Friday Recap

Sports Reach’s Scott Hartling takes aim at a house on the short porch field #1.

The 57th annual Smoky Mountain Classic was played in Marysville, Tennessee this past weekend.  There were 34 teams from 18 different states and 20 of the top teams from Conference USSSA led the field.  It was hot and humid the entire weekend with temperatures in the mid and high 80’s but the rain held off for the most part.  The action began at 10 am with 4 local teams playing 2 “play in” games at the famous Sandy Springs Park where they used the Dudley Hardcore ball with the traditional UNLIMITED home runs and 80 foot bases.  In the “Round of 32” which began at 11:15 am the Conference teams began play.  The #3 seed Proton/Str8play/Rebel/Dalsanders (CA-Major) used Bases Loaded (TN-D) for batting practice as they scored 32 runs on 8 home runs to win 32-2 in 3 innings on the Sandy Springs #3 show field with its 315-335-350-335-315 dimensions.  Sandy #3 is an old high school baseball field.  Jeff Roxby, Ryan Harvey, Tyler Storey, Conner Murray, and Jordan Jarrell were all 4-4.  At 12:45 on the show field ATARAXIS/SONNYS/JBLNEWBREEDKOVALBAF (MD-AA) the #4 seed beat Rookies (KY-D) 39-0.  At 12:45 on Sandy Springs field #4 with its 310-310-275 dimensions and again using the Dudley Hardcore ball, DIRTY VEGAS/BDC/ARK CONCEPTS (TX-A) scored 11 in the 1st and 14 in the 3rd and ended up beating Anarchy/Rebel/TAFN/Midstate/PT (MI-B) 41-18 in 5 innings by the run rule.  Leadoff hitter Donald Hollingsworth was 6-6, Steven Paramore 5-5, and Chris Musick 5-5 in the win as Dirty Vegas hit 22 home runs.  At 2:15 PM on the show field it was #1 seed RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major) beating D&L/Dairy Daddies (TN-E) 39-5 in 2 at bats after scoring 36 runs in the bottom of the 1st.  RoofX hit 20 home runs in 6 outs.  Arlis Miller at leadoff was 5-5 with 7 RBI and Andrew Collins 4-4 with 4 HR.  At 1:30 PM on Sandy #4 the #7 seeded Juno Athletics/LSR (NJ-Major) beat MTSP (NC-C) 47-19.  At 2 PM they also began play at the Everett Park a few miles away from Sandy Springs.  There, the Chick-fil-A / BAF Sports (VA-B) team out homered Fishers/StoltzfusWelding/All Hustle (PA-B) 15-4 and beat them 37-16 in 4 innings after scoring 17 in the 1st and 14 in the 3rd on the “short porch” Everett field #1 with its 295 home run fence and the Dudley Pro-M ball.  Chris “Pudge” Isennock hit 4 home runs in the win.  At 2 PM over on Everett field #2 where they used the Pro-M ball on a 310-300-295 foot field, Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) scored 7 in the bottom of the 6th to break open a tie game with non-Conference team Kut4Sports/Anchor Roofing (AL-B) and Reach didn’t have to hit in the bottom of the 7th winning 29-26.  Scott Hartling, Josh Fyffe, Jason Magnum, and Jordan Robinson were all 4-5 with 3 HR.  It was also the first game with Jason Branch joining Sports Reach for the rest of the season.  Welcome back Jason!  At 3:30 PM back at the main field at Sandy Springs, #2 seeded Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S (FL-Major) got a warmup game against LNL (TN-D), beating them 35-5 in 3 innings while hitting 15 HR.  Steele Lewis and Brad Reckart were each 4-4, while Bradley Jones went 5-5 in the win.  Over on Sandy #4 Legendz/Beloli/MSGA Sports (OK-A) beat Classic/Mulkey Pest Control (LA-B) 32-14 in 6 innings.  Kyle Slicker was 4-5 with 4 HR and 6 RBI in that one.  Back at Everett Park at 3 PM I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA (IL-AA) beat MP/LappBros/SLS (TN-C) 44-5 on the small field as they hit 25 home runs in 4 innings and scored 27 runs in the top of the 4th.  And Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren/BAF (VA-AA) run ruled Texas Kings/PURE/Beshea Tile/T1xVS (TX-C) 27-7 in 4 innings leaving them on the field in a 15 run bottom of the 4th.  Matt Brady and Justin Ogletree were each 4-4.  At 4:30 PM on Sandy #4 Cheap Suits /REPUBLIC REALTY /ESP (CA-A) beat Riverside Baptist/King’s Men (TN-B) 32-9 as Carlos Abrigo and Charlie Cano each went 5-5 and leadoff hitter Daniel Cayton hit 4 of their 11 home runs in 5 innings.  At 5 PM back at Everett #1 Rivalz/ASC/Wicked Mitts (TN-B) a non-conference team upset Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) in a shootout 51-48 on a walk off 3 run homer by Marcus Weaver in the bottom of the 7th.  For Rivalz in the game Joseph Haley was 7-7 and Haley, James Matthew, Tyler Clayborne, Michael Spain, and Weaver all hit 4 or 5 home runs each.  On the losing side for Primetime Lonzo “Choo” Fields was 6-7 with 6 HR and 11 RBI.  At 5 PM on Everett #2 BeHappy/Proton/Standard (AZ-A) run ruled GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andrews (AL-B) 38-16.  And in the final game of the “Round of 32” at 8 PM Friday night, WestPoint (IN-AA) the #5 seed run ruled ECS/J&L Cleaners (TN-D) 31-6 in 4 innings on Sandy Springs #4, as Ryan Ramirez and Tyler Cowles each went 4-4.

Rivalz Marcus Weaver hits a walk off to beat Primetime.

The “Round of 16” was also played on Friday night and the 8 winner’s moved on to the prestigious “Final 8” on the show field Saturday!  First on the show field Dirty Vegas scored 11 in the top of the 5th but flew into a triple play to end the inning up 17-16 on Proton.  Proton answered with 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th and didn’t have to bat in the bottom of the 7th in a 29-27 victory.  Jeff Roxby was 5-5 and Ryan Harvey 5-5 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in the win.  Ataraxis out homered Legendz 20-11 on the show field to win in 5 innings 38-23.  Brock Frentzel at lead off was 5-6 with 3 HR, Josh Cardwell 6-6 with 4 HR, and Marc Wik 5-5 with 3 HR in the win.  Over at Everett Park on the short porch field Juno scored 30 runs in the top of the 2nd and beat Sports Reach 44-11 in 3 innings, out homering them 26-6.  Josh Riley was 6-6, most of the team was on base 5 or 6 out of 6 and Mason Farmer hit 4 home runs and drove in 10 RBI.  Over on Everett #2 it was two ‘AA’ teams squaring off with I-57 Roofing and Chick-fil-a.  I-57 scored early and often jumping out to a 21-3 lead.  Then as the sun started to set in the batters eyes, Chick-fil-a was unable to mount a comeback and I-57 won 34-15 in 6 innings out homering Chick-fil-a 18-10.  At 8 PM on the show field Resmondo made short work of the Chick-fil-a ‘B’ team, scoring 12 in the bottom of the 1st, 13 in the 2nd, and leaving them on the field with a 10 run 3rd to win 35-4.  Resmondo hit 22 HR in the 3 innings as KP23, Jeremy Yates, Phil Matte, Steele Lewis, and Tyler Marshburn all went 4-4.  Over on Everett #2 Rivalz the non-conference ‘B’ team that walked off Primetime in their opener, were at it again.  Down 17-10 going into the bottom of the 7th, they scored 5 with just one out and then back to back doubles set up a walk off homer by catcher Cory Williams!  So they hit two walk off homers to beat Conference ‘A’ teams in one night!  Williams was 4-4 in the game.  Back at the show field RoofX scored 20 in the bottom of the 1st and left SNI on the field 37-8 with a 10 run 3rd.  Jeremy Fry, Austyn Dawe, Andrew Collins, Joe Bennett, Patrick Center, and Brandon Yoder were all perfect on base in the game.  Yoder hit for the cycle and Collins hit 4 HR and drove in 6 runs.  And in the nightcap on field #4 WestPoint scored 28 in the bottom of the 1st and was on pace to score 116 runs when they left BeHappy on the field 53-33 while hitting 21 home runs.  Rich Racobaldo, Ryan Ramirez, Adam Kaminski, and Joey Kampfer were all 6-6. Racobaldo hit 4 HR and drove in 8 runs.

Rivalz Cory Williams hits a walk off homer to beat Cheap Suits!

Chick-fil-a takes on I-57 Roofing in the sun game Friday.

Saturday Recap

Quarterfinal #1 – Proton vs Rivalz

Quarterfinal #2 – Resmondo takes on Juno Athletics.

On Saturday on the show field in the heat and humidity the Dudley Hardcore was unaffected by the weather and was FLYING!  Proton scored 12 in the bottom of the 1st and 27 in the bottom of the 2nd to beat upset minded Rivalz 39-9 in 2.5 innings.  Dan Herren, Brandon Streets, Ryan Harvey, Tyler Dickens, Tyler Storey, Anthony Acevedo, and Dan Kirkwood were all perfect on base in the game.  In the biggest early showdown of the tournament Resmondo played Juno, two Major teams.  Resmondo jumped out to a 13-4 lead after 1 inning as Phil Matte hit a grand slam and Resmondo hit 6 straight home runs at one point.  Then shortstop Tyler Marshburn made two plays that shut down the Juno offense even though Juno’s Donnie Walsh hit one of the longest home runs of the tournament to right center into the 2nd tennis court.  In the top of the 2nd Juno turned a double play but in the bottom of the 2nd Juno was unable to make Resmondo pay for two misplays.  Juno was base hitting while Resmondo was hitting home runs early in the game.  A lot of players were were also sliding their front foot off the front of the batter’s box mat as well.  In the top of the 3rd Resmondo grounded into another double play but Juno came in and put up a zero.  Then when Resmondo failed to finish off Juno, Juno scored 11 in the bottom of the 4th and then scored 17 on 9 home runs in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game at 38-38.  But in the top of the 6th a throwing error by Juno led to a 3 run homer by Jeremy Yates, a 2 run shot by Connell, another misplay, and a 2 run homer by Marshburn and suddenly Resmondo had a 55-38 lead and they went on to win 57-46 out homering Juno 36-25.  Kyle Pearson #23 was 7-8 in the game with 5 HR and 10 RBI, while Everett Williams was 8-8, and Tyler Marshbrun 7-7 with 5 HR and 9 RBI.  In the 3rd quarterfinal it was all RoofX as they jumped out to a 27-1 lead on I-57 Roofing going into the bottom of the 2nd and I-57 uncharacteristically never got it going and RoofX cruised to a 32-5 win in 4 innings.  Andrew Collins, Austyn Dawe, Chris Anninos, and Faron Fry were all perfect on base in the win as they out homered I-57 15-2.  In the final quarterfinal game WestPoint scored 15 in the bottom of the 1st and left fellow ‘AA’ team Ataraxis on the field with an 8 run 5th, 34-19.  Filip Washington at lead off was 5-5 and Adam Kaminski was 4-5 with 3 HR and 11 RBI in the win.

Quarterfinal #3 – I-57 Roofing vs RoofX.

Quarterfinal #4 Ataraxis vs WestPoint.

Final 4 Recap

Semifinal #1 – Proton’s Brandon Streets hits against Resmondo’s Travis Clark.

The semifinals began early Saturday evening after a brief thunderstorm passed through.  Even though the temperature remained in the mid 80’s it felt like the rain pulled some of the humidity out of the air.  Resmondo came out swinging on Proton jumping out to a 22-6 lead.  But Proton answered with a 20 run bottom of the 3rd to pull to within 1 run 27-26.  From there the game went back and forth but a Proton throwing error in the top of the 4th may have been the difference as Resmondo pulled out a 58-50 win, out homering Proton 37-31.  Proton had the hammer in the bottom of the 7th, down 11 but Travis Clark the Resmondo pitcher got some mishits.  Kyle Pearson #23 was again 8-8 with 5 HR and 9 RBI.  Jeremy Yates was 7-8 with 5 HR and 6 RBI.  And Heath Barnes batting last was 7-7 with 6 HR, 9 RBI, and 7 runs scored in the win!  In the 2nd semifinal RoofX took advantage of a couple of misplayed WestPoint grounders to go up 21-2.  Then RoofX got WestPoint to go down in order in the top of the 2nd 1-2-3 and came in and scored 23 runs on 15 homers in the bottom of the 2nd and didn’t have to bat in the 3rd in a 44-5 run rule win.  RoofX out homered WestPoint 28-2.  Joe Bennett hit 4 HR in the game and Bennett, Arlis Miller, Jeremy Fry, Chris Anninos, and Logan Rogers were all perfect on base in the game.

Semifinal #2 – WestPoints Rich Racobaldo hits against RoofX pitcher Kyle Center.

Winner’s Final Recap

Resmondo’s Jeremy Yates tied the record for most homers in a Smoky game with 7 in the winner’s final.  And most of them were creatures!

The winner’s bracket finals Saturday night was a 2.5 hour long game between #1 seed RoofX and #2 seed Resmondo.  The heavyweight battle the Smoky fans look forward to each year.  RoofX scored 19 in the top of the 1st, landing the first blow.  In the bottom of the 1st the first 9 out of 10 Resmondo batters homered and it looked like they would cruise past RoofX early when middle infielder Jeremy Fry made a nice play on a grounder then a spectacular diving catch of a KP23 liner to hold Resmondo to 11 runs.  But momentum shifted in the top of the 2nd when RoofX hit two straight lineouts to start the inning and then left the bases loaded.  Both teams scored in every inning but it was Resmondo’s 18 run bottom of the 5th that pushed them out to a 57-44 lead and they left RoofX on the field 64-46 in the bottom of the 6th with a 7 run inning.  Resmondo out homered RoofX 44-32, shattering the old Smoky record for home runs in a game.  Jeremy Yates was the latest to tie the home run record for one game with 7.  And Kyle Pearson #23 was 8-9 with 6 HR and 10 RBI in the big win.

Loser’s Bracket Recap

The loser’s bracket played out all day Saturday on all 6 fields across Maryville and Alcoa Tennessee.  In the top of the loser’s bracket Texas Kings upset Legendz 28-13 and SNI won 2 games.  But BeHappy beat Fishers 53-34, Texas Kings 41-18, Rivalz 38-33, and upset the Juno major team 63-47 before losing to WestPoint in a fake injury forfeit late Saturday night.  In that Juno game the BeHappy pitcher Chaunsey Sumner tied the record for home runs in a game with 7 and was on deck when BeHappy won by the run rule.  So BeHappy finished tied for 5th.  In the bottom half of the bracket Primetime won 4 straight games and Dirty Vegas 3, before I-57 Roofing and Ataraxis dropped into the loser’s bracket and sent each home.  And then late Saturday I-57 Roofing beat Ataraxis 38-22 and then had the highest score of the tournament in beating Proton 67-39 to make it to Sunday with Proton finishing tied for 5th.

Sunday Recap

Zane Migues was back in action for I-57 and it made a difference.

On Sunday morning two tired ‘AA’ teams I-57 Roofing and WestPoint battled it out in the 4th place game.  WestPoint went up 13-3 after 1 inning but it was all I-57 the rest of the way as they hit 4 straight home runs to start the top of the 2nd, scored 13 runs, added 13 more in the top of the 4th, and run ruled WestPoint with a 19 run 5th, 53-23 as relief pitcher Mike Nino seemed to have the WestPoint offense off balance.  In the loser’s bracket finals, I-57 stuck with RoofX until the top of the 3rd when RoofX put up 29 runs on 8 home runs.  RoofX began the inning with 7 straight base hits, then 5 straight walks before a double play and the 8 home runs.  RoofX then cruised to a 47-24 win in 4 innings.  Arlis Miller was 6-6, Logan Rogers 5-5, and Andrew Collins was 6-6 with 5 HR and 12 RBI in the win.

This set the heavyweight rematch I think we all wanted at this point and it felt like we could have an instant classic and possibly a new total runs record since RoofX has taken it to Resmondo for the better part of two years now.  But an ultra-focused and perfectly tweaked lineup by Resmondo manager Brett Helmer managing at home from the livestream destroyed all thoughts of RoofX having any chance to win this game.  Resmondo scored 31 runs on 15 home runs in the bottom of the 1st and 20 runs on 14 home runs in the 2nd.  They chased both the starting pitcher Kyle Center and the backup pitcher Austyn Dawe.  They hit 7 straight home runs at one point in the 2nd in extreme heat and humidity with the Hardcore balls baking in the sun.  Roofx managed 16 runs in the top of the 3rd to extend the game but Resmondo came in and got home runs from Yates and Jones, then a walk by Everett Williams, and a walk off 30 run rule homer by Phil Matte to win the game and the Smoky 55-25!  They out homered RoofX 32-10 and scored 55 runs on just 6 outs in the championship game!  Phil Matte, Jeremy Yates, Bradley Jones, Tyler Marshburn, and Heath Barnes were all perfect on base in the game.  Matte hit 6 HR and had 13 RBI.  Heath Barnes 5 HR and 10 RBI and Barnes and Marshburn were named co-MVP’s.  It was Resmondo’s 3rd Smoky win in a row and 15th in Resmondo’s storied history.

It was the highest scoring Smoky in history when you go by runs per 7 innings (53.6) beating the old record of 49 two years ago.  The Hardcore ball was just way too much ball for the small baseball field and the field #4 softball field next to it.  But credit Resmondo for superior ball striking ability and the pitching of Travis Clark and the defense of his middle infielders Marshburn and Barnes, and especially the left field play of Bradley Jones who made knuckleball catch after knuckleball catch all tournament long as opposing left fielders struggled to hall them in.

Long Bomber of the Week!

Kyle Pearson #23 was Long Bomber of the Week.  He tied for the most home runs (23) with Andrew Collins, Jeremy Yates, and Austyn Dawe who all get honorable mention.   Also Pearson was walked 3 times in the final game.   I think Donnie Walsh from Juno had the longest home run at one point on Saturday.   I also heard Buddy Wolf from Juno hit one over on the Denso Manufacturing plant field that hit the building which is 489 feet away at its closest point so the ball most likely went over 500 feet and that was a Pro-M ball, not the Hardcore they were using at Sandy Springs.   Also honorable mention to Jeremy Yates again and Chauncey Sumner from BeHappy who each tied the all time record for most homers in a game (7).   And finally to BeHappy’s Drew Hall who hit 26 home runs in the tournament but didn’t get the trophy because the last games stats didn’t count due to their team forfeiting.

Buddy Wolf hits the Denso Manufacturing building 489+ feet away.

Drew Hall from BeHappy hit 26 HR but they said the ones hit in their forfeit didn’t count.

BeHappy’s Chauncey Sumner tied the record for Smoky HR in a game with 7.
