Saturday Morning Recap
RoofTop puts away F1’s with a sliding catch to end the game.
The Conference returned to Houston, Texas for the 1st time in a number of years and played a one day, ten team double elimination tournament at the Ballparks at League City – formerly known as the Big League Dreams. It was warm and extremely humid, they used the Dudley Pro-M ball, and they used the Crosley (289-287-301-288-289) and Yankee (281-285-289-285-273) replica fields. The 8 teams comprised of 3 Conference teams, 7 teams from Texas, and the favorite Juno Athletics/LSR a Major team from New Jersey who was there hunting Conference points. The tournament began at 8 am with Pure Pressure (TX-B) narrowly beating MoneyBall/GameOver/PrimeApparel (TX-B) 18-17 when MoneyBall made two crucial base running errors in the 6th inning. Over on Crosley field it was Rooftop Solutions/Prime Apparel (TX-B) with a minor upset of F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar (TX-B) 26-18 when F1’s scored 14 in the top of the 3rd to take a 16-7 lead and basically scored nothing the rest of the game as RoofTop scored in every inning except the 1st. At 9:30 AM Juno Athletics (NJ-Major) run ruled Houston 59ers/Prime Apparel (TX-C) 39-6 as Buddy Wolf, Brandon Jackson, and Mason Farmer all went 5-5. And DIRTY VEGAS/BDC/ARK CONCEPTS (TX-A) playing without Ben Dunn (Team USA), pitcher Sport Williams, and power hitter Zach Goleniak still rolled easily through Vivid Killbombers (TX-B) 28-2 in 4 innings.
Zach Speaker was a double machine for DV vs Vivid.
Final 4 Recap
Dakota Lowery hits a grand slam to pull Pure Pressure back into the semifinal game.
The semifinals were played at noon. On Yankee field Juno Athletics playing without Josh Riley (injured at the Smoky), John Williams (cancelled flight), Michal Rainer (family stuff), backup pitcher Jacob Neal, and Chad Mullins, actually had sponsor/manager Mark Carucci playing 2nd base took on Pure Pressure. Pure Pressure scored 1 on a leadoff homer in the top of the 1st and Juno came in and put up 18 runs as leadoff hitter Mitch Lendenski, returning from a short lived retirement, hit 3 times in the inning. Pure Pressure actually got a good glove on 4 of the balls in the inning but they just didn’t stick and Carucci had an RBI double in the inning for Juno. In the top of the 4th Pure Pressure showed some life scoring 8 runs with the help of a Dakota Lowery grand slam to pull to within 29-18 but Juno went on to win by the run rule 37-22 in 5 innings. Brandon Jackson was again 5-5 and drove in 9 runs. And Dirty Vegas run ruled RoofTop 21-6 over on Crosley field.
Winner’s Final Recap
Bishop Harris avoids getting hit by the line drive in the winner’s final.
The winner’s bracket final was then played on Yankee field in the early afternoon. Dirty Vegas led Juno 8-7 after an inning and it would have been worse except Mason Farmer got a strike out looking. In the bottom of the 2nd Carucci hit a 2 run triple that led to a 14 run inning for Juno and a 21-8 lead with home runs at 9 to 5 (allowed 14). In the top of the 3rd Dirty Vegas answered with 16 runs to take a lead but Juno got a bases loaded double by Bishop Harris to take the lead back 25-24 and then a line drive grand slam by Jackson and Juno eventually left Dirty Vegas on the field 39-24 in the bottom of the 5th.
Carucci 2 run triple in an 18 run inning.
Loser’s Bracket Recap
Isaac Aleman and F1’s takes a crack at Dirty Vegas in the loser’s final.
The loser’s bracket played out from 11 AM on as F1’s knocked off Vivid 20-5, Pure Pressure 17-3, and Moneyball 21-18 to make it to the loser’s bracket finals against Dirty Vegas. That game and the championship were moved from Yankee to Crosley due to the fact it was easier to retrieve home run balls and the field had an actual home plate and not a painted on plate like Yankee field had. Dirty Vegas 2nd baseman Avain Rachal hit a bases loaded 3 run double and they scored 7 on 2 to start the game. In the bottom of the 1st F1’s scored 4 on 3 but got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double for one of the outs. In the top of the 2nd DV put up a zero on a bunch of line drive outs. The wind was blowing in at 12 mph and it definitely cut down on the home runs and DV base hit their way to a 13-7 lead going into the bottom of the 4th. F1’s pulled to within 14-12 on a 2 out 3 run homer by Rivas in the bottom of the 4th, got DV to go 1-2-3 in the top of the 5th, but answered with a zero of their own in the bottom of the 5th, and scored 3 on 2 in the bottom of the 6th to pull to within 21-15. In the top of the 7th Dirty Vegas didn’t score and left 6 home runs on the table but held off F1’s 21-15 when F1’s failed to score in the bottom of the 7th.
RoofTop hitting against MoneyBall in the 4th place game.
Championship Recap
Mason Farmer from Texas drove in 8 runs in the championship game.
The championship was played around 8 PM Saturday night with the wind still blowing in. Dirty Vegas came out hot scoring 10 on 3 in the top of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 1st a Matt Valencia grand slam for Juno made it 8-10. In the top of the 2nd Dirty Vegas had the bases loaded with no outs and only managed 1 run when they grounded into a double play. In the bottom of the 2nd Dirty Vegas turned an early double play of their own but then Juno scored 8 runs with 2 outs to take a 16-11 lead. Juno got another double play to end the top of the 4th and then scored 11 runs to go up 30-15 and 12-5 on home runs. Dirty Vegas extended the game to avoid the run rule twice but Juno held on to win 38-29. Leadoff hitter Lendenski was 6-7, MVP Jackson was 6-6, Valencia had 9 RBI, and pitcher Mason Farmer 8 RBI as I believed he pitched every inning of the tournament and Mason is from Texas. It was Juno’s 2nd tournament win of the year (1st was HOF).
The tournament was well run by Juan Martinez and UIC Dave Maury and a good group of Conference umpires. The teams and games were solid for the most part and the park is trying to get the Conference to move to a date earlier in the year next year so they can get more teams and don’t have to fight with the Border Battle, Laney, and Cincinnati Metro for players.
Rumor Mill: Says that Andy Purcell is coming back to the Conference as manager/pitcher of RoofX…

Long Bomber of the Week!
Brandon Jackson was Long Bomber of the Week as well as MVP. Don Walsh and Joe Boland get honorable mention.

Defensive MVP – Juno middle infielder Joe Boland
Offensive MVP – Dirty Vegas middle infielder Daniel Larson
Team by Team Notes
1st Place – Juno Athletics/LSR
NJ-Major Record 4-0
Juno won with a depleted roster and came to Houston and got the points they needed to position themselves to get into the top 4 after the Evansville dual which starts August 7th.
Erik Nevoso who had flight delay problems got there for the last couple games.
Farmer pitching, Harris SS, Boland MI, Jackson LF
2nd Place – Dirty Vegas/BDC/Ark Concepts
TX-A Record 3-2
Dirty Vegas finished 2nd as expected. They played Juno fairly well but needed to pressure them more by taking a late lead they were never able to get.
The versatile Chris Musick played SS and CF.
Kanaby drills his teammate Huseman who was sort of injured after that…
3rd Place – F1’s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar
TX-B Record 3-2
F1’s recovered after losing that first game and will need to be more consistent to push for a ‘B’ World title vs the likes of Fisher’s and CutThroatSports.
Cody Stack pitching for F1’s, Garibay at 2B, and Lovato in RF.
4th Place – MoneyBall/GameOver/PrimeApparel
TX-B Record 3-2
I was doing a condensed game on the field next to MoneyBall pretty much every time they played so I didn’t get to see much of them. But they always put together a solid team and made a nice loser’s bracket run after those base running mistakes in their opener.
More Teams
Pure Pressure is a solid ‘B’ team.
Killbomber put together a ‘B’ team for his home city tournament.
Faces in the Crowd / More Pictures
That play at 1st in the championship was basically a tie, which goes to umpires judgement.
The Pro-M was a good batch but wind blowing in and humidity kept the scores reasonably low for the small fields.
The park has some interesting looking new lights.
The painted plate is tough on the umpires and hitters.
