WestPoint’s John Radich hits in the Championship vs Dirty Vegas
The Crown Town Classic began on Saturday morning at 8 AM on the all turf fields at the Mid-America Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kansas with 18 men’s teams including 6 teams from the Conference USSSA. There were no upsets in the “Round of 16” as all 6 Conference teams advanced and the SwingCoast 40’s/Spartan Bat Co. (MO-A), with a number of ex-Conference players, beat T’s 13 (NE-B) 14-13. In the top half of the winner’s bracket SwingCoast would go on to upset Dirty Vegas 30-26 and then beat the Q/Nex/MRE (KS-B) team 14-9 to advance to the winner’s bracket finals. In the bottom half of the bracket the favorite (and only ‘AA’ team) WestPoint (IN-AA) scored 11 in the 1st and 10 in the 2nd to beat MoKan HIVE 31-9. Filip Washington, Kyle Fisher, Kyler Kirkland, and Roger Fields were all perfect on base in the game. Then in the quarterfinals against R1/Our Fam/Louisville Slugger, WestPoint trailing 18-6 at one point, scored 12 in the 5th and 14 in the top of the 7th to win 39-27. Greg Popatak and Joey Kampfer were each 6-6 and Kampfer drove in 9 runs. In the semifinals WestPoint leading just 16-14 over the I-57 ‘B’ team going into the bottom of the 6th, scored 13 runs on 6 homers to leave them on the field 29-14. Popatak was again 5-5. The winner’s bracket final was played early Saturday evening and WestPoint after trailing early 5-4 to the SwingCoast40’s team, scored 10 in the bottom of the 2nd and 8 in the bottom of the 3rd and held SwingCoast scoreless in the top of the 3rd and 4th innings to win 23-5. Filip Washington at leadoff was 4-4 as was Ryan Ramirez and Ramirez hit 3 HR and had 6 RBI. In the loser’s bracket Dirty Vegas ran through everyone including a 27-8 win over Q/NEX who finished 4th, and SwingCoast 39-32 who finished 3rd. So it was a tired Dirty Vegas team playing WestPoint in the championship which directors decided to finish on Saturday night since games were running ahead of schedule. In this one Dirty Vegas went up 5-4 in the 1st inning and then it was all WestPoint as they scored 20 in the bottom of the 2nd and 13 in the bottom of the 3rd to leave Dirty Vegas on the field 37-5. MVP Filip Washington was 5-5, John Radich was 5-5 with 3 HR and 10 RBI, and Ryan Ramirez, Tyler Cowles, and Kevin Johnson were all perfect on base in the championship game. It was WestPoint’s 2nd tournament win of the season as the Conference gets ready to travel to the 57th Annual Smoky Mountain Classic which starts this Friday morning.
