Tuesday Recap
Wichita Bonding takes on Moneyball early Tuesday.
The men’s ‘B’ World began at 8 am on Tuesday, October 30th in the Red and White quads at the Space Coast Stadium Complex in Viera, Florida. They decided this year to use the temp fences set at 300 feet, the Dudley Pro-M ball, with an 8 home run limit, and the wind blew out on 3 of the 4 fields that they used for the event. This ball and field combination made for some very poor softball and was worst ‘B’ Worlds that I have been to, and I’ve been to every ‘B’ World since 2007. There were teams using their 8 allotted home runs in the 2nd inning. Players punching at the ball to keep it in the yard were accidentally hitting home runs. And one pitcher they told me who hadn’t hit a home run all year hit one over the 325 foot fence in center field for a DBO (Dead ball out) because his team was out of homers, and it was the 3rd inning! The teams that adjusted and persevered in the winds, both pitching, hitting, and home run conservation, were the ones that advanced. There were 26 teams from 15 states in the double elimination tournament.
Macha robs a homer for I-57
To make it to the 3 PM afternoon quarterfinal games Tuesday, MoneyBall/GameOver/PrimeApparel (TX-B) beat Florida’s best Top Shelf/Goodtimes/Hype 33-30 and then Seattle’s best GTL/Legacy/Dirty (WA) 32-23 after jumping out to a 12-3 lead in the 1st inning. Wichita Bonding/ Warkins Agency Inc (OK) knocked off Colorado’s Stars 37-21 then the #3 seed F1s/DS/Proton/Prime/Trillstar from Texas 43-15. Charm Builder/Mast Grp/Wooster Concrete from Ohio beat J&I/Westcoast/HellsCanyonSports (WA-B) 31-26 and Comatose / S2N / Subway (WI) 24-13. CutThroat/EliteSec/Soares/Coursey the #2 seed from California after getting a bye beat Smoke/TopNotch/CompleteAutoGlass (CO-B) 28-19. Upset minded D2/Brush Masters (UT-B) knocked off Top Shelf/Icon/BC Apparel (CO-B) 24-23 and then upset #1 seeded Fishers/StoltzfusWelding/All Hustle (PA-B) 28-19. Chick-fil-A / BAF Sports (VA-B) beat two Alabama teams GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andrews (AL-B) 36-25 and Kut4Sports/Anchor Roofing (AL-B) 28-13. Twisted D / A3 / JAG Apparel (OR-B) the #5 seed after a bye beat DNA/H10T / Best in the West Sports (CA-B) 37-24. And the #4 seed I-57 Roofing / I-55 Logistics (MO-B) beat a good AUIT/Demieri Properties Inc/BD (NY-B) 36-8 to be the final team to make it to the “Round of 8”. I-57/I-55 scored 16 in the top of the 3rd and 15 in the top of the 4th to win by the 20 run rule. Wesley Thompson, Jake Dobbelare, Zac Perkins, and Tanner Hudsonn were all on base 5-5 or 4-4 in the win.
In the 1st quarterfinal Moneyball and Wichita Bonding were playing a game of home run management with the wind continuing to blow hard out. Moneyball’s center fielder Chris Roberts hit a grand slam to go up 8-4 in the bottom of the 1st, Wichita Bonding hit way too many solo home runs early on, and Roberts hit another grand slam – this time in the rain in the bottom of the 2nd and Moneyball advanced 27-22. I-57/I55 went up 20-5 on Twisted D in the bottom of the 3rd using up all of their home runs including a grand slam. Twisted D used up their home runs in the top of the 4th, I57/I55 hit 3 DBO’s in the bottom of the 4th, and neither team could score the rest of the game as I57/I55 advanced 22-15. Zac Perkins was 4-4 in the win. Chick-fil-a went up 10-6 against D2 in the 1st inning hitting a bunch of doubles. D2 answered with a grand slam and a 13 run bottom of the 3rd to go up 22-15. CFA base hit their way to a 23-22 lead in the top of the 4th to go up 23-22 and lost the lead on D2’s last home run in the bottom of the 4th. Neither team could score once the home runs were gone as DBO/HRO went over the fence time after time and D2 managed to pull out a 25-23 win. In one of the best games of the tournament over on Red Wilson which was the only field that the wind wasn’t gusting out on, it was Charm Builders taking on CutThroatSports who was now the favorite to win the tournament with Fisher’s having lost early on. The wind was blowing in from right field at 15 mph. Charm Builders made some great defensive plays in the game but ran themselves out of an inning early on but powered their way to a 7-0 lead. After a slow start CutThroatSports pitcher Kyle Harmon hit two – 3 run homers and big lefty Joe Lewis was hitting home runs into the teeth of the wind to bring CutThroat back. The late innings witnessed clutch hits and home runs from both teams as Jon Troyer (who used to play with RoofX) hit a 2 out 3 run homer to put Charm up 21-15 in the top of the 6th, Torres hit a 2 out 3 run homer for CutThroat in the bottom of the 6th to pull to within 21-19, and both teams had 1 home run out of their 8 left to start the 7th inning. In the top of the 7th the Charm pitcher Yutzy hit a clutch 3 run homer to put them up 24-19 and in the bottom of the inning CutThroat’s Joe Lewis hit another laser homer but CutThroat fell short 25-23. The two highest seeded teams, CutThroat and Fisher’s, were now deep in the loser’s bracket!
Final 4 Recap
Eric Soto hit for Moneyball whether the wind was blowing in or out.
The semifinals were played the next day (Wednesday) in the White quad at 11:30 am. On White Marucci with the wind blowing in towards the 1st base dugout at 15 mph it was Charm Builder’s and Moneyball. Moneyball adjusted to the tough wind conditions early going up 8-1 on a homer by veteran Mike Martinez and no doubter homers by the pitcher Eric Soto and big Nic Perez. Moneyball added a string of doubles to score in the 4th and it looked like they finished off Charm Builder’s in the 5th when Soto and Jordan Harrison homered to make it 19-8. But Charm Builder’s dug deep and made a valiant comeback in the 7th and had the winning run at the plate when they lost 19-17. In the other semifinal with the wind blowing out to right field, it was all I-57/I55 beating D2/Brush Masters 20-5, leaving D2 on the field in a 6 run bottom of the 5th. I57/I55 out homered D2 7-2 as catcher Jack Quick went 4-4 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in the win.
Charm played some good defense.

In that game at 5 PM Wednesday Sal-8’s Chris Russell hit 3 home runs and Cory Matherly hit 2 HR but Sal-8 ran out of gas as I-57/I55 scored at least 2 runs in every inning and slowly pulled away to a 23-8 five inning run rule victory leaving Sal-8 on the field with a Zac Perkins 3 run homer. Zach Macha, Connor Quick, and Zac Perkins were each 4-4 and Ian Heizer 3-3 in the win.
