Sunday Recap

Sports Reach ended up winning by 1 over SNI.

The 2025 ‘AA’ Worlds began at 1 PM Sunday afternoon October 5th at the Viera, Florida Space Coast complex with a good field of 14 teams from 13 different states. There were 5 ‘AA’ teams, 7 class ‘A’, and 1 class ‘B’ team. The weather started off nice but windy, they used the Dudley Hardcore Ball on 325 foot fences, and they used a 14 home run limit. Solid winds affected the games depending upon which direction home plate faced and there was a long weather delay on Sunday and Monday as well.

Proaxion center fielder robs a homer vs Bay Area.

The 6 “play in” games began at 1:00 and 2:30 PM. They flipped a coin for home team and in the 1st game SNI/LOB/DEMARINI the Florida ‘A’ team was home against Reach/Demarini/Worshams/RedAthlete (KY-AA) on the White Rawlings field. With the hardcore ball (which is a senior ball) in play the scoring came in bunches and Sports Reach jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the top of the 3rd on a Jason Magnum into the wind in left 2 run triple. Some good early defense by Sports Reach also kept SNI’s offense in check. Sports Reach got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 4th and infielder Josh Fyffe turned a wild leaping double play with Joel Sanchez in the bottom of the 5th to remain in the lead 18-14 (6-3 HR). In the top of the 6th Sports Reach had a 1 out flyout and were then thrown out at the plate to end the inning. In the bottom of the 6th a pesky SNI team finally got the lead on a Tommy Melton line paint shot and a Mike Smith 3 run homer to go up 20-18. In the 7th Sports Reach refocused and got solo homers from Jordan Robinson and Jason Branch before Scott Hartling walked and Josh Fyffe hit an into the wind homer take a 22-21. In the bottom of the 7th SNI needing just 1 run to tie, got a leadoff walk, a foul out, a fly ball that was just 5 feet short of the 325 foot fence, and pitcher Justin Ogletree got a strikeout looking to end the game. Sports Reach had “survived and advanced.” They out homered SNI 9-4 as Jason Branch, Josh Fyffe, and Jason Magnum all went 4-5 and Branch hit 3 home runs. Back on Red Marucci two ‘A’ teams went at it, Cheap Suits /REPUBLIC REALTY (CA-A) and Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A). Cheap Suits scored 11 on 4 HR’s to grab a 23-12 lead but Primetime scored 7 in the bottom of the 6th and 7 more in the bottom of the 7th including 3 straight home runs by Franky Fisk, James Scott, and Angel Ortega to walk off Cheap Suits 26-25. Cheap Suits actually out homered Primetime 12-10 but Ira Brown and James Scott went 5-5 for Primetime and Sir Francis Fisk was 4-5 with 3 HR and 10 RBI in the win. The hardcore ball does make for some dramatic games as the last team that gets to hit it usually makes it close or wins the game. On White Marucci it was DIRTY VEGAS/BDC/ARK CONCEPTS (TX-A) and Chick-fil-A/Shore OL/LS/Skyren (VA-AA). In the top of the first Chick-fil-a defensive misplays led to 7 Dirty Vegas runs. In the bottom of the 1st DV returned the favor by walking too many CFA hitters and 2 out extra base hits led to 6 runs. CFA’s Trey Porter hit a 3 run homer in the 2nd and DV’s Ben Dunn matched it with a 3 run homer of his own in the 3rd. CFA scored in every inning at least 2 runs and DV put up a zero in the 4th and 5th. In the top of the 6th CFA outfielder Justin Lutheran trying to rob a homer actually knocked the ball over the fence, the CFA defense continued to struggle, and DV power hitter Zach Goleniak hit a 3 run homer to put them up 21-18. But in the bottom of the 7th down 21-20 CFA got a single by William Scott and a walk off homer from Travis Tucker to win the game 22-21. As Tucker hit the ball he called “game” as he knew it was gone! CFA out homered DV 9-4 in the game as Greg Downing and Kade Christensen each went 4-4. At 2:30 PM back on Red Marucci it was two ‘A’ teams BeHappy/Proton/Standard (AZ-AA) and Legendz/Beloli/MSGA Sports (OK-A) battling to a 20-20 tie after 6 innings and they were also tied on home runs at 7. In the top of the 7th BeHappy after a leadoff double, had 2 flyouts and a foul out and did not score. In the bottom of the 7th Legendz walked them off as the first batter Jason Fry homered to win it 22-21. Legendz was led by Gary Levesque who went 5-5 in the victory. On White Marucci field it was one of the favorites I-57 Roofing/AXE/SHIRTSandLOGOS (IL-AA) leading GOE/StrokeoMagic/Turnipseed/Andr (AL-B) 4-0 early as both teams struggled to score with the wind blowing in. I-57 “figured it out” in the 4th and 5th scoring 4 and then 9 runs to run rule GOE 17-1 out homering them 6-1. In the final “play in” game on White Rawlings Team Proaxion (Canada-A) out homered Bay Area Legends (CA-A) early on 4-1 and got a spectacular home run robbing catch by their center fielder in the bottom of the 3rd. It was a low scoring game because the wind was now blowing straight in. But Proaxion got a 2 run double in the top of the 4th to go up 6-1, Shawn Proulx hit another 2 run homer in the 5th to go up 8-1 and Proaxion cruised to a 19-3 win.

Legendz gives Ataraxis all they can handle in the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals Sunday started in the stadium with Chick-fil-a taking on Westpoint who had gotten a bye with their #2 seed. The theme of the game was WestPoint outfielder Tyler Cowles who made a nice catch on the fence to end the 1st inning, robbed a homer in the top of the 2nd, and he hit multi run home runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings as Westpoint run ruled Chick-fil-a in 4.5 innings 24-9. Cowles and Joey Kampfer were each 4-4 as Westpoint out homered CFA 11-3. Back on White Marucci I-57 Roofing led Primetime 22-5 until Primetime climbed back into the game with an 11 run bottom of the 6th. But I-57 scored 9 on 3 home runs in the top of the 7th to go up 31-16 and shut out Primetime in the bottom of the 7th. Jordan Spaulding was 5-6 in the win and Marcus Yoder hit 3 home runs. Yoder also made some great plays in the infield and remember Primetime was playing without their normal pitcher Rod Armour (torn bicep). On White Rawlings field it was Sports Reach leading Team Proaxion 12-11 after 5 complete innings. Both teams put up zero’s in the 6th and then Sports Reach went for 10 runs 3 homers in the top of the 7th and held Proaxion scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to win 22-11. Jason Branch, Jason Magnum (4 walks), and Joel Sanchez were each on base 4-5 in the win as they out homered Proaxion 8-1. The best game of the quarterfinals was Legendz fresh off their ‘A’ World Championship and walk off win to start the ‘AA’, in the stadium against #1 seeded ATARAXIS/SONNYS/JBLNEWBREEDKOVALBAF (MD-AA) who had received a bye in the 1st round. The wind blew in at 15 mph but Legendz scored 7 on 3 home runs in the top of the 1st on Matt Mosel, Zach Sterry, and Nate McGray home runs and they shut out Ataraxis in the bottom of the 1st. In the bottom of the 2nd Ataraxis scored 6 with 2 outs on home runs by Cabot Van Til and Brock Frentzel. In the bottom of the 3rd Ataraxis continued to free up with 3 solo home runs then a 2 out 3 run homer by Adam Ussery to go up 11-10. All 11 Ataraxis runs to this point in the game were with 2 outs. In the top of the 4th after a go ahead 2 run homer by Gary Levesque, Legendz ran themselves out of the inning getting thrown out at home plate. In the top of the 5th Legendz powered their way to a 18-12 lead and in the bottom of the 5th for Ataraxis Quincy Latimore hit a 3 run backside homer to cut the lead to 3. Going to the top of the 7th, Legendz led 19-16 and it was 9-8 on home runs. Ataraxis third baseman Josh Cardwell made the diving stop of the tournament towards the line and threw to 2nd for the out and Ataraxis came up in the bottom of the 7th down 3 with 6 to hit and walked Legendz down for a 20-19 win!

Final 4 Recap

I-57 scores in the rain Sunday night vs Westpoint in the semifinals.

In the semifinals Sunday night I-57 drew a number of walks in the 1st inning leading to 2 and 3 run homers. Then in the top of the 2nd a hard rain helped cause 3 Westpoint errors and I-57 scored 14 runs to go up 21-9. After a rain/lightning delay in the 3rd inning, Westpoint did not come back with good energy or focus and I-57 slipped away to a 34-19 run rule victory after 5 innings. The top of the I-57 lineup was 21-30 with 7 HR and 25 RBI as they out homered Westpoint 13-10.

In the 2nd semifinal Ataraxis tried to hold down Sports Reach early on a great diving catch by center fielder Josh Kirsten in the bottom of the 1st and a nice running catch by left fielder Quincy Latimore in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd Latimore hit a grand slam to put Ataraxis up 24-16. In the 4th the Sports Reach defense made some nice plays with pitcher Justin Ogletree and infielder Josh Fyffe. In the top of the 5th Ataraxis put up 9 more runs using the last of their 14 home runs to go up 33-18. In the bottom of the 5th needing a run to extend the game, Sports Reach got an inside the park homer from Casey Scoggins and the game continued. Sports Reach made an error on the base baths and quite honestly made a number of game losing type plays in this game. But the Ataraxis offense seemed to give up after hitting that last home run and only scored 1 run the rest of the game and Sports Reach went into the bottom of the 7th down 7 (34-27) with 1 to hit. They got a walk, reached on error, flyout, and a David Chabut 3 run homer (their last) to make it 34-30. Then with one out they got a triple, double, double, reached on error, single off the glove, walk, and a walk to tie the game, before Joel Sanchez got a walk off single to pull off the miracle comeback win 35-34! Scott Hartling and Dagmar Pena each reached base safely 5 times in the game and Josh Fyffe had 7 RBI in the win.

Joel Sanchez hits the walk off single to win the semifinals against Ataraxis.

Winner’s Final Recap

Kendall Welborn goes 5-5 for Sports Reach in the winner’s final.

The winner’s bracket finals on Monday at 11:30 am had a 4 hour rain/storm delay to start the game. It was still drizzling when they began play. Sports Reach brought some good defense with Pena at third base and Sanchez at shortstop fielding key hard shots early in the game but Sports Reach was hitting into too many double plays and getting rung up looking to end innings. The difference though was the Sports Reach offense as they got a grand slam from Jordan Robinson in the top of the 3rd to go up 13-9 and then they freed up in the top of the 5th scoring 16 runs on 8 home runs taking advantage of some I-57 throwing errors to go up 30-10. I-57 did enough to avoid the run rule but Sports Reach won the game on some good pitching by Ogletree and a better overall defensive performance 35-24. Scott Hartling was 5-6 with 3 HR, Kendall Welborn was 5-5, and David Chabut was 5-5 with 4 HR and 8 RBI in the win.

Loser’s Bracket

I-57 center fielder Adam Harrington robs a home run in the loser’s final.

In the top part of the loser’s bracket BeHappy won 2 games including sending home ‘AA’ team Chick-fil-a 28-27 before Ataraxis dropped down and beat them 46-43. In the lower part of the loser’s bracket Cheap Suits won 2 games before Dirty Vegas sent them home 22-21 and then Westpoint dropped down and Dirty Vegas upset them 30-22. So ‘AA’ teams Chick-fil-a and Westpoint finished tied for 5th. In the 4th place game Ataraxis had to score 4 in the bottom of the 7th to beat Dirty Vegas on a laser line drive 2 out 2 run homer by Jason Martel 27-26. So Dirty Vegas finished 4th. In the loser’s bracket finals Ataraxis walked 19 batters and I-57 center fielder Adam Harrington hit two grand slams, made a diving catch, and robbed a home run to push I-57 to a 40-21 run rule win.

Ataraxis hitter Jason Martel hits a walk off homer to beat Dirty Vegas.

Championship Recap

I-57’s Nic Perkins drove in 7 runs in the Championship game.

In the first championship game I-57 scored 3 runs on no homers to start the top of the 1st and Sports Reach got a 3 run homer from Justin Ogletree off the batter’s eye and went up 7-3. I-57 had some nice defense by 1st baseman Zac Perkins early in the game and then he hit a 3 run homer in the top of the 3rd. Sports Reach did not score in the 3rd or 4th innings. Meanwhile the I-57 offense was more consistent throughout the game getting grand slams from Marcus Yoder and “Laser” Dave Johnson while Sports Reach left the bases loaded and I-57 ended up forcing the “if” necessary game with a 31-16 win scoring 10 runs in the top of the 7th. They out homered Sports Reach 11-8 as Marcus Yoder went 5-5 with 2 HR, 5 RBI, and 4 runs scored while hitting last in the lineup.

Sports Reach’s Casey Scoggins hits a 3 run homer in the “If” game.

The “if” game was played late Monday night as two tired teams battled it out for the title. Sports Reach was the visitors and went up 24-15 using 10 home runs through 3 innings as the wind blew at 14 mph to the right field corner. Sports Reach also got out of a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 4th up 25-16. In the top of the 5th Casey Scoggins hit a 3 run homer for Sports Reach putting them up 33-16 as they scored 8 runs with 2 outs. In the bottom of the 5th needing to score 3 with 2 out and nobody on base to extend the game, I-57 got a Nic Perkins homer, David Yoder walked, and Adam Harrington hit a 2 run homer to avoid the run rule. They extended the game again in the bottom of the 6th on a bases loaded walk, but were only able to score 2 runs, needing 18, in the bottom of the 7th and Sports Reach had won the ‘AA’ Worlds 38-22 out homering I-57 14-9. Scott Hartling and Jason Magnum were 5-6 in the “if” game and Joel Sanchez was 6-6. Sports Reach won the ‘AA’ after winning that first game of the tournament vs SNI on a bases loaded walk off strikeout looking. What a run!

Long Bomber of the ‘AA’ is Justin Ogletree who hit one of the batter’s eye.
