Friday Recap
LSR opening up on Everett Field #1
The 56th annual Smoky Mountain Classic began on Friday, July 12th at 10 am eastern time with 34 teams overall from 17 different states with 21 of the teams from the Conference USSSA league. The tournament was played at 6 fields spread across 4 different parks in and around the cities of Maryville and Alcoa, Tennessee. The first two rounds of the Smoky winner’s bracket were played on Friday with the 8 winners’ going to the prestigious show field Sandy Springs #3 to play down to 1 winner’s bracket finalist on Saturday and the “Final 4” teams finishing up the double elimination tournament on Sunday. The Smoky Mountain Classic is considered the best regular season slow pitch tournament in the world and is an unlimited home run tournament that uses 80 foot bases. The main park at Sandy Springs used the Dudley Pro-M Hardcore 44-375 and the other parks use the standard Dudley Pro-M. The tournament began with local teams playing the 2 “play in” games and then the “Round of 32” games began at Sandy Springs Park and Everett Park. Conference teams went 12-0 vs non-conference teams and all 12 games were run rules. Also in the “Round of 32” there were 4 games between Conference teams. Seminoles (OK-A) out slugged Classic Glass (CA-AA) 50-47 on the Sandy #4 field with its 310-310-310-310-274 fence dimensions. Seminoles was up 11 runs going into the bottom of the 7th in that one. Ely Reel (OH-B) upset Van Wert Frickers (OH-A) 24-8 on the Everett #1 field with its 290–295–290 field dimensions as Ely scored 10 in the bottom of the 1st and 9 in the bottom of the 4th to win by the run rule in the 5th. They won while hitting just 3 home runs. Back at Sandy #4 the #16 seeded Major team Sonny’s (WY) scored 22 runs in the bottom of the 1st and 17 more in the bottom of the 2nd to win 44-20 over Legendz (OK-A) in 3.5 innings. Sonny’s out homered Legendz 23-10 as Jeremy Yates, Daniel Cayton, Heath Barnes, and Josh Fyffe all went 5-5 on base and Yates had 4 HR and 9 RBI. And Primetime (GA-A) beat Rebel (MI-A) leaving them on the field in the bottom of the 6th 37-21 scoring double digit innings in the 2nd and 4th. Primetime out homered Rebel 18-9 as Ira Brown went 6-6 with 3 HR and 8 RBI, Alonzo Fields went 5-5, and the lefty Sean Ulmer hit 4 HR and drove in 8 on Sandy #4.
I-57’s Mitch Carriger goes off the net vs Juno Friday night in the “Round of 16”
The “Round of 16” then began around 5 PM Friday night in 90 degree heat with all 16 teams being from the Conference. On the show field with its 310-340-350-336-315 dimensions Nitro Circus (MD-AA) struggled passed Seminoles 21-17. Sports Reach out homered PrimeTime 14-7, separating with an 8 run top of the 7th to win 31-23. Dagmar Pena was 4-5 with 4 HR and 6 RBI and Austin Andrews 5-5 as he batted for the cycle for Sports Reach. Resmondo (FL-Major), the favorite to win the tournament, jumped all over Ely Reel scoring 22 runs in the top of the 1st inning as they cruised to a 40-13 win in 4 innings. Resmondo out homered Ely Reel 31-2. Kyle Pearson and Jason Matusik were 5-5, Matusik 5 HR, Pearson 4. And in the nightcap on the show field #1 seeded RoofX (IN-Major) had to play the Sonny’s Major team because Sonny’s had only played 5 tournaments so far in 2024 and thus was only the #16 seed due to a lack of points. It is very rare that two Major teams meet on Friday at the Smoky. The weather cooled off to 80 degrees and it was a beautiful night for softball. You can watch this historic game in condensed form on YouTube at this link. It was a strange game as Sonny’s put up a zero in the top of the 1st inning and RoofX built a solid lead scoring 6 or more runs in every inning after the 1st inning. But RoofX who had 4 chances to end the game by the run rule could not get the job done. And Sonny’s who kept from being run ruled, could not score a double digit inning to truly get back in the game. So the game went 7 innings and RoofX won 39-31 without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th. RoofX out homered Sonny’s 25-17 as the lefty Ryan Honeycutt went 6-6 with 5 HR and 10 RBI and pitcher Patrick Center went 6-6 in the win. For Sonny’s, they dropped DEEP into the loser’s bracket and it was going to be 95 degrees on Saturday! Note, when diving for a ball the RoofX middle infielder Jeremy Fry dislocated a finger on his throwing hand in this game. On Sandy #4 there was only one “Round of 16” game and that was Juno Athletics (NJ-Major) vs upset minded I-57 Roofing (IL-A) who was actually the higher seed in this game. Juno scored 21 runs in the top of the 3rd and led 36-27 going into what would be a wild 7th inning where Juno scored 24 runs to go up 60-27 and went on to win 60-44 when I-57 didn’t fold and put up 17 runs in the bottom of the 7th. Juno hit 40 home runs in the game! Over on Everett #1 with its short home run fence Str8play (CA-AA) scored 10 in the top of the 4th and 10 more in the top of the 6th to grind out a 32-17 run rule win over Dirty Vegas. Joey Capparelli was 5-5 with 4 HR and 7 RBI as Str8play out homered Dirty Vegas 17-11. On Everett #2 with its 310–300–293 field dimensions JBL Roofing (OH-AA) won the first battle of ‘AA’ teams over Westpoint (IN-AA) 36-15 as John Radich for JBL hit one of the longer homers at Everett in that game. And Bay Area Legends (CA-A) went off on LSR (IN-A) in the top of the 2nd after the sun went low enough in the sky for the batters to see the pitch. They scored 14 runs to go up 14-3. LSR then answered with 14 runs in the top of the 6th and they held Bay Area scoreless in the bottom of the 6th. But in the top of the 7th LSR managed just 1 run on a homer by Michael Rainer and in the bottom of the 7th Bay Area got a single by Isaac Gonzalez and a walk off homer by Joe Dorton to win it 26-25.
Bay Area’s Joe Dorton hits a walk off homer to beat LSR over at Everett #2 field.
The first battle of ‘AA’ teams was Westpoint and JBL.
Jeremy Yates homer’s against RoofX on Friday night.
Saturday Recap
Nitro Circus catcher Filip Washington hit 5 balls out of center field where it is 350 feet!
On Saturday morning at 9:15 AM the prestigious “Final 8” played back to back all day long on the show field (315-335-350-335-315) until the winner’s bracket final which finished at 1:30 AM Sunday morning. And I (DW) did a condensed game for all 7 games and am uploading them to YouTube in order daily. So, stop reading if you don’t want to know who won all of those games. At 9:15 AM it was Nitro and Bay Area Legends with Bay Area being the only ‘A’ team left in the winner’s bracket. Bay Area was in the game early when Brady Bate hit a controversial “fair/foul” homer down the right field line that was called fair for a grand slam. And they had the lead after 2 innings. But it was all Nitro Circus from the 3rd inning on as they scored 40 out of 41 runs at one point and won 51-15 out homering Bay Area 26-6. Flip Washington was 6-6 with 4 long home runs to center field in this one.
Newly acquired Jarod Kashner hits for Str8play vs Resmondo
In quarterfinal #2 Resmondo pitcher Travis Clark got a strikeout looking to start the game against Str8play and at one point early in the game Str8play made 6 outs in 7 batters. Meanwhile Resmondo scored 6 in the bottom of the 1st and 21 in the bottom of the 2nd and won in 3.5 innings 35-14 out homering Str8play 20-5. Bradley Jones, Jason Matusik, and Travis Clark were all 4-4 and Matusik hit 4 HR and drove in 7 runs.
Logan Rogers ties the game with two outs in the bottom of the 7th.
At noon in quarterfinal #3 Roofx put up two zeros when grounding into two double plays to start the first two innings against JBL Roofing. Then RoofX went down in order 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 3rd but were down just 5-0. It was at this time that the teams realized they were hitting well used balls and balls that were waterlogged from landing in the stream behind the main field. So as you look at the bracket, don’t compare the scores in the last two quarterfinals to games played earlier or later on the show field because the condition of the balls used was having a huge effect. JBL didn’t take much advantage of RoofX’s 3 zeroes to start the game and led just 5-0 going into the bottom of the 4th where Jeremy Fry, Tyler Ervine, and Terry Lambright all homered to tie the game at 5. In the top of the 5th JBL got two out home runs from Steve Hendrickson, “Laser” Dave Johnson, and John Radich to go up 8-5 and in the top of the 6th Chris Anninos hit one off the scoreboard, and Brock Frentzel and Bradley Scott homered to go up 12-6. But going into the 7th inning the game was tied at 12-12. In the top of the 7th JBL’s John Radich and Adam Ussery hit 2 out 2 run homers to lead JBL to a 10 run inning. Down 10 RoofX, who never gives up, scored 9 and Brandon Yoder the tying run on second tried to score on a tag up on a long flyball to left center and was thrown out at the plate in a very close play. Logan Rogers then with two outs homered to tie the game at 22-22. This game deserved extra innings to be honest and that is what the fans got. In the top of the 10th JBL continued to score big putting up 10 runs on 7 homers and this time they held off RoofX to win 32-24! JBL out homered RoofX 16-14 as leadoff hitter Dave Johnson and two hitter John Radich went a combined 8-10 with 6 HR and 9 RBI in the upset win.
Even the livestream video was inconclusive on whether or not the tag was made.
Sports Reach shortstop Joel Sanchez may have made the best play of the tournament on this grounder.
In quarterfinal #4 Juno Athletics scored 10 runs in the bottom of the 2nd which was only ended because of a great play by Sports Reach shortstop Joel Sanchez. But Juno led 21-10 after not being able to finish Sports Reach off in the bottom of the 5th. Sports Reach then base hit their way to 9 runs in the top of the 6th to pull to within 2 runs 21-19. Juno though in the bottom of the 6th scored 14 on 7 homers leaving Sports Reach on the field with a Jacob Clifton homer 35-19.
Final 4 Recap
Nitro’s Josh Kirsten doubles against Resmondo in semifinal #1.
The semifinals started in the early evening Saturday on the show field which is an old high school baseball field. In the 1st semifinal Resmondo got a grand slam from Travis Clark in the bottom of the 1st to go up 13-5 on Nitro Circus. In the top of the 4th Resmondo got a great play by middle infielder Cory Briggs to turn a double play to hold Nitro to just 4 runs but Nitro pitcher Tom Bloom tied the game at 22-22 on a home run. In the top of the 5th Nitro Circus scored 12 runs as Clark walked too many batters and Chris Greinert hit a big 3 run homer to give Nitro a 30-28 lead. But in the bottom of the 5th after Resmondo scored 4 runs, the Nitro Circus team complained about waterlogged balls and new balls were brought in and Resmondo promptly scored 17 more runs to go up 49-36. In the 6th Nitro answered with 11 runs of their own but Resmondo left them on the field scoring 16 runs in the bottom of the 6th 65-47. Resmondo out homered Nitro 37-24 as the league’s leading hitter Kyle Pearson went 8-8 and Bradley Jones and Cory Briggs each went 7-7 for Resmondo. Jones had 4 HR and 11 RBI and every starter hit at least one home run.
Juno’s Chad Mullins blasts a homer against JBL in semifinal #2
In semifinal #2 as it started to cool off, Juno Athletics went off on JBL scoring 11 in the bottom of the 1st, 19 in the 2nd, and 13 in the 3rd to win in 3.5 innings 42-24 out homering JBL 20-7. Andrew Collins, Joe Joe Bennett, and Chad Mullins were each 6-6, Collins had 4 HR and 9 RBI. Juno played most of Friday and Saturday without slugger Ryan Harvey who was fighting a pinched nerve that prevented him from swinging without pain.
Winner’s Final Recap
Bradley Jones homer’s vs Juno in the winner’s final.
The winner’s final started late Saturday and ended at 1:30 am Sunday morning in much cooler conditions with no real wind to speak of. Juno Athletics had an impressive start scoring 30 runs on 18 home runs in the top of the 1st inning. They hit 9 home runs in a row at one point and Resmondo pitcher Travis Clark gave up too many walks. The reluctance of the Major teams to put in their backup pitchers to change things up was an interesting story throughout the Smoky this year on most of the top teams. But Resmondo never gave up and made a slow-methodical “two steps forward, one step back” comeback. While both teams scored in every inning, Juno never had another double digit inning as the adrenaline they had early in the game seemed to evaporate before our eyes. Meanwhile Resmondo scored at least 7 runs in every inning, 13 in the 3rd, 22 in the 5th, 13 in the 6th and didn’t have to bat in the 7th as they won the game by an incredible score of 73-61! It felt like every out was either a long flyout or a great defensive play. Josh Riley for Resmondo was 9-9 with 7 HR and 11 RBI. The 7 HR in a game tied the Smoky single game record. Buddy Wolf was also 9-9 in the win.
Loser’s Bracket Recap
The loser’s bracket actually began with a couple of games on Friday night and played all day Saturday in the heat. Friday on the small Everett field #1 Legendz the conference ‘A’ team from Texas beat an ‘E’ team 76-0 in 3 innings while hitting 27 home runs. Ely Reel beating Classic Glass 30-29 was one of the bigger upsets. Primetime, I-57, Westpoint, Dirty Vegas, Ely Reel, and Seminoles all made short runs in the loser’s bracket to end up scoring some decent Conference points. But the big runs in the loser’s bracket were made by LSR who beat Classics, Seminoles, and Sports Reach to finish tied for 7th. And Sonny’s who beat Eagle Paint, Westpoint, Str8play, Bay Area, and JBL to make it to Sunday.
Sunday Recap
Joey Miller hits for RoofX taking on Sonny’s Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning at 8 am it was Sonny’s and RoofX and the only 4 teams left in the tournament were all 4 of the major teams. RoofX jumped out to a 13-3 lead hitting some “squirrel killers” into the left field trees. But they left the bases loaded in the top of the 3rd and put up two zeroes in a row as Sonny’s climbed back into the game on a 2 out 3 run homer by Kyle Pearson to bring them to within 2 runs 13-11. But RoofX answered with a two out clutch homer by Ryan Mcclanahan to make it 20-13 in the top of the 6th and finished off Sonny’s with a 13 run barrage in the top of the 7th 38-24. They out homered Sonny’s 15-9 as Mitch Lendenski had 3 HR and 8 RBI.
Joe Joe Bennett homer’s in the loser’s final vs RoofX.
In the loser’s bracket finals Juno Athletics got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 4th up 11-8 on RoofX and took advantage of an infield error which should have been a double play to score 11 runs in the bottom of the 4th. In the top of the 5th RoofX answered with a 10 run inning as Joey Miller hit a bases loaded double and Faron Fry hit a 3 run homer to cut the Juno lead to 22-18 as Brandon Jonas came in to relieve Mason Farmer. In the bottom of the 5th Juno had a 2 out rally started by a Ryan Harvey home run to put up 5 runs. In the top of the 6th RoofX catcher Terry Lambright hit a 2 out 3 run homer to tie the game at 27-27 but Juno in the bottom of the 6th got a 2 out backside homer from Jacob Clifton and a bunch of two out “goodies” to go up 35-27 and they held on and advanced to the championship 35-30 out homering RoofX 18-10. Jacob Clifton led Juno with 4 home runs.
Josh Riley homers against Juno in the Championship.
In the championship game which started around noon on Sunday in 90 degree heat, Juno came out firing grabbing an impressive 31-6 lead on 18 home runs going into the bottom of the 2nd and it felt like they may force the “if” game. But a “sort of middle war” knocked out Juno pitcher Mason Farmer and Resmondo who is never fazed by a deficit did their two step forward one step backward methodical comeback and scored 9 in the bottom of the 2nd, 10 in the bottom of the 3rd, 12 in the bottom of the 4th, and 22 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 59-45 lead into the 6th. Just like the night before you could almost feel the adrenaline drain from the Juno players as Resmondo sucked the life out of them with those long double digit innings. And Resmondo finished the comeback in the bottom of the 6th 61-45 leaving Juno on the field with a 15 run rule win. For Resmondo Kyle Pearson was 8-8 with 5 HR. Bradley Jones 7-7 with 5 HR. And Phil Matte was 7-7 with 6 HR and 11 RBI. Every player on Resmondo homered as they out homered Juno 35-28. For Juno Jacob Clifton was 5-6 with 4 HR and 11 RBI.
The Smoky is over and we have the first repeat winner (Resmondo) in 5 years. I want to thank the umpires for their hard work in those long games with 90 degree heat. And I want to thank Chris Clark and Joe Huff for their hospitality as well as the scorekeepers for unplugging and plugging in the livestream at the various parks for me.
Long Bomber of the Week!
The Long Bomber of the Week goes to Josh Riley and Jeremy Yates for tying for the Home Run title with 25 each. Honorable mention goes to Jason Magnum, Tyler Ervine, Ryan Honeycutt, Josh Cardwell, Chris Greinert, Joe Boland, Jason Matusik, and pretty much the entire Resmondo team for hitting crowd pleasers at games I was coving on the show field. And Kyle Pearson (OG) pictured below for winning the Thursday night Home Run Derby.

Team by Team Notes
1st Place – Resmondo/All American Restoration/O
FL-Major Record 6-0
Resmondo struggled to be honest in their last 3 games vs Nitro Circus and Juno but credit a relentless offense which overcame defensive mistakes and walks to win their 2nd Smoky in a row. The entire team seemed healthy for the 1st time this year and they grabbed the points lead in the Conference by 76 over RoofX which puts them in the drivers seat to win the Conference Championship and be the #1 seed for the Major World Series. Looking at the all time Smoky winner’s list, it looks like Travis Resmondo has now won 15 Smokies! WOW.
Kyle Pearson continues to lead the league in on base percentage .865.
Teams are allowed to stand on the dirt patch outside of the dugouts. That is out of play.
2nd Place – Juno Athletics
NJ-Major Record 5-2
Juno had by far their best tournament of the season as they were only 14-12 coming into the Smoky. To finish 2nd they showed a lot of heart and absolutely came out smashing in the first innings of their two games against Resmondo. They were winning 30 to 0 after the top of the 1st inning in the winner’s final and 31-6 after an inning and a half in the championship. Boland, Collins, and Harvey were playing hurt. Mason Farmer did most of the pitching. Juno jumps to 8th in the points.
3rd Place – RoofX/BadDraw/CE/Pure/Envy
IN-Major Record 6-2
RoofX finishes a spot short of where most thought they would finish. They did win that huge matchup with Sonny’s Friday night and then beat them again on Sunday but got tripped up by JBL on Saturday in the quarterfinals in extra innings and lost to a “fresher” Juno on Sunday. Faron Fry put up some big numbers as he and Ryan Honeycutt led the offense. Patrick Center did most of the pitching but Mooch did get 3 starts. RoofX would almost have to win both Evansville dual tournaments and finish ahead of Resmondo at the Conference Championships in order to get the #1 seed for the major.
RoofX middle infielder Jeremy Fry most likely dislocated a finger on his throwing hand on this play Friday night.
Honeycutt celebrates a grand slam.
4th Place – Sonny’s/Worsham/RedAthlete/Haymak/R
WY-Major Record 6-2
Sonny’s lost the grudge match with RoofX on Friday night and that sent them deep in the loser’s bracket. They played all day on Saturday to get to the Sunday Final 4 but ran out of gas. Jeremy Yates put on a hitting display all weekend, Heath Barnes put up some huge numbers, and Kyle Pearson OG who won the Home Run Derby kept that stroke going all weekend. How about David McDowell with the .800 in pinch hit duty! Bill Pinkham who still isn’t 100% did the pitching. Daniel Cayton was a no show on Sunday.
Cayton apparently no showed on Sunday morning for Sonny’s.
Tied 5th – JBL Roofing/Pauer
OH-AA Record 3-2
JBL beat Westpoint and RoofX and only lost to Major teams. Another solid weekend as they move to 6th in the points standings. They still have to turn in stats for the Smoky.
Tied 5th – Nitro/Beloli/Ataraxis/SBT/SOL/BAF/K
MD-AA Record 3-2
Nitro Circus was so close to beating Resmondo in the semifinals, if they had only picked up those last 3 bats they needed and played major, what could have been? They remind me of the Thunder team a few years back when they folded a team that could have won the Major. Then late in the game against Resmondo they complained about the water logged balls while on defense? Which led to new balls being brought into the game and a 21 run Resmondo inning put them into the loser’s bracket. Flip Washington and Chris Greinert led the offense and how about those 3 – 450+ foot shots Josh Cardwell hit Saturday morning? WOW.
Josh Cardwell hit 3 balls against Bay Area that I estimate at 450+
Tied 7th – LSR/BaughFord/TRU/Slugger/Riot
IN-A Record 4-2
I didn’t see much of LSR play after they lost on a walk off homer to Bay Area Legends Friday night. But they beat Seminoles, and Sports Reach in the loser’s bracket to finish tied for 7th and are now 9th in the points standings. Zach Goleniak .833 with 16 HR, and Jagger Harjo .857 with 15 HR led the offense. I understand that Harjo was 7-7 with a Smoky record tying 7 HR and was on deck to hit for the record when his team made the final out…
Tied 7th – Bay Area Legends
CA-A Record 3-2
Bay Area another solid weekend as they move to 11th in the points. They picked up Mike Brambilla. Joe Dorton was .900 with 9 HR. Brady Bate .833 with 6 HR.
Bay Area picked up Mike Brambilla for the weekend.
Bryson Baker returned to the show field where he is tied for the single Smoky home run record of 30 with Rusty Bumgardner.
More Teams
Tied 9th – Sports Reach/Demarini/Grizzy/SMHS (KY-AA) 2-2 – Sports Reach is now 4th in the points but at the Smoky they really only beat Primetime and lost to Juno and LSR. Sports Reach played all of their games in the heat of the day and really didn’t hit many homers. Joey Kampfer led the way .800 with 1 HR. Dagmar Pena hit 8.
Tied 9th – PrimeTime/Easton/BallHawk (GA-A) 3-2 – Prime beat Rebel, lost to Sports Reach, beat Carolina Prime and I-57, before losing to Bay Area. Aaron Jackson led the offense .810, 13 HR and Lonzo Fields and Ira Brown put up some big numbers. Primetime is now 12th in the points.
Tied 9th – DIRTY VEGAS / STEEL / ARK FAB (TX-A) 3-2 – DV lost to Str8play, beat a couple non-conference teams, and beat Ely Reel, before RoofX put them out. They still need to turn in stats for their last two games. They are now 16th in points.
Tied 9th – Str8play/Rebel/MAJ/DTS/LA Empire (CA-AA) 2-2 – Str8play beat Dirty Vegas, waited too long to change pitchers against Resmondo, and lost to Sonny’s by 20. They picked up Jarod Kashner who was with Rebel and played for Chick-fil-a the past couple years. Bryan Dezern, Misael Tavarez, Kashner, Herren, and Neal were all .800 or better. Capparelli led with 10 HR.

Everett #2 always has the sun issue for the 6 PM game.
Crowds were bigger in 2024 due in part there was no rain to scare them off.
Livestream view was good except for Everett #1 which lacked internet reception.
