Thursday Recap
Joe Boland’s homer was fair although it did have a massive hook.
The 2025 Conference “Pocket City” Dual was played at the Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville, Indiana. There were 26 teams overall and 25 from the Conference USSSA. The 1st double elimination tournament started on Thursday morning on 8 fields at 8 am. The weather was hot and extremely humid. They used the Dudley Pro-M ball on 300-305-310-315-310-305-300 foot dimensions with artificial turf infields. The infielders struggled all 4 days on the subtle bad hops that for some reason these infields have consistently produced over the years. Maybe it is the coconut husk/white sand mix they use in place of rubber pellets? The wind affected games throughout the week and blew in at 5 to 15 mph on the main field, Red #5, pretty much all weekend.
At 8 am the “play in” games began and it was Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren/BAF (VA-AA) jumping out to a 23-8 lead on XR/Stellas Wish/Combat MFG (MO-C) and leaving them on the field 29-14 in a 4 run bottom of the 5th. Deontre Porter, one of the league’s leading hitters, was 4-4 with 3 HR and 6 RBI and leadoff hitter Kade Christensen was 4-5 with 4 runs scored. Newly acquired Brandon Jonas did the pitching. Remember Chick-fil-a just recently “traded” pitchers with Sports Reach – Ogletree for Jonas. DIRTY VEGAS/BDC/ARK CONCEPTS (TX-A) got a one out bases loaded walk off single by Ben Dunn to beat I-57 Roofing / I-55 Logistics (MO-B) 30-29 in the bottom of the 7th even though I-57/I-55 out homered Dirty Vegas 9-8. Zach Goleniak was 5-6 and hit for the cycle and Daniel Larson was 5-5 with 3 HR and 7 RBI in the win. BeHappy/Proton/Standard (AZ-A) jumped out to a 15-0 lead on Q/NEX/MRE (KS-C) and won in 4 innings 24-2. Blake Lively at leadoff and Jagger Harjo in the 3 spot were each 4-4. Bay Area Legends (CA-A), the #1 ‘A’ team in the country, easily run ruled the non-conference GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andrews (AL-B) team 27-5. In a battle of ‘A’ teams Oklahoma’s Legendz/Beloli/MSGA Sports knocked off Florida’s SNI/LOB/DEMARINI 40-23 scoring 11 runs in the 3rd and 12 in the 6th to win in 6 innings. Kevin Miller was 6-6 and newly acquired lefty Steven Pierce hit 3 HR and drove in 8 runs. In a battle of two of the nation’s top ‘B’ teams, Fishers/StoltzfusWelding/All Hustle (PA-B) tied with F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar (TX-B) at 22-22 going into the 7th, outscored them 8-3 to win 30-25. Both teams hit all 8 of their home runs. David Smucker the tall Fisher’s first baseman was 6-6 and hit for the cycle in the victory. Cheap Suits /REPUBLIC REALTY /ESP (CA-A) jumped out to a 19-1 lead on Steve’s/RS/RBSJ/GRZY (OH-C) and beat them 26-5 in 4 innings. Steve’s was playing in their first conference event of the season. Justice Arranda, Charlie Cano, and Brandon Traylor were each 4-4 in the win. I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA (IL-AA) crushed Tafn/Trust/GoSports/Prime Threadz (MI-C) 32-2, scoring 19 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Jake Hathaway and Nic Perkins were each 4-4 in the win. After the tournament I-57 manager Steve Robbs, the architect of their team the past 3 years, announced he is stepping away from the team. We wish him the best and he will be missed. Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) went 7 innings with the Chick-fil-A / BAF Sports (VA-B) ‘B’ team winning 42-30 after scoring 14 in the bottom of the 2nd and 20 in the bottom of the 3rd. Jason Branch who came out of retirement was 6-6 in the leadoff spot setting up Scott Hartling who hit 3 HR and drove in 8 RBI. And Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) rolled through Anarchy/Rebel/TAFN/Midstate/PT (MI-B) 33-12 in 4 innings. The top 3 in the lineup – Mike Williams, Ira Brown, and Jarvis Riggins were a combined 12-15 with 6 HR and 16 RBI. Sean Ulmer and John Michael Matthews were each 4-4.
RoofX 1st baseman Austyn Dawe did it with the glove, the bat, and did a lot of pitching as well.
The “Round of 16” began promptly at 9:45 AM. WestPoint (IN-AA) trailing the Chick-fil-a ‘AA’ team 28-19 going into the bottom of the 7th, scored 12 runs including 10 after the 2nd out, and won on a Kyle Johnson 3 run walk off homer 30-28! Johnson and leadoff hitter Filip Washington were 5-6 and Canaan Baum was 5-5 in the win. Veteran Steve Edwards was playing for Chick-fil-a. He had been away from the conference for over a year. Welcome back Steve! Ataraxis scored 10 in the bottom of the 2nd and held off Dirty Vegas 22-21 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Dirty Vegas still had 4 home runs to hit. On a field where neither team hit their home run limit of 14, Jason Martel for Ataraxis was 3-4 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. BeHappy scored 12 in the top of the 5th to go up 21-9 and held Bay Area scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to win 23-16 out homering them 9-8. Blake Lively was again 5-5 in the win. #2 Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S took to the field vs Legendz. Both teams left the bases loaded in key situations and had some inning crushing double plays. Legendz shortstop John Schlabach made an incredible diving stop and Resmondo left fielder Bradley Jones robbed a home run. But Legendz pinch hitter Cody Anthony hit a 2 out 3 run homer which led to 10 runs on 2 outs in the top of the 5th and Resmondo never could quite get their offense to have that huge inning, and Legendz pulled off the upset 46-39 behind newly acquired pitcher Shawn Jones. John Schlabach was 6-7 and hit for the cycle, big right hand hitter Gary Levesque was 7-7 with 3 HR and 9 RBI, and last hitter Nathan McGray was 6-6 in the victory. It was Resmondo’s first loss of the season to a non Major or non AA team. The upsets of Major teams continued as Sports Reach down 33-11 at one point to Juno Athletics / LSR (NJ-Major) scored 11 in the top of the 4th and 17 in the top of the 5th to pull to within 40-39. In the top of the 6th Jason Magnum used the last of Sports Reach’s 14 home runs to take a 42-40 lead and they held on to win 42-41 as Juno scored zero in the bottom of the 5th and 6th with no homers left and only 1 run in the bottom of the 7th. Josh Fyffe and Jason Gilfillan were each 6-6 as newly acquired pitcher Justin Ogletree continued to grind out wins on the mound and he was hitting lasers with the bat. In the bottom half of the winner’s bracket #1 seed RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major) began their journey with a 35-8 – 5 inning win over Fisher’s. RoofX out homered Fisher’s 14-4 as Jeremy Fry and Andrew Collins were each 5-5 and Logan Rogers 4-4 in the win. The I-57 Roofing ‘AA’ team had their hands full with Cheap Suits but scored 11 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 28-19 lead and held on without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th 28-25. “Laser” Dave Johnson and Nic Perkins were each 5-5 in the win as Cheap Suits actually out homered I-57 10-9 in the game. And Proton/Str8play/Rebel/Dalsanders (CA-Major) playing without Brandon Streets scored 27 runs on 8 home runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to beat Primetime 44-14 in 3 innings. Dan Herren, Ryan Honeycutt, Ryan Harvey, Conner Murray, and Dan Kirkwood were all perfect on base in the win.
Sports Reach beat 3 Major teams in Dual #1.
The quarterfinals were played at 11:30 AM and 1:15 PM on Thursday. Ataraxis went up 11-0 on WestPoint, and it wasn’t until John Radich hit a 3 run homer in the top of the 3rd inning that WestPoint finally scored. Also in that inning Ataraxis center fielder Josh Kirsten robbed a home run. In the bottom of the 4th WestPoint left fielder Joey Kampfer returned the favor and robbed an Ataraxis homer. In the bottom of the 5th WestPoint turned a double play but they were down 19-8 and they got a runner doubled off the bases in the top of the 6th. In the top of the 7th WestPoint “freed up” but it was a little too late and Ataraxis advanced 21-15. Over on field Red 6, the ball was not flying as Legendz scored 8 in the bottom of the 5th to go up 13-3 on BeHappy who didn’t score in the first 4 innings. And Legendz held on to win without batting in the bottom of the 7th 14-11 even though BeHappy out homered them 7-6. Kyle Slicker was 4-4 with 2 HR in the win. Meanwhile RoofX was being held down by I-57 Roofing’s defense early in a low scoring game on the show field Red #5. And I-57 Roofing had a 6 run two out rally in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 6-5. But Jeremy Fry kept coming up with clutch hits for RoofX and Austyn Dawe cut a homer into the teeth of the wind to go up 15-13. In the bottom of the 6th I-57’s Nic Perkins, Mike Nino, and Adam Harrington homered to go up 17-16 but RoofX put up 5 on 3 homers in the top of the 7th and shut out I-57 in the bottom of the 7th to pull out a 21-17 victory. Fry and Dawe were each 4-5 in the win. Dawe defensively at 1st base made some big plays including a diver in the 4-3 hole to end the game. And Sports Reach playing their 3rd two hour plus game in a row scored 12 before the 1st out in the bottom of the 1st against Proton and went up 23-11 in the bottom of the 2nd. Sports Reach scored in every inning and entered the bottom of the 7th tied at 36-36 where Jason Magnum walked and Justin Ogletree used Sports Reach’s last home run (14) to walk off Proton. It was the 3rd major team to lose in the winner’s bracket and Sports Reach’s 2nd win over a major team in the tournament. Scott Hartling was 6-6, Jason Magnum 5-6 with 3 HR and 7 RBI, and Casey Scoggins was 5-5 in the win.
Ataraxis CF Josh Kirsten robs a WestPoint homer.
The semifinals were played at 6:30 PM Thursday. Ataraxis went down in order 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st against Legendz but neither team grabbed a significant advantage in the first 3 innings. Ataraxis won an appeal that the runner left early on a home run robbing catch in the bottom of the 3rd and it was 8-6 Legendz going into the 4th inning. In the 4th Ataraxis separated, scoring 10 runs and they held Legendz to zero in the bottom of the 5th to lead 20-10. In the top of the 7th Ataraxis put away Legendz by hitting a bunch of doubles and timely home runs, scoring 16 in the inning to go up 38-18 and they ended up winning 38-29. In the other semifinal with the wind blowing in, RoofX center fielder Brandon Yoder, the 2024 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, robbed a Sports Reach home run. Sports Reach answered with a diving catch by their center fielder Jordan Robinson and it was 12-11 Sports Reach after 2 innings. In the bottom of the 3rd Joel Sanchez hit a 2 out grand slam for Sports Reach to put them up 21-18. In the bottom of the 4th RoofX middle infielder Jeremy Fry stopped Sports Reach’s two out rally with a spectacular diving catch but Reach scored 10 in the inning. In the top of the 5th Reach held RoofX to 5 runs even though they made a bad error and it was 31-24 Sports Reach and tied 9-9 out of 14 HR. In the bottom of the 5th Sports Reach could not end it by the run rule even though they were up 13 and RoofX came alive scoring 13 runs tying the game on a 3 run homer by Andrew Collins. In the bottom of the 6th Sports Reach answered with a 9 run inning including a grand slam by Anthony Ottrando and used their last homer by Fyffe, a 3 run shot, to go up 46-37. In the top of the 7th Justin Ogletree pitching for Sports Reach held RoofX to just 1 run and Sports Reach advanced to the winner’s final 46-38.
RoofX middle man Jeremy Fry makes another spectacular catch.
The winner’s bracket final was played late Thursday night. Sports Reach had been playing basically since 8 am and they had beaten 3 Major teams – Juno, Proton, and RoofX. As it cooled off some the ball flew even better and this was a very high scoring game. Sports Reach led 13-3 after one inning against Ataraxis and then got a 5-10-5 double play to end the top of the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd Ataraxis grabbed a 23-21 lead on a Jason Martel 3 run homer which knuckled the whole way out. Both teams scored 3 or more runs in every inning of the game but Sports Reach kept up the pressure scoring 11 in the bottom of the 4th and 10 in the bottom of the 6th to leave Ataraxis on the field 55-40. Scott Hartling was 7-7 in the game. Josh Fyffe 6-7 with 10 RBI. And the entire team was either 6-7 or 5-7 in the game. I am not sure I have ever viewed a box score on a 300 foot field quite like that?
Sports Reach’s Anthony Ottrando hits a grand slam late in the winner’s final vs RoofX.
Friday Recap
The loser’s bracket played out Thursday and finished up Friday morning with Juno beating XR, I-57 Roofing’s ‘B’ team, BeHappy, and WestPoint, before dropping a late Thursday night game to RoofX 46-15. In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket it was Resmondo beating F1’s, Bay Area, Proton, the I-57 ‘AA’ team, and then getting a revenge win over Legendz, to make it to the 4th place game against RoofX Friday morning. In that game Resmondo took advantage of 4 RoofX throwing errors to take a 27-8 lead into the bottom of the 4th. But it was all RoofX the rest of the game as they scored 11 in the 4th, 18 in the 5th, and 14 in the bottom of the 6th to win 51-41. Terry Lambright was 7-7 with 3 HR and 9 RBI to lead RoofX. In the loser’s final nice plays by Ataraxis infielder Adam Ussery and center fielder Josh Kirst held RoofX to just 3 runs early on. In the bottom of the 2nd Jason Martel hit a 2 out grand slam to put Ataraxis up 9-8 and Chris Greinert hit a 2 out 3 run homer in the bottom of the 3rd to go up 14-12. But it was all RoofX the rest of the way in a 35-16 victory.
That set up a high noon showdown between RoofX and the “major killer” Sports Reach who was playing good softball for the first time all season. However RoofX had the momentum and their pitching and defense came through as they beat Sports Reach 23-8 in 5 innings to force the “if” game, and then they “double dipped” Reach 32-8 in the final game in 4 innings. Austyn Dawe was 4-4 with 4 HR and 8 RBI in the first game. And Collins, Dawe, Mcclanahan, and Rogers were perfect on base in the final game. Ryan Mcclanahan played in place of the injured Jeremy Fry in the championship but Fry was named tournament MVP.
Legendz takes on Ataraxis in the semifinals of Dual #2.
I will add dual #2 pictures to this report as I complete the condensed game videos over the next few weeks.
Dual #2 started late Friday afternoon while the Dual #1 championship was playing, so I (DW) didn’t see much of the games on Friday night as I went down and covered the women’s final 4. Sports Reach after beating XR Stella, lost to WestPoint on a two out walk off single by Ryan Ramirez. WestPoint needed 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win. Ramirez was 6-7 with 4 HR and 11 RBI for WestPoint. After Dirty Vegas beat Anarchy 38-35, they lost to Proton 40-24 in 4.5 innings as Ryan Harvey went 6-6 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. Tyler Dickens 6-6 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. And Bryan Dezern went 5-5 with 3 extra base hits. BeHappy after beating Steve’s 31-27, lost to I-57 Roofing 35-7 in 4 innings as Dave Johnson went 6-6 and the brothers David and Marcus Yoders went a combined 11-11 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. SNI after beating F1’s 44-23, put up a fight against Resmondo but lost 38-31. Legendz beat Fishers 40-38 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th as John Schlabach and Kevin Miller each went 6-6. Then Legendz down 31-17 to RoofX after RoofX scored 21 runs in the top of the 6th, ended up scoring 15 in the bottom of the 6th and then down 39-32 going into the bottom of the 7th scored 8 on 1 homer to win on a walk off single by pinch hitter Cody Anthony with one out! Steven Pierce was 6-6 in the win. What a weekend for Legendz beating Resmondo and RoofX! Cheap Suits after beating Q/NEX 35-11, lost to their ‘A’ west coast rival Bay Area Legends 35-20. The Chick-fil-a ‘AA’ team beat the Chick-fil-a ‘B’ team 29-27 as the ‘B’ team scored 4 in the bottom of the 7th and still had 6 home runs left. Both teams are sponsored by pitcher John Natolly. Then Chick-fil-a scored 22 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 12 in the bottom of the 3rd against Juno but still trailed going into the bottom of the 7th 42-41. In the bottom of the 7th after a flyout, a single by newly acquired Bradley Scott, and a fielder’s choice, Matt Brady hit a 2 out single and Daontre Porter hit a walk off double to pull off the upset of Juno 43-42! 6 of the Chick-fil-a players were either 5-6 or 5-7 in the game. And the last quarterfinal spot was filled by Ataraxis after they beat Primetime 34-19 as Chris Greinert and Orlando Castillo each went 5-5. Primetime had beaten the I-57/I-55 ‘B’ team to get there.
Saturday Recap
The quarterfinals of Dual #2 were played on Saturday starting at 11:30 AM central time and it was still very hot and humid. Over on Red field #7 WestPoint scored 10 in the bottom of the 3rd, 15 in the bottom of the 4th, and left Proton on the field 36-20 in the 5th. Filip Washington was 5-5 (3 were walks), Drew Smith and Canaan Baum were 4-4. Resmondo scored 7 on zero homers in the top of the 1st against I-57 Roofing. I-57’s Zane Migues fielding some hot shots turned a double play to blank Resmondo in the top of the 2nd. But Resmondo played some defense of their own getting an assist on a relay Bradley Jones to Tyler Marshburn to get an out at the plate and they were up 7-6 after 2 innings. In the top of the 4th Steele Lewis hit a 3 run homer to regain Resmondo’s lead. The strike zone was tight in this one and Bradley Jones robbed a homer in the bottom of the 4th. In the top of the 6th Jason Matusik for Resmondo hit a 2 out triple to put them up 27-26 and Resmondo went on a 6 home run barrage in the top of the 7th to win 36-28. Kyle Pearson (KP23) was 5-6 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in the win as I-57 left 7 home runs on the table with the wind blowing in on the show field. Chick-fil-a jumped out to a 15-3 lead on Ataraxis after one complete inning. But Ataraxis responded with 13 runs in the top of the 2nd, and they blanked Chick-fil-a in the bottom of the 2nd, 5th, and 6th innings to win 41-26 out homering them 14-7. Chris Greinert was on base 6-6 and Wik, Castillo, Ussery, and Cabot Van Til were all 5-6 in the win. In the final quarterfinal game Zach Sterry for Legendz hit a grand slam to put them up 7-3 in the 1st inning over Bay Area Legends. Bay Area responded with 6 runs in the top of the 2nd and turned a 1-10-5 double play to end the 2nd inning tied 9-9 when Carlin Yoder hit a 2 out bases loaded single. Both teams put up a zero in the 3rd inning and neither team scored more than 4 runs in an inning the rest of a tight game. The difference ended up being ex-players. Shawn Jones pitching for Legendz after pitching for Bay Area all year got a big game tying double to make it 14-14, and he kept getting easy outs from the Bay Area hitters, and his left fielder Carlin Yoder made a nice catch on the fence. But Bay Area down 20-15 going into the top of the 7th got a clutch 3 run homer from former Legendz infielder Jake Inness into the wind and a solo from Daryl Yoder to pull to within 1 run but could get no closer after pinch hits by Zach Smith and John Franklin and lost 20-19.
The semifinals and winners final were played on Red #5 with the wind blowing in for the most part starting at 5:00 PM Saturday night. Resmondo scored 12 on 4 in the top of the 2nd and 16 in the top of the 3rd to go up 29-9 on WestPoint. They were hitting 3’s and 2’s after a rash of WestPoint misplays. In the top of the 4th Resmondo went down in order after great plays by Kyle Johnson at pitcher, Kyle Fisher in the middle, and a home run robbing catch by Tyler Cowles in left field. This was a strangely kind of boring game until WestPoint came back from the dead and scored 9 in the 4th and 15 in the 5th to pull to within 38-34. But Resmondo outscored WestPoint 11-2 down the stretch, taking advantage of a strike zone that seemed to shrink on all fields as the days went by and Resmondo won 49-36. In the other semifinal Legendz scored 7 on 2 and Ataraxis 8 on 3 including a grand slam by Martel in the 1st. In the bottom of the 2nd Legendz left fielder Carlin Yoder made a great catch on a nasty knuckle ball to preserve a 12-11 lead and Nate McGray in center field made two nice plays to keep them up 19-13. In the bottom of the 5th Ataraxis’s Adam Ussery hit a no doubter 3 run homer to tie the game at 23-23 and his grand slam in the bottom of the 6th pushed them out to a 31-23 lead. In the top of the 7th a refocused Legendz team scored 11 runs, getting a 2 out no doubter homer by Kyle Slicker to put them up 32-31 and then John Schlabach homered to make it 34-31. But Ataraxis walked Legendz down in the bottom of the 7th getting 6 straight hits/walks including a walk off single by Brian Garner to win 35-34.
In the winner’s final late Saturday night Resmondo got a grand slam from Heath Barnes to pull to within 11-9 but Ataraxis scored 15 in a decisive 5th inning and played a solid game on all sides and pulled away to an impressive 38-25 win.
The loser’s bracket played out all day on a long hot Saturday. RoofX beat F1’s and Cheap Suits before Proton dropped down and beat them 29-28 on a walk off homer by Dan Herren. Then Proton beat I-57 45-35 and scored 10 in the bottom of the 7th to beat Legendz on a 2 out walk single by Joey Capparelli 43-42 to win the top half of the loser’s bracket. In the lower half of the loser’s bracket Dirty Vegas beat I-57’s ‘B’ team, Sports Reach, and Bay Area before losing to Chick-fil-a 42-33. And then WestPoint dropped down and beat Chick-fil-a 47-32 to advance to the 4th place game against Proton where they ended up forfeiting early Sunday morning. I am guessing a “faked” injury? If teams take the field and to start their last game and then get an “injury” they are allowed to keep their points even if they forfeit…sigh.
Sunday Recap
On Sunday morning in the loser’s final, Resmondo led a banged up and shorthanded Proton team 21-20 going into the top of the 6th where they scored 19 runs. Proton answered with 14 in the bottom of the 6th but trailed by 7 – 41-34 going into the bottom of the 7th where they scored 5 on their last homer by Ryan Harvey (16) and came up 2 runs short 41-39.
In the championship most expected Resmondo to force the “if” game and possibly double dip Ataraxis to take over the Conference points lead from RoofX. But Ataraxis had other ideas as their offense was bolstered by a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 4th by Jason Martel to put them up 27-25. Then in the bottom of the 5th Ataraxis hit 6 straight singles which set up a Josh Cardwell grand slam and Ataraxis never looked back in a 44-39 championship game win over Resmondo! It was Ataraxis 4th tournament win of the season and they joined the short list of ‘AA’ teams in Conference history that have won a Major tournament when all 4 Major teams were present. In the words of the great Jason Kendrick, “if a ‘AA’ team wins a tournament where all 4 Major teams are present, then they are a Major team”. 🙂
Congratulations to Ataraxis on an impressive performance after 4 days of grueling softball.
RoofX has a 36 point lead on Resmondo going into the Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio September 12-14.
Long Bomber of the Week was probably Kyle Pearson #23, Jason Martel, or Austyn Dawe.
It has been a long season, and it is at this point every year where I remind players, fans, managers, and sponsors to RESPECT the sponsors and finish out the season strong without talking publicly about 2026. And again, THANK YOU to all of the sponsors that make Conference softball possible!
We end with some great quotes from the Pocket City Dual!
Mark McCorrison – “this guy (David Chabut) looks like Hartling and Fyffe had a kid”
Joel Sanchez – “This guy has his own bat”
Joel Sanchez to Mcclanahan when Ryan got in the box to hit – “stand up”
Joel Sanchez to Collins “it’s everyone’s favorite player”
