Zach Speaker and Shawn Huseman were each 5-5 with Speaker hitting for the cycle.  Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) beat Rooftop Solutions/Prime Apparel (TX-B) from Houston 19-15 over on the baseball field after being tied going into the 7th.  Primetime out homered Rooftop 4-0 as Edmund Cheatham went 4-4 with 4 runs scored.  Bay Area Legends (CA-TBD) beat Texas Kings/PURE/Beshea Tile/T1xVS (TX-B) 17-14 on the baseball field.  SNI/LOB/DEMARINI (FL-A) won over FAS/JTS/GTSPORTS (TX-B) 22-4 in 4 innings on the baseball field.  Proton/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) scored 10 in the top of the 1st and 15 in the top of the 2nd and went on to beat Gamblers/Branded South/SayWhen (LA-C) 39-13 as Dank Kirkwood, Dan Herren, Anthony Acevedo, newly acquired Ryan Honeycutt, and Chad Erickson were all 5-5.  Legendz/Beloli/MSGA Sports (OK-A) trounced Pure Pressure (TX-B) 44-8 scoring 22 runs in the top of the 5th.  John Schlabach and David Schwartz were each 6-6 with Schlabach and Casey Scoggins each hitting for the cycle.  RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major), last year’s Texas Legends winner, beat JPS/No Pressure Sports (AR-C) 38-14 scoring 12 in the top of the 3rd and 17 in the top of the 4th.  Jeremy Fry, Austyn Dawe, Andrew Collins, and Logan Rogers were perfect on base in the win and Dawe drove in 8 runs on 3 HR.  Over on the baseball field MoneyBall/GameOver/PrimeApparel, a very good Texas ‘B’ team, became the only non-conference team to win a first round game when they beat the F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar (TX-B) a conference team 13-10 without hitting a single home run.  Cheap Suits /REPUBLIC REALTY /ES (CA-A) scored 13 runs in the top of the 4th and beat Elevate&Celebrate/JMI (OK-C) 34-24 as Demario Boyd and Brandon Traylor were each 5-6.  Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) made short work of SOLDADOS/VSSI (TX-B) winning 30-4 in 3.5 innings scoring 13 in the bottom of the 1st and 12 in the bottom of the 3rd.  Josh Fyffe, Jason Gilfillan, Anthony Ottrando, Jordan Robinson, and Brandon Jonas were perfect on base in the game.  Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S (FL-Major) got some batting practice in against Impact reloaded (NM-B) scoring 17 in the top of the 1st, 16 in the 2nd, and 13 in the 3rd to win 46-2.  Kyle Pearson, Bradley Jones, Travis Clark, Greg Connell, and Heath Barnes were all either 5-5 or 6-6 and Phil Matte hit 4 HR and drove in 10 RBI in the win.  And in the only Conference vs Conference team game in the 1st round, Cheyenne Swenson OF/VIVID/Payeload (AZ-A) down 29-22 to the new I-57 Roofing / I-55 Logistics (MO-B), scored 10 runs in the top of the 7th and held I-57 scoreless to pull out a 32-29 win.

6 of the 8 “Round of 16” games were played late Friday night and the other two were played on Saturday morning.  Westpoint (IN-AA) the #2 seed annihilated fellow ‘AA’ opponent Chick-fil-a 34-3 in 2.5 innings out homering them 14-1 and scoring 19 runs after a leadoff double play in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Filip Washington, John Radich, Rich Racobaldo, Ryan Ramirez, Joey Kampfer, Kyle Fisher, and Greg Popatak were all 4-4.  Over on the Legends baseball field Primetime held off Bay Area Legends 28-23 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th as Frankie Fisk and Angel Ortega went 5-5, Ortega hit for the cycle, and both teams hit 11 HR.  In the best game of the night which you can watch here, SNI/LOG/DeMarini scored 20 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning against the Proton Major team.  But Proton sort of let the game come to them, used their home runs more strategically, and scored double digits in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings to pull out a 46-43 comeback win with SNI putting up a zero in the bottom of the 7th.  Proton pitcher and leadoff hitter Dan Kirkwood was 7-7, Anthony Acevedo drove in 9 runs, and Jeff Roxby was 7-7 with 6 runs scored in an entertaining game which had some wild plays, good defense, and some bloopers.  RoofX scored 15 in the top of the 1st, 12 in the 2nd, and 12 in the 4th to beat Legendz 47-21.  Tyler Ervine, Chris Anninos, and Faron Fry were perfect on base and Ervine drove in 8 runs in the win.  Cheap Suits scored 10 in the top of the 1st, 21 in a 30 minute long 2nd, and Moneyball started out with 15 runs on 10 homers (most of them solo) as Cheap Suits went on to win in 6 innings 35-19.  Dante Broome was 5-5 and rookie of the year candidate Adrian Ramos drove in 9 runs in the win.  Ataraxis beat Cheyenne Swenson 35-17 as Brian Garner went 5-5.

Saturday Recap

The “Round of 16” game between Sports Reach and Resmondo was a good one.

On Saturday morning at 11 AM the last two “Round of 16” games were played.  The I-57 Roofing ‘AA’ team out homered Dirty Vegas 14-6 and scored 14 runs in the top of the 5th to win 40-23.  Player/sponsors/brothers Marcus and David Yoder were each 5-5 in the win and Jordan Spaulding drove in 9 runs.  And Sports Reach and Resmondo each scored in every inning but Resmondo started hitting 3 run homers in the bottom of the 3rd to stay in the game.  Sports Reach was up 31-23 hitting a grand slam on their last homer (14) going into the bottom of the 6th where a refocused Resmondo scored 12 runs to win 35-34 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th.  Kyle Pearson, the league’s leading hitter for the past 3+ years, was 6-6 in the win.

The quarterfinals were played at 12:30 and 2 pm in near perfect softball weather.  Resmondo scored 12 in the bottom of the 1st and 16 in the bottom of the 3rd and beat Ataraxis, who’s offense was stagnant, 33-13.  Mooch pitching for Ataraxis walked too many hitters and allowed too many middle hits.  Resmondo took advantage especially in the 3rd inning getting grand slam home runs from Travis Clark and Greg Connell.  Bradley Jones was 5-5, Phil Matte 4-4 with 8 RBI, and Connell was 3-4 with 9 RBI in the win.  On the field next to the Resmondo game I-57 Roofing scored 14 runs in the top of the 1st and grinded out a 29-25 victory over ‘AA’ rival Westpoint.  Dave Johnson was 5-5 in the leadoff spot with 4 RBI and Christian Glisson and Cody Roton each hit 3 home runs for I-57.  At the 2 PM game on the show field RoofX scored 12 in the bottom of the 1st and leading Cheap Suits 22-18 going into the bottom of the 5th left them on the field with a 12 run inning, winning 34-18.  Arlis Miller, Jeremy Fry, Austyn Dawe, Faron Fry, and Logan Rogers were all on base 4-4 or 4-5, almost everyone on the team hit at least 1 home run, and Jeremy and Joe Joe Bennett each drove in 6 runs.  And Proton over on Hall of Fame field with the wind blowing in out homered Primetime 5-4 and beat them 28-10 in 6 innings to advance to the “Final 4”.  Dan Kirkwood again was 5-5 bringing his on base streak to 17-17 for the tournament, and Bryan Dezern drove in 6 runs.

Resmondo’s Phil Matte drove in 8 runs against Ataraxis in the quarterfinals.

Final 4 Recap

Resmondo vs RoofX in the semifinals was a crowd favorite matchup.

The semifinals and winner’s finals were played out back to back to back on the show field Saturday evening which was already 2 hours behind schedule.  I-57 Roofing got the party started scoring 13 runs on 6 homers in the top of the 1st against Proton.  But Proton, unfazed, answered with 26 runs on 9 home runs in the bottom of the 1st.  They hit multiple 2 out 3 run homers, scoring 15 runs after recording the 2nd out.  In the top of the 2nd I-57 scored 7 runs on 2 homers and in the bottom half of the 2nd left fielder Adam Harrington and pitcher Mitch Carriger made some nice plays to keep them in the game.  But the I-57 offense went sour putting up zero’s in the 3rd and 4th and the Proton offense left I-57 on the field 37-22 in the bottom of the 5th.  Kirkwood, Dan Herren, Ryan Honeycutt, Ryan Harvey, and Tyler Storey all reached base 5-5 or 5-6 and Storey drove in 6 runs.  In the other semifinal it was a marquee matchup between RoofX and Resmondo the two teams that most fans think are the top two teams in the country.  Although Resmondo knocked RoofX out of the 2024 Major World Series in the bottom of the 7th, RoofX had won 10 straight regular season games against Resmondo going into this game.  RoofX got off to a slow start scoring just 1 run in the top of the 1st and Resmondo went up 8-1 in the bottom half of the inning.  RoofX then kind of grabbed control of the game scoring 9 in the top of the 2nd, 13 in the 4th, and 10 in the 5th to go up 36-17.  Resmondo needing 5 runs to avoid the 15 run mercy rule in the bottom of the 5th, scored 17 on 6 home runs even though they grounded into a double play in the middle of the inning.  From there both teams offenses went cold and the defenses made some plays and Resmondo ended up entering the bottom of the 7th down 44-36 with home runs left, they could only manage 4 runs and RoofX escaped with a 44-42 win, out homering Resmondo 16-15.  Andrew Collins led the offense 6-6 with 6 RBI and every player on the RoofX team reached base safely at least 4 times.  For Resmondo Phil Matte was 6-6 with 4 HR and 11 RBI, and OG Kyle Pearson was 6-6 with 4 HR and 8 RBI.

Winner’s Final Recap

Chris Annino tees off for RoofX against Proton in the winner’s final after midnight Saturday.

The winner’s final between Proton and RoofX started after midnight Saturday in cool crisp conditions but with no real wind to speak of.  Both teams put up a 4 spot in the 1st inning.  Then the Proton offense which put up multiple double digit offensive innings in every game they played Friday and Saturday, scored 12 in the top of the 2nd, 11 in the 3rd, and 16 in the 4th.  They ended up winning by the run rule over RoofX 44-17 and out homering them 14-7.  Pitcher Dan Kirkwood was 6-6 upping his on base for the tournament to 28-29.  Anthony Acevedo was 5-5 with 7 RBI.  And Ryan Honeycutt was 5-5 with 6 RBI for Proton who was 46-58 on base (.793) in the game!

Loser’s Bracket Recap

Sports Reach and Westpoint battle in the loser’s bracket Saturday.

The loser’s bracket played out all day on Saturday. In the top half of the loser’s bracket Sports Reach knocked off Elevate&Celebrate and Pure Pressure before Westpoint dropped down and sent them home 40-22. And then Resmondo dropped into the loser’s bracket and scored 5 in the top of the 7th and held off Westpoint in the bottom half to win 47-45 and advance to Sunday. In the lower half of the loser’s bracket Dirty Vegas playing in their home state beat Rooftop, Chick-fil-a, and Ataraxis before Cheap Suits sent them home 28-23. And then I-57 Roofing’s ‘AA’ team dropped down into the loser’s bracket and beat Cheap Suits 31-15 late Saturday night to advance to Sunday. So Westpoint and Cheap Suits finished tied for 5th.

Sunday Recap

Tyler Marshburn hits for Resmondo vs I-57 Roofing at 8 am Sunday morning in the 4th place game.

On Sunday morning at 8 am in beautiful weather a banged up Resmondo team with Jeremy Yates out with a torn calf, Jason Matusik (meniscus), Bubba Mack (rib), and other players like Phil Matte playing hurt, ended up run ruling I-57 Roofing who was missing Zane Migues, Jacob Hoskins, and Orlando Olivera (broken hand), 40-23 in 5 innings.  Resmondo scored 11 in the 1st, 12 in the 4th, and 12 in the 5th to leave I-57 on the field.  Resmondo’s 2 out runs were killers in that game.  Kyle Pearson and Cory Briggs were each 5-5.

RoofX middle infielder Jeremy Fry made an incredible diving stop and completed the out at 2nd vs Resmondo.

In the loser’s final at 10 am Resmondo played their regular season nemesis RoofX again.  Early on both teams were trying to conserve home runs and it was 11-8 Resmondo after two innings.  Then both teams put up zero’s in the 3rd.  In the top of the 4th RoofX exploded for 19 runs on 8 homers to grab a 27-11 lead.  RoofX held the lead until the bottom of the 5th when Resmondo scored 13 runs on 3 – 3 run homers by Bradley Jones, OG Kyle Pearson, and Kevin Bazat to tie the game at 31-31.  From there the pitching of Travis Clark took over and RoofX who ended up leaving 3 home runs on the table and scored just one run in the top of the 6th and went down in order in the top of the 7th.  Resmondo grabbed the lead when Phil Matte hit a pinch hit double and Bubba Mack a pinch hit homer in the bottom of the 6th with two outs to put them up 34-32, and they didn’t have to use the hammer or their final 3 HR in the bottom of the 7th.

In the championship game at high noon, Resmondo put up a respectable 6 runs in the top of the 1st.  But Proton answered with 20 runs on 9 home runs in the bottom half of the inning and a 2 out grand slam by Jeff Roxby made it 23-9.  It did feel like Resmondo could have a chance to come back if they used their home runs correctly but it wasn’t meant to be, as the Protons defense behind the pitching of Dan Kirkwood held the mighty Resmondo offense in check the rest of the way and Proton left Resmondo on the field, finally in the bottom of the 5th after a couple of attempts, 35-18.  The Proton offense just did not have any holes and everyone was clicking.  And some great diving stops by middle infielder Dan Herren, 2nd baseman Conner Murray, and some middle shot stabs by Dan Kirkwood helped keep Resmond in check.  The entire Proton team was basically 4-5 in the championship. MVP Dan Kirkwood wound up 32-34 for the tournament!

The tournament had spectacular weather and the usual great Friday and Saturday night atmosphere. The infield turf had a tough 2nd bounce but the infield play overall was excellent fielding laser after laser but the throws to first base were not great throughout the tournament.  The umpires did a nice job considering the ridiculous length of the games and the high scores caused by the Dudley Pro-M ball which remember was created for 325 foot fields in the Florida heat and the Smoky and not meant for 300 foot fields.

Proton 2nd baseman Conner Murray makes a spectacular play in the championship.

Long Bomber of the Week!

Proton’s Ryan Harvey was hitting some long homers and some laser homers and is the Long Bomber of the Week!

 Results and Awards

MVP – Proton Pitcher Dan Kirkwood

Defensive MVP – Proton Middle Infielder Dan Herren

Offensive MVP – Resmondo’s Kyle Pearson

Team by Team Notes

1st Place – Proton/Str8play/Rebel

CA-Major  Record  6-0

Proton was able to bat around the order almost at will the entire tournament.  And that let Kirkwood pitch without walking opponents and the defense to play behind him.  Andrew Vitcak returned to the Conference after a few years away to back up Kirkwood at pitcher.  They also picked up former RoofX lefty Ryan Honeycutt.  Proton played without Brandon Streets (back) and Joey Capparelli was reduced to pinch hitting.  Harvey was .844 with 14 HR and 34 RBI.  Honeycutt .844 11 HR 32 RBI.  And Dan Kirkwood at leadoff .941 with 26 runs scored.

2nd Place – Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S

FL-Major  Record  6-2

Resmondo was missing Jason Matusik (meniscus), Jeremy Yates (torn calf), and Bubba Mack (rib) was reduced to pinch hitting.  During the tournament Phil Matte and Kyle Pearson appeared to get banged up as well.  So we haven’t seen the real full Resmondo offense yet but yet they still lead the league in Runs Per 7 Innings at 39.2.  Travis Clark continues to get some timely popouts and foulouts at pitcher.  They also gutted through the loser’s bracket after losing in the semifinals playing until 3 am Sunday morning and then coming back at 8 am and beating I-57 and RoofX, two teams that have had their number recently.  Travis Clark was .825.  KP .878.  And Phil Matte led the team with 13 HR and 35 RBI.

3rd Place – RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure

IN-Major  Record  4-2

By all accounts RoofX appears to have a team this year built better for the baseball fields than they were last year and that was apparent with their win in HOF 1 and their 2nd place in HOF 2.  But the question was, would they still be dominant on 300 foot fields?  In 2024 they 27-1 on 300 foot fields.  Now to start 2025 they are 4-2.  RoofX played without center fielder Brandon Yoder who did not make the trip.  Patrick Center was backed up at pitcher by Austyn Dawe and Ryan Mcclanahan.  Chris Anninos and Faron Fry led the team with over .800 on base percentages.  Anninos had 13 HR and 28 RBI as well.  RoofX is in position however to lead the Conference points standings once everyone has their minimum of 7 tournaments played.

4th Place – I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA

IL-AA  Record  4-2

I-57 was highest finishing ‘AA’ team just as they were last year at the Texas Legends and they did it with a “next man up mentality” missing Zane Migues, Jacob Hoskins, and Orlando Olivera (broken hand).  Outfielder David Yoder was .808, Marcus Yoder .773, and Nic Perkins .741.  Adam Harrington led the team in HR with 11 and Laser Dave Johnson with 26 RBI.  I-57 will be the favorite this weekend in Phoenix.  I-57 hit 19 triples in this tournament!

Faces in the Crowd / More Pictures

USSSA directors Juan Martinez and Jim Pilla with professional wrestler Braun Strowman (Adam Scherr).

Scherr’s dad was one of the greatest softball players of all time.  Rick Scherr.

Cole Campbell from Hitting with the Nation on YouTube takes a picture with a fan.

Cole also helped me do some additional condensed games.

I found out Scott Patterson pitcher for Dirty Vegas who pulled off some upsets this past weekend, actually made it to the show briefly with the Yankees!

Former Big Time Softball Magazine owner Stafford Connor, now enjoying retirement.

Championship umpires – Phillip Taylor from Arkansas and Greg Jones from Texas.

The Dudley Pro-M ball was way too much for the 300 foot fields making for some crazy long games.

Check out the weekly Computer Rankings here.

Another great call by the conference umpires.  He was correctly called safe.

One of my microphone stands never showed up so I had to engineer this.  🙂
