Friday Night Recap
The Chattahoochee Major is under way. Reach’s Scott Hartling helps them score 22 runs in 1 inning, but they end up losing to Primetime.
The annual Chattahoochee Major was played last Friday and Saturday at the South Commons Park in Columbus, Georgia. They played on 300 foot fields with the Dudley Pro-M ball in hot and humid conditions. There were 12 teams from 9 different states and 11 of them were from the Conference USSSA. Friday the 4 “play in” games began at 5 PM. Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S (FL-Major) run ruled SNI/LOB/DEMARINI (FL-A) 43-18. Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) trailing Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) 33-23 in the stadium after Reach put up a 22 run bottom of the 2nd, came from behind when Reach couldn’t score without home runs and Primetime pulled off a 42-39 victory out scoring Reach 6-1 in the 7th inning. Sean Ulmer and Edmund Cheatham were each 6-6 in the win as both teams hit all 14 of their allowed home runs. Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren/BAF (VA-AA), last week’s Maryland Major winner, scored 10 in the top of the 2nd and 16 in the top of the 4th to win 36-2 in 4 innings over GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andrews a non-conference Alabama ‘B’ team. Travis Tucker, Greg Downing, and Kade Christensen were all perfect on base in the game. And Juno Athletics/LSR (NJ-Major) held on to beat F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar (TX-TBD) 31-27 after F1’s scored 16 runs in the top of the 5th to take a 24-23 lead. Both teams used all 14 HR in the first 5 innings.
Filip Washington may have hit the hardest middle shot of the year but Mason Farmer somehow caught it!
Also Friday night they played the quarterfinals which were delayed for 1.5 hours by a thunder and lightning storm. Resmondo and Proton/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) were locked in a relatively low scoring game over on field #6 as both teams took some rough swings trying to keep the ball in the park. South Commons traditionally plays very “short”. Resmondo grabbed a 9-8 lead in the top of the 2nd on a towering 3 run homer by Bradley Jones but the score was tied 13-13 after 3 complete innings. In the top of the 4th Proton 1st baseman Jeff Roxby made plays on two Resmondo hot shot grounders and right fielder Tyler Storey made a sliding catch to hold Resmondo to zero. But in the bottom of the 4th Resmondo turned a 6-10-3 double play to hold Proton down. In the top of the 5th Proton shortstop Tyler Dickens dropped the ball throwing it to 2nd on a force play and that led to 12 Resmondo runs as Resmondo went up 25-14. But Proton, who was considered the best 300 foot team in the nation coming into the tournament, fought back in the bottom of the 5th getting 5 straight base hits, then a walk, then a homer to start the inning and they scored 14 runs to take a 28-25 lead. In the 6th both teams used the last of their 16 homers and Resmondo led 32-31 as the game was delayed by that 1.5 hour thunderstorm. In the 7th when they resumed Proton relief pitcher Andrew Vitcak got Resmondo to go down in order 1-2-3 when Anthony Acevedo at 2nd base and defensive sub Jordan Jarrell in left field made nice defensive plays, and all Proton needed in the bottom of the 7th was 1 to tie and 2 to win. In the bottom of the 7th with no homers left Chad Erickson grounded out, Tyler Dickens doubled down the left field line, Joey Capparelli singled, and pitcher Andrew Vitcak flew out to left center field. With runners on 2nd and 3rd Resmondo pitched around Dan Herren and walked him to load the bases for Brandon Streets. Streets hit a nice curving line drive down the right field line but it never came down and went over the fence just inside the foul pole for the third out. Resmondo had hung on to win 32-31. Bubba Mack, Greg Connell, and Kyle Pearson OG in the middle of the Resmondo lineup were a combined 15-15 in the game. I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA (IL-AA) made quick work of PrimeTime scoring 19 runs in the bottom of the 1st and cruising to a 32-11 win in 4 innings. Laser Dave Johnson was 5-5, Nic Perkins 4-4, Orlando Olivera 4-4 with 7 RBI, and Adam Harrington 4-4 in the win. RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure (IN-Major) scored 17 in the bottom of the 3rd and separated from Chick-fil-a in the bottom of the 6th when they scored 12 runs to win 49-38. And in the final game of the night Westpoint (IN-AA) the #1 seed playing in the stadium scored 5 on 1 to Juno Athletics 3 on 1 in the 1st inning. Westpoint added 2 on 2 in the top of the 2nd and 12 runs in the top of the 3rd. In the bottom of the 3rd Juno answered with 12 runs of their own to go up 22-19 with the two teams even on home runs at 9 out of 14. In the bottom of the 4th, Juno after making 2 outs to start the inning, rallied to score 13 runs with the big blow being a Bishop Harris grand slam and Juno was up 35-24. In the top of the 5th Juno pitcher Mason Farmer snapped off a Filip Washington middle shot that may have been the highest speed middle shot of the year. He caught it in self-defense! Then Bishop Harris in the middle made a diving stop and throw to first where Donnie Walsh did a slap tag and Juno went on to win 47-32.
Brandon Streets game winning bid, went just over the fence for a DBO/HRO and a loss.
Final 4 Recap
Tyler Marshburn makes another great play in the semifinals.
On Saturday morning at 9:45 AM the semifinals began in the stadium. I-57 got a grand slam from Orlando Olivera in the bottom of the 1st and Resmondo answered with a “Long Bomber of the Week” grand slam by Everett Williams in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd I-57 grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and the game was tied at 18-18. In the top of the 4th the I-57 defense shut down Resmondo as middle infielder Marcus Yoder made two nice plays to start the inning and Mike Nino at 3rd base a nice play to end the inning. In the bottom of the 4th Adam Harrington tied the game at 20-20 with a 2 run homer and Jake Hathaway gave them the lead 22-20 on a homer of his own. In the top of the 5th Resmondo put up a zero as Marcus Yoder again made a nice sliding backhand for an out and I-57 came into the bottom of the 5th and scored 14 runs to leave Resmondo on the field 36-20. Jake Hathaway and Nic Perkins were 5-5 in the win and Marcus Yoder was 4-4 with 2 HR and 7 RBI.
Mike Nino hits a walk off run rule homer to cap a 14 run inning for I-57.
Juno just couldn’t get hits against RoofX.
In the 2nd semifinal RoofX had a perfect inning in the 1st as they put up 9 runs on 3 homers in the top half of the inning and shut down Juno 1-2-3 in the bottom half. From there RoofX increased their lead to 21-1 in the top of the 3rd and 31-2 in the top of the 4th and they won by the 20 run rule 36-2! Chris Anninos was 5-5 and Kyle Center and Brandon Yoder were each 4-4 in the win as they out homered Juno 16-2.
Winner’s Final Recap
This diving stop by Dave Johnson at 2B for I-57 led to a double play. We call them “diver DP’s”
The winner’s bracket final was played in heat and humidity in the midafternoon in the stadium. RoofX got a grand slam from Terry Lambright in the bottom of the 2nd to close the I-57 lead to 12-10 with RoofX having a 6-2 advantage on home runs. Then RoofX blanked I-57 in the top of the 3rd but a two out rally by I-57 in the top of the 4th led to a 19 run inning capped by a Laser Dave Johnson 3 run homer and a 32-11 lead. In the bottom of the 4th RoofX actually needed 2 runs to keep the game from being a run rule but instead of using solo home runs, they came out and placed 4 straight base hits to extend the game and ended up with 12 runs in the inning to make it 32-23. In the top of the 4th I-57 hit the last of their 14 home runs to go up 37-23 and in the bottom of the 5th they held down RoofX on a diver by 2nd baseman Dave Johnson that led to an impressive double play turn by Marcus Yoder. But a bad hop up the middle which would have been out number 3 led to 9 more runs by RoofX and they closed the I-57 lead to 37-35. In the top of the 7th backup pitcher Austyn Dawe turned a 1-10-3 double play to shut out I-57 and RoofX won the game in the bottom of the 7th on a walk off homer by Logan Rogers 29-28. Jeremy Fry was 6-6 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Austyn Dawe was 5-6 and hit for the cycle. And Terry Lambright was 6-6 with 3 HR and 9 RBI in the win.
Logan Rogers walks off I-57 in the bottom of the 7th.
Loser’s Bracket Recap
Chick-fil-a’s Jacob Clifton hits a walk off homer in the bottom of the 8th to beat SNI, Saturday morning.
The loser’s bracket played out all day long on Saturday. Proton who lost that heart breaker to Resmondo Friday night, beat GOE 43-36, F1’s 38-37, and Juno Athletics 31-16 to make it to the 4th place game early Saturday evening. In the bottom half of the loser’s bracket Westpoint knocked off fellow ‘AA’ teams Sports Reach 35-27 and Chick-fil-a 37-32 before Resmondo dropped down and sent them home 38-15.
Resmondo’s Phil Matte pinch hit and hit 2 home runs in their comeback vs Proton.
In the 4th place game Resmondo down 17-5 to Proton climbed back in the game scoring 7 on 3 in the bottom of the 4th and 15 runs in the 5th on 2 Phil Matte homers in the inning to go up 27-20. But Proton made it close and trailed just 31-28 going into the top of the 7th with 4 HR to hit. But Proton inexplicably used all 4 home runs as solo homers to go up 32-31 and Resmondo who had two homers left tied it on a Heath Barnes homer and won it on a Kyle Pearson homer to advance to the loser’s final.
Resmondo knocks out Mitch Carriger in the loser’s final.
In the loser’s final I-57 played their hearts out for 3 innings leading Resmondo 26-3 with the highlight being a Nic Perkins grand slam in the top of the 2nd and some great defense by Marcus Yoder in the middle and Jake Hathaway at 3rd base. But in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings I-57 couldn’t finish and they grounded into a double play in each inning. Then as Resmondo was making their comeback, they hit pitcher Mitch Carriger twice and knocked him out of the game. The backup pitcher walked 5 Resmondo batters and the defense made 3 misplays/errors which led to a grand slam and suddenly Resmondo had scored 8 in the bottom of the 5th and 17 in the bottom of the 6th to go up 36-32. In the top of the 7th it felt like I-57 couldn’t decide whether to try to win the game or retaliate against the Resmondo pitcher with middle shots and they wound up not doing either in a 36-34 loss. Kyle Pearson and Jeremy Yates were each 5-6 in the win. Sean Keeney had 8 RBI in the loss.
Championship Recap
Tyler Marshburn hits against Kyle Center in the championship.
In the championship under the lights Saturday night, Resmondo scored 9 on 4 homers in the top of the 1st but would have had a lot more if not for sliding catches by RoofX center fielder Brandon Yoder and left fielder Arlis Miller. In the bottom of the 1st RoofX answered scoring 13 runs on 6 home runs and in the top of the 2nd RoofX middleman Jeremy Fry turned a double play. From there neither team could really put up a big inning, the defense was solid with both pitchers stabbing line drives up the middle, and the two teams entered the 7th inning with Resmondo down 29-25 with 2 home runs to hit. But Yates led off with a solo homer, Clark grounded into a double play, and Everett Williams hit a solo to bring it to within one run. Mack singled and Connell grounded out for the 3rd out and RoofX avoided the “if” game, won 29-28, and picked up their 3rd tournament win of the season.
Arlis Miller hits a laser in the championship.
Long Bomber of the Week!
Everett Williams from Resmondo is the Long Bomber of the Week as he hit this grand slam over the light pole and the trees!

Defensive MVP – RoofX pitcher Patrick Center
Offensive MVP – Resmondo pitcher Travis Clark
Team by Team Notes
1st Place – RoofX/Thunder/BD/CE/Chosen/RF/Pure
IN-Major Record 4-0
RoofX still playing without Tyler Ervine (foot) won their 2nd tournament in a row, 3rd of the year, and first on 300 foot fields where they dominated in 2024. When the points shake out after the Seattle dual next week, RoofX should be in the lead. They are playing all facets of the game well. Pitching, defense, line drive hitting, home run management, and they seem to have great chemistry with different players stepping up when needed. It is possible they put it all on display in Seattle next week where the first tournament is on 300 foot fields, and the 2nd tournament the winner’s bracket is played on the baseball field with unlimited home runs. Their stats are being redone as a new scorekeeper struggled with the app but Chris Anninos, Kyle Center, Jeremy Fry, and Brandon Yoder were all over .800 on base I believe. Logan Rogers led in HR and Austyn Dawe in RBI.
Kyle Miller always stays ready. 2 pinch hits in this one inning.
2nd Place – Resmondo-SIS-Skoni-StubTerm-RDD-S&S
FL-Major Record 5-2
Resmondo showed a lot of heart coming back and just about all of their games were decided by the 7th inning. Phil Matte was only available to pinch hit, which he did well 3-3. Jason Matusik is still out with the knee. Jeremy Yates left the championship game limping off from right field. The team struggled defensively early in games but made plays down the stretch for the most part led by SS Tyler Marshburn and pitcher Travis Clark. Offensively they have not been able to step on the gas whenever they want like last year and struggle to hit singles. Clark was .818. Jones, Williams, and Marshburn hit 10 HR each. And Jones led the team with 28 RBI. After the tournament they picked up Steele Lewis from Sports Reach.
Mack 3B, Marshburn SS, Barnes MI, Bazat 2B, Williams RF.
3rd Place – I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS/SA
IL-AA Record 2-2
I-57 is the top finishing ‘AA’ team again. They played without Zane Migues who should be back for their next tournament. They only lost to Major teams RoofX and Resmondo in the last inning and beat Resmondo in the semifinals for their first win over them on 300 foot fields. Mitch Carriger was like a prize fighter getting up off the dirt every time Resmondo drilled him, except that last blow where the small crowd and I am sure the viewers at home were thinking “stay down”. Mitch played great though and nearly beat RoofX in the winner’s final and Resmondo again in the loser’s final. Orlando Olivera was .905, Laser Dave .826, and Jake Hathaway .818. Hathaway led in HR with 9 and Olivera led in RBI with 22. At times I-57 played great defense but came up a play short in those two key losses.
Marcus Yoder tries to make another great play.
4th Place – Proton/Str8play/Rebel
CA-Major Record 3-2
Proton came in as the best team on 300 foot fields. But they came up a run short against Resmondo Friday night then had to fight through the loser’s bracket only to lose to Resmondo again after leading by 20 runs and mis using their home runs in the top of the 7th. Ryan Harvey was over .800 with 14 HR and Streets led in RBI with 28. Jordan Jarrell and Andrew Vitcak were also .800.
Proton may have been this close to beating Resmondo on Friday night.
Ryan Honeycutt has been a nice addition for Proton.
More Teams
Juno tied for 5th after struggling past F1’s, beating Westpoint, not showing up against RoofX, and losing by 15 to Proton. They played without center fielder Mitch Lendenski.
Westpoint lost to Juno on Friday night and then beat Sports Reach and Chick-fil-a before losing to Resmondo to finish tied for 5th. A solid performance overall.
F1’s played two solid games against Major teams in which they lost and they beat Primetime.
Primetime had a nice comeback win over Sports Reach but then dropped two straight on their home fields.
SNI played well but went 0-2 which is why these smaller conference events need to be dual compass bracket tournaments where all teams get 6 games (3 in each tournament).
Sports Reach went 0-2 and their results don’t match their talent this year. They released Steele Lewis to go to Resmondo.
