The Golden State Major was played at the Big League Dreams park in Palm Springs. They started on Friday with 20 teams from 5 different states. In the “play in” games and the “Round of 16” there were no upsets as the 5 Conference teams and non-conferene ‘B’ teams all advanced. Then late Friday night in the “Round of 8” CutThroat/EliteSec/Soares/Coursey (CA-B) beat PURE/WICKED SPORTS 38-19. BeHappy/Proton/Standard (AZ-A) out slugged DNA/H10T / Best in the West Sports (CA-B) 44-33 as Brian Therkildsen went 7-7 and Jagger Harjo knocked in 9 RBI. Thin Air/CBB Athletics (CO-B) got by Twisted D / A3 / JAG Apparel 23-21. And the favorite to win the tournament, Bay Area Legends (Conf-TBD) run ruled Lazershow/Onyx/EliteSports/Carrillo (CA-B) 34-11 to advance to Saturday’s “Final 4”.
In the semifinals Saturday at 12:30 PM it was the top 4 teams in the tournament fighting it out. BeHappy tied with CutThroat at 14-14 going into the top of the 4th, scored 14 runs and shut down CutThroat the rest of the way to win in 5 innings 32-15 with Robert Lundy, Blake Lively, and William Marable all on base every time they batted. And in the other semifinal Thin Air upset Bay Area Legends 23-18. Bay Area then dropped to the loser’s bracket and without leaving the field the rest of the day, beat DTS 40-13, CutThroat 26-9, Thin Air 29-10, and “double dipped” BeHappy 26-25 and 31-28 to win the tournament. In that first game of the championship Bay Area held BeHappy scoreless in the top of the 7th and won on a walk off homer by Zack Smith as Isaac Gonzalez, Misael Tavarez, Jared Hunt, and Cooper Thorpe all went 4-4. In the “if” game Bay Area as the visiting team led the entire game holding off BeHappy by 3 runs when BeHappy had 2 home runs left in the bottom of the 7th. In that one John Franklin, Isaac Gonzalez, Misael Tavarez, and Chente Granados were all on base 5 times each. It was Bay Area’s first tournament win of the season and the 7th different winning team in 7 conference events so far in 2025!
