Thursday Recap

Resmondo takes on Proton in the quarterfinals.

Seattle Dual #1 began on Thursday morning at 9 am at the Hogan Park in Kent, Washington just outside of Seattle.  It was cool in the 60’s and overcast the first 3 days of the tournament.  There were 24 teams overall, 22 from the Conference USSSA, and they came from 12 different states.  All 4 Major teams and 4 of the Conference ‘AA’ teams were in attendance.  They used the Dudley Pro-M ball on 300 foot fields except for field #1 where they used the Hardcore ball on a baseball field with 330-370-395-375-370-330 dimensions.  BeHappy/Proton/Standard (AZ-A) scored 12 in the 1st and 11 in the 3rd to beat Stay Solid#22 (WA-C) 31-10.  Leadoff hitter Blake Lively was 5-5 with 7 RBI, Danny Higa 5-5, and Lukas Owens 4-4 in a win where BeHappy out homered Stay Solid 11-3.  Twisted D / A3 / JAG Apparel (OR-B) run ruled regional rival Sticky Bandits (WA-C) 31-12.  Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) led Classy / NVH / Proton (AZ-B) 23-4 early on and beat them in 4 innings after scoring 23 runs in the top of the 4th out homering them 11-1.  Joel Sanchez was 6-6 and rookie pickup David Chabut was 5-5 with 3 HR and 8 RBI for Reach.  Washington’s top team GTL/Legacy/Dirty (WA-B) beat SOMERS STONEWORKS / KINGS DRYWALL (WA-C) 31-25 in a battle of 1st time Conference teams.  Legendz/Beloli/MSGA Sports (OK-A) walked thru Elite Climate Control (OR-C) 29-3 as Jared Vanderhoof, John Schlabach, and Kevin Miller all went 4-4.  CutThroat/EliteSec/Soares/Coursey (CA-B) shut out Axe/Precision 360 (WA-C) 15-0.  It was Axe’s debut as a conference team.  Juno Athletics / LSR (NJ-Major) having to play a “play in” game due to their lack of points on the season run ruled Team Rylie (CA-C) 35-12.  And J&I/Westcoast/HellsCanyonSports (WA-B) who always seems to play well in the Seattle Dual over the years beat Skanger’s/ Kautz Fire Work’s (WA-C) 26-25 to finish off the last of the Dual #1 “play in” games.

In the “Round of 16” the top 8 Conference teams who had received bye’s seeded by points joined the battle.  The balls were flying as most every team that played 7 innings used all of their home runs on the 300 foot fields.  Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S (FL-Major) who picked up Steele Lewis from Sports Reach during the week went 7 innings with BeHappy.  BeHappy with 8 home runs left, was trailing Resmondo 30-27 when they put up a zero in the bottom of the 6th.  Resmondo then scored 11 on their last 3 homers in the top of the 7th and BeHappy down 14, scored 9 on 4 to make is close but lost 41-36 leaving 4 HR on the table.  Kyle Pearson #23 was 7-7 in the game, Bradley Jones 6-6, and Travis Clark moved to lead off was 6-7 while hitting for the cycle and driving in 9 runs.  Blake Lively for BeHappy, playing in his home city, was again 6-6.  Proton/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) one of, if not the best team in the country on 300 foot fields, scored 15 in the top of the 1st and 3rd innings to run rule Twisted D in 4 innings 39-16 out homering them 12-7.  Brandon Streets was 5-6 with 3 homers and 10 RBI and Jeff Roxby was 5-5 in the win.  In an early battle of ‘AA’ teams Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren/BAF (VA-AA) blasted Sports Reach 36-16 in 4 innings scoring 16 in the 2nd and 11 in the 3rd.  Rookie pickup Bryce Evans playing right field for Chick-fil-a was 4-4 in his debut.  Evans came from the military circuit.  ATARAXIS/SONNYS/JBLNEWBREEDKOVALBAF (MD-AA) playing their first game beat GTL 42-27.  Bay Area Legends (CA-AA) scored 13 in the top of the 1st inning and finished strong to hold off Legendz in a high scoring 7 inning game 48-44.  Cheap Suits /REPUBLIC REALTY /ESP (CA-A) down 24-17 going into the bottom of the 7th against CutThroatSports, scored 8 runs – 3 with two outs – to win on a walk off single by Brent McClure.  Daniel Cayton and Carlos Abrigo were each 5-5 in that win as they out homered CutThroat 10-6 on the baseball field #1.  Juno Athletics beat Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) 35-16 scoring 11 in the 2nd and 10 in the 3rd to win in 4 innings.  Joe Boland, Matthew Valencia, and Chad Mullins were each 5-5.  And J&I pulled off the upset of the year trailing RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major) 18-16 going into the 7th inning.  An abnormally slow RoofX offense who still had 7 home runs to hit on a 300 foot field, put up a zero in the top of the 7th.  J&I came in and got a single by Kelly Romano, a fielder’s choice, a single by Jaren Taijeron, a single by Ezzard Wilkins, and a walk off 3 run homer by Todd Ray to win it 20-18.  J&I out homered the major team 9-7 in the game as Todd Ray who batted last for J&I went 3-4 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in the victory!

J&I’s Todd Ray hits a walk off homer to upset RoofX.

The tournament quickly moved along Thursday afternoon to the quarterfinals.  Resmondo jumped all over Proton leading 17-0 on 9 of their 16 allowed home runs going into the bottom of the 2nd and it was 17-6 after 2 complete innings.  Resmondo extended their lead to 25-6 on 13 home runs going into the bottom of the 3rd and used their last home run in the top of the 5th.  In the bottom of the 5th Proton, down 14 with 6 to hit, slowly came back and trailed just 36-31 going into the 6th with 5 homers to hit.  Then they got Resmondo to go down in order 1-2-3 and Brian Dezern tied it at 36-36 and they went on to score 8 runs to take a 3 run lead going into the 7th.  Resmondo in the 7th with no homers, scratched across 2 runs but lost 39-38.  Proton was led by pitcher Dan Kirkwood in the leadoff spot as he went 6-7, Ryan Honeycutt who went 6-6, and Joey Capparelli who hit 4 homers and drove in 9 runs.

In another quarterfinal Ataraxis scored 13 in the top of the 2nd and had a 28-20 lead on Chick-fil-a when Chick-fil-a scored 16 on 5 in the bottom of the 6th to win 36-30.  In that inning they reached safely 13 times in a row to start the inning.  Jacob Clifton was 6-6, Bryce Evans 5-5, and Justin Ogletree 4-5.  In the bottom half of the bracket Bay Area Legends scored 17 in the bottom of the 3rd to beat rival Cheap Suits in 5 innings 31-14, out homering them 12-5.  John Franklin and Nick Day at the top of the order were 10-10.  And Juno Athletics Major team struggled past the upset minded J&I 31-25.

The semifinals were a long drawn out affair lasting over 5 hours.  Proton scored 28 runs on 9 homers including a grand slam by Jeff Roxby and went up 36-3 at one point against Chick-fil-a.  But Chick-fil-a made it a 7 inning game scoring 13 in the bottom of the 3rd and 13 in the bottom of the 4th to pull to within 40-37.  Proton though was just a little better scoring without home runs down the stretch and held on to win 51-40.  There were 101 hits in the game.  Brandon Streets and Ryan Honeycutt were each 7-8 in the game and Tyler Dickens had 11 RBI.  10 of Chick-fil-a’s 11 hitters had at least one home run.  In the 2nd semifinal which closed the night Thursday, Juno run ruled Bay Area Legends 44-22.

Proton’s Jeff Roxby hits a grand slam in the semifinals vs Chick-fil-a.  They scored 28 on 9 HR in the top of the 1st.

Friday Recap

The winner’s final was played Friday at noon.  Proton watched their 20-5 lead over Juno Athletics evaporate when they put up zero’s in the 4th and 5th innings as both teams walked runs in with the bases loaded.  In the top of the 6th Proton’s Chad Erickson hit a grand slam to tie the game at 26-26 and they went on to score 19 runs, batting around the order after the 2nd out.  In the bottom of the 6th Juno answered with 11 runs but then Proton pitcher Andrew Vitcak stabbed a laser up the middle and another middle shot ricocheted off of him to an infielder for an out and Proton entered the 7th with a 39-37 lead.  In that 7th inning both teams had one homer left.  In the top of the 7th Proton with 2 outs and no runs across, got a 3 run homer from Bryan Dezern and in the bottom half Juno got only a 2 run homer from Joe Boland and Proton advanced to the championship 42-39.

The loser’s bracket played out all afternoon and evening Thursday and all day Friday.  In the top half of the bracket BeHappy made an incredible run beating Elite 24-9, Twisted D 25-10, J&I 16-15, Sports Reach 45-41, and Chick-fil-a 43-34, before Resmondo sent them home in 4th place game 46-16.  Both of BeHappy’s two losses in the tournament were to Resmondo.  In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket CutThroatSports beat Sticky Bandits, Legendz, and Ataraxis before Resmondo beat them.  And RoofX was upset by Primetime 34-32.

In the loser’s bracket final Friday afternoon Resmondo who was scoring 40 runs plus a game, got a grand slam from Tyler Marshburn in the top of the 4th to put them up 49-16 over Juno and they went on to win 52-22.  Travis Clark, Kyle Pearson #23, Everett Williams, Jeremy Yates, Steele Lewis, and Tyler Marshburn all reached base 6 times and almost everyone else 5 times in the win.

In the championship the Resmondo onslaught continued as they scored 21 on 7 homers in the top of the 1st, 10 in the 2nd, 16 in the 3rd, and 9 in the 4th to beat Proton 56-21 and force the “if” game.  Kyle Pearson was 7-7, Steele Lewis 6-6, Tyler Marshburn 6-6, Bubba Mack 6-6, and Travis Clark had 11 RBI in the win.  That 9 run 4th broke Resmondo’s string of 7 consecutive double digit scoring innings.

In the “if” game Resmondo struck again scoring 21 runs but doing so on 9 home runs.  Proton responded with 13 runs on just 3 homers but nice infield defense from Kyle Pearson at 1st and Heath Barnes in the middle kept them from scoring a lot more.  In the top of the 2nd Resmondo scored 7 more but on 4 homers and led 28-13 but had a 12-3 home run disadvantage and great defense by Jeff Roxby at 1st base and Dan Herren in the middle kept them from a lot more runs.  In the bottom of the 2nd a great play by Greg Connell ranging towards second and throwing to first and suddenly Proton’s 1st two batters in the inning were out.  But then they scored an amazing 20 runs after 2 outs and grabbed a 29-28 lead on a 3 run homer by Dan Herren and ended the inning up 33-28 on an Acevedo grand slam!  In the top of the 3rd Resmondo went ahead 36-33 on a laser grand slam off the top of the fence by KP23.  And Proton after again making the 1st two outs in the inning, grabbed the lead back 38-36 on a Ryan Honeycutt bomb that went over the center field trees!  In the top of the 4th Resmondo used their last homer on a 2 run shot by Steele Lewis to tie the game at 38 but Dan Kirkwood at pitcher made a nice play to end the inning 39-38.  In the top of the 5th Kirkwood turned a double play to hold Resmondo to zero and they got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 6th.  But while Resmondo put up two zero’s in a row in the 5th and 6th, Proton scored 5 in each of their half innings and went on to win without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th, 49-42.  There were 101 hits in the game.  Brandon Streets and Jeff Roxby were each 7-7 and Anthony Acevedo had 10 RBI in the win.  It was Proton’s 2nd tournament win of the season.

Dual #2 began Friday as Dual #1 was still playing all of the big games.  Dual #2 was unlimited home runs with 80 foot bases.  They used the Dudley Hardcore ball on the baseball field with 330-370-395-375-370-330 dimensions for as many games in the winner’s bracket as they could.  The loser’s bracket and some winner’s bracket games were played on the 300 foot fields and at some point they ran out or ran low on the Pro-M balls for the 300 foot fields and ended up using the Hardcore on those fields as well.  Legendz, J&I, Twisted D, Sports Reach, BeHappy, CutThroatSports, and Skangers all won their “play in” games Friday.  Then Friday evening the “Round of 16” was played and things got wild!  Resmondo run ruled Legendz 56-16 on a 300 foot field, scoring 17 in the 1st, 27 in the 2nd, and 12 in the 3rd.  KP23 was 7-7, Phil Matte 6-6, Steele Lewis 6-6, Tyler Marshburn 6-6, and Kyle Pearson OG (original) was 6-6.  And Bradley Jones hit 5 home runs and drove in 16 RBI.  Cheap Suits scored 32 runs on the baseball field to beat Twisted D 32-17 as Daniel Cayton, Carlos Abrigo, and Dante Broome each went 5-5.  Sports Reach on a 300 field scored 8 in the bottom of the 1st, 11 in the 2nd, and 28 in the 3rd to leave Primetime on the field 47-15.  Hartling, Fyffe, Sanchez, Welborn, and Chabut were each 5-5.  Sanchez hit 4 HR and drove in 11 RBI.  Ataraxis on the baseball field beat J&I 34-18.  Bay Area Legends run ruled BeHappy 28-13 on a 300 field in 6 innings.  Proton beat CutThroatSports in a slugfest on a 300 foot field 56-50 even though CutThroat out homered them 21-20.  Pitcher Andrew Vitcak was 7-7 in the game and Tyler Dickens hit 4 HR and drove in 12 RBI.  RoofX beat Skangers on the baseball field 36-6 in 3 innings as they scored 21 runs in the bottom of the 1st and hit 20 home runs in the game!  Andrew Collins was 4-4 with 4 HR and 11 RBI.  And on a 300 foot field Juno Athletics scored 15 in the top of the 1st, 15 in the 2nd, and 37 in the 3rd to beat Chick-fil-a 68-19.  Juno hit 39 home runs in the game.  Josh Riley was 7-8 with 5 HR and 11 RBI and Mason Farmer hit 6 HR in the win.

Saturday Recap

Sports Reach’s Scott Hartling hit 3 homers in a row to start their quarterfinal game against Ataraxis.

On Saturday the rest of the winner’s bracket was played on the baseball fields and the games were very solid and entertaining.  Resmondo beat Cheap Suits 35-13 in 5 innings as they hit 19 home runs to Cheap Suits 3.  They were led by KP23, Phil Matte, Everett Williams, and KPOG who were all perfect on base with KP23 hitting 4 home runs and driving in 10 RBI.  Sports Reach got a grand slam from Anthony Ottrando in the top of the 2nd to go up 5-2 on Ataraxis.  Ataraxis then grabbed a 6-5 lead on a Chris Greinert 3 run homer in the bottom of the 2nd.  In the top of the 4th Sports Reach’s Scott Hartling hit his 3rd homer of the game but Ataraxis who scored in every inning won the dogfight 21-18 even though they were out homered 6-4.  Sports Reach couldn’t get to Hartling in the top of the 7th who was 4-4 in the game.  At noon it was Proton and Bay Area.  Bay Area playing without a good chunk of their normal starters put up 11 runs on 5 homers in the bottom of the 1st and pitcher Shawn Jones got a strike out looking to end the top of the 2nd.  In the top of the 3rd Proton’s Anthony Acevedo hit his 2nd homer of the game and in the bottom of the 3rd Shawn Jones hit a key 3 run homer for Bay Area to go up 17-8.  In the bottom of the 5th Proton 3rd baseman Bryan Dezern and relief pitcher Andrew Vitcak made nice plays to hold Bay Area to a 20-11 lead but Proton never could totally complete the comeback and Bay Area won impressively 24-19 out homering Proton 8-7.  John Franklin was 4-5 with 2 HR and rookie pickup Drew Rea 4-4 on base in the upset win.  In the final quarterfinal game RoofX scored at least 5 runs in every inning, in a game marred by a number of double plays hit into by both teams.  At one point RoofX brothers Faron and Jeremy Fry made great back to back diving plays on the infield and Juno Ahtletics just could never get their offense in full gear.  And when Juno, down 27-13, only managed 1 run in the top of the 5th, RoofX left them on the field on a Logan Rogers 2 run homer 29-14.  RoofX out homered Juno 11-7 as Chris Anninos, Austyn Dawe, Terry Lambright, Andrew Collins, and Logan Rogers all were on base 4-4.  Rogers had 3 doubles and a homer and Lambright 3 homers in the win.  22 of RoofX’s 29 hits were for extra bases.

Bay Area pitcher Shawn Jones hits a 3 run homer vs Proton.

The semifinals late Saturday afternoon were entertaining as well.  Resmondo scored in every inning and shut out Ataraxis in the top of the 1st to take a 15-4 lead.  But just when you thought Ataraxis was rolling over, they put up 11 in the 4th, 8 in the 5th, and 10 in the 6th to take a 33-28 lead.  That lead “refocused” Resmondo who then scored 12 on 7 homers to take the lead back and they held Ataraxis scoreless in the top of the 7th to win 40-33, out homering Ataraxis 23-14.  Travis Clark and Everett Williams were each 6-6 in the win.  In the other semifinal, RoofX who struggled offensively most of the weekend, continued to struggle putting up a zero in the bottom of the 1st and trailing Bay Area Legends 10-4 midway through the game.  RoofX then outscored Bay Area 13-7 down the stretch, blanking Bay Area in the 5th and 7th innings.  In the bottom of the 7th down 17-10 RoofX somehow scored 7 to tie it on a two out single by Logan Rogers making Bay Area pay for two errors earlier in the inning.  In the top of the 8th RoofX got a double play to hold Bay Area scoreless and won on an Austyn Dawe single in the bottom of the 8th 18-17.

The winner’s final was the heavyweight matchup between RoofX and Resmondo with of course the unlimited home runs on a big baseball field.  Resmondo grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 1st 10-3 on 3 home runs and slowly separated from RoofX over 5 innings to leave them on the field in the bottom of the 5th 39-24.  RoofX made a few errors in this one and Resmondo with their power made them pay.  Resmondo out homered RoofX 18-13 as Travis Clark and KP23 led the way each going 5-6 and Jeremy Yates was 5-5 with 3 HR and 7 RBI.

The loser’s bracket played out all day long on the 300 foot fields with the unlimited homers it was CRAZY!  Twisted D beat Sticky Bandits 40-25 and upset Legendz 50-19 before Juno dropped down and sent them home 45-10.  J&I beat GTL 33-23 and upset Primetime 63-45 before Proton dropped down and sent them home 42-22.  Then Juno beat Proton in a battle of Major teams on 300 foot fields with unlimited homers 66-51 out homering Proton 42-32 and there were 116 hits in the game.  Buddy Wolf and Mason Farmer each hit 6 HR and Wolf had 13 RBI.  But then Ataraxis dropped down and beat Juno 43-28 to win the top half of the loser’s bracket.  In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket CutThroatSports beat Axe 35-25 and BeHappy 71-54 before Sports Reach dropped down and sent them packing 55-35.  And Chick-fil-a beat Team Rylie 19-4 on the baseball field, and Skangers 36-13 on a 300 foot field before Cheap Suits dropped down and beat them 57-34 and then Sports Reach beat Cheap Suits 52-31 and Bay Area 42-25 to make it to the 4th place game late Saturday night vs Ataraxis.  That 4th place game was on the baseball field where both Ataraxis and Sports Reach scored in every inning but Ataraxis pulled out to a 29-16 lead after 4 innings when the curfew hit and the win was given to Ataraxis.  Greinert, Kirsten, Latimore, and Van Til were all 4-4 in the win.

Sunday Recap

Andrew Collins and RoofX force the “if” game Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning in the loser’s bracket Ataraxis faked an injury 2 batters into the game and forfeited to finish 3rd.

So, the championship was a rematch between RoofX and Resmondo and was played in beautiful 65 degree weather with sunshine on the baseball field.  In the top of the 1st RoofX scored 6 on a 3 run homer by Terry Lambright and in the bottom half of the inning a great catch by Chris Anninos in left field and a long run catch by Arliss Miller in right center held Resmondo to 3 runs on a 2 run homer by Everett Williams.  In the top of the 2nd the 1st two RoofX hitters made outs but then they went on a doubles barrage and scored 9 runs.  In the bottom of the 2nd pitcher Kyle Center got a strike out looking.  The wind was blowing across the diamond from left to right at 10 mph and it was clear that the RoofX hitters were making the adjustment better than Resmondo.  In the bottom of the 3rd Anninos made a shoestring catch then a diving play by Jeremy Fry in the middle ended it with RoofX up 17-10.  In the top of the 4th the Resmondo defense stepped up as Travis Clark got a RoofX hitter to foul out and a diving/sliding catch by Bradley Jones in left field held them scoreless.  In the bottom of the 4th RoofX returned the favor as Kyle Center stabbed a liner at his feet to shut out Resmondo.  From there RoofX slowly separated to a 37-27 win to force the “if” game although Resmondo out homered them 8-7.  Andrew Collins was 6-7 with 2 HR and 6 RBI and Kyle Center 6-6 in the win.  In the “if” game it was all Resmondo, offensively, defensively, and with the power as they jumped out to a 20-3 lead and after adding 10 in the top of the 4th, won by the run rule 32-10 out homering RoofX 13-2!  It was Resmondo’s 1st tournament win of the season.  KP23 was 5-5 with 4 HR and 10 RBI in the win.
