Thursday Recap

Drew Hall hit two grand slams for BeHappy vs GTL.

Seattle Dual #1 began on Thursday morning at 8:30 am Pacific time at the Hogan Park in Kent, Washington just outside of Seattle. All 4 days of the tournament were played in near perfect softball weather. There were 17 teams overall from 6 different states and 16 of them were from the Conference USSSA League. For the 1st Dual they used the Dudley Classic-M China ball on 300 foot dirt fields with normal Conference home run rules based upon the higher classified team. In the “play in” game and the “Round of 16” there were no real upsets to mention although MOG/Young Adult Family Home (WA-C) did beat Skangers/Kautz Fireworks (WA-B) 15-13.

“Round of 8”:

BeHappy/StandardPlumbing (AZ-AA) made quick work of the local conference ‘B’ team GTL/Legacy/Dirty 34-9, scoring 11 in the bottom of the 1st, 16 in the bottom of the 2nd, and they left GTL on the field with a 7 run bottom of the 3rd inning with the final blow being a grand slam by Andrew Hall, his 2nd grand slam of the game. BeHappy out homered GTL 12-3 in the game and the top of the BeHappy lineup, Zack Smith, Danny Higa, and Andrew Hall went a combined 12-15 with 3 HR, 13 RBI, and 11 runs scored in 3 innings. Richard Rollice, Kade Christensen, and Kyle Johnson each went 4-4 on base in the win as well.

#2 seeded DanSmith/Proton/Thunder/RoofX/RF/BD (IN-Major) hot off their Smoky Mountain Classic tournament win, played their 2nd game at 11:30 AM against local conference ‘B’ team J&I/Westcoast/HellsCanyonSports. Dan Smith scored their 3rd and 4th double digit inning in a row in the tournament in the 1st and 2nd inning and beat J&I 37-10 in 3 innings. Andrew Collins and Tyler Storey were on base 4-4, Arlis Miller at lead off and Austyn Dawe in the 3 hole each went 5-5, and Joe Joe Bennett hit 3 home runs and drove in 7.

At 1:15 PM the #1 seed Resmondo-SIS-Stub Term-RDD-S&S-LLC- (FL-Major) played their 2nd game beating Barely Chipped/Supreme Threads (CA-B) 32-6 in 3 innings, out homering them 15-3. Kyle Pearson, Bradley Jones, Daniel Cayton, Jason Matusik, Quincy Latimore, and Brad Reckart were all perfect on base in the game and Jones and Phil Matte each drove in 4 runs.

And CutThroat/ImpactEdge/CourseyRealty (CA-B) upset Bay Area Legends (CA-A) 39-17 over on field #2 to advance to the semifinals.

Semifinals:

Arlis Miller at leadoff for Dan Smith vs BeHappy.

The semifinals were played back to back on the show field starting at 3 PM as the tournament was almost 2 hours ahead of time due to having so many 3 inning run rules. The first semi was Dan Smith vs BeHappy and shortstop Joel Sanchez was spewing “Joelisms” like the pre-game speech “it’s ok to try your best, and hit the f’ing ball out”, and during the game “he took his Viagra for that shot”, or “that’s our old guy” when his pitcher Kyle Johnson had a big hit. But the BeHappy offense didn’t show up for this one as Dan Smith scored 7 runs on 3 home runs in the bottom of the 1st, held BeHappy scoreless in the 1st, 2nd, and 6th innings, and left BeHappy on the field in the 6th drawing a bunch of walks and a final Tyler Storey 3 run homer to win 33-16. Joe Bennett was 5-5 with 5 extra base hits and Faron Fry doing the pitching was 5-5 with 5 runs scored. Dan Smith decided not to use Andy Purcell in Seattle since he still had a banged up knee from the Smoky.

In the 2nd semifinal Thursday afternoon, it became evident that the wind blowing in and across the field toward the 1st base dugout on the show field #3 was affecting some of the home runs and lefty’s and right handed hitters hitting to the right side had a better chance of hitting it out. CutThroat grabbed their only lead 3-0 in the top of the 1st on 2 home runs, and then it was all Resmondo the rest of the way as they scored 8 on 4 in the bottom of the 1st, 16 in the bottom of the 3rd, and they shut out CutThroat in the 2nd and 3rd inning to win in 3.5 innings 26-6. Resmondo was led by Kyle Pearson, Tyler Marshburn, Steele Lewis, and Quincy Latimore who were all perfect on base in the game. And they out homered CutThroat 13-4.

The winner’s final was then played between the two superpowers Dan Smith and Resmondo at 5:30 PM in the same wind conditions blowing in towards the 1st base dugout. Resmondo led the season series at this point 6 games to 3. Dan Smith struck first winning the 1st inning 7-2 on a Faron Fry grand slam, then Dan Smith got 9 straight hits to start the top of the 2nd including a Joe Joe Bennett grand slam. In the bottom of the 2nd Dan Smith center field Brandon Yoder made a nice catch and Anthony Acevedo playing 2nd made two nice plays and Dan Smith added 7 more in the top of the 3rd to go up 23-5. In the bottom of the 3rd the Dan Smith defense continued to shine as pitcher Faron Fry stabbed two middle shots, and middle infielder Jeremy Fry (his brother) made a great diving stop. In the top of the 4th Resmondo played some great defense of their own as shortstop Tyler Marshburn and middle infielder Heath Barnes shut down Dan Smith finally but it was Dan Smith leading 25-8 and 12-5 on home runs after 4 complete innings. In the bottom of the 5th Resmondo got back in the game scoring 15 runs on 6 home runs to pull to within 1 run 28-27, the big blow was a two out Travis Clark grand slam. But it was all Dan Smith the rest of the game as they outscored Resmondo 18-2 in the last two innings, got Resmondo to somehow hit 6 consecutive ground balls, and won by the run rule 46-29, out homering them 16-13. Arlis Miller at lead off was 7-7 in the game, Jeremy Fry at the two spot was 6-7, Tyler Ervine drove in 8 runs, and Faron Fry drove in 9. Tyler Marshburn and Steele Lewis for Resmondo were each 5-5.

The loser’s bracket played out all day Thursday with BeHappy beating Bay Area Legends 49-33 in the top half of the loser’s bracket as Kade Christensen went 7-7 with 4 homers and 12 RBI. BeHappy scored 25 runs in the top of the 5th inning in that game. And CutThroatSports beat GTL 27-23 in the bottom half of the loser’s bracket, scoring 12 runs in the top of the 5th to make it to Friday’s final 4 teams.

Friday Recap

The “Joelisms” are entertaining.

On Friday morning at 8 am it was the 4th place game of Dual #1 between BeHappy and CutThroat played in cool crisp 61 degree air. It was a slow start for both teams as BeHappy left the bases loaded in the top of the 1st and someone on the bench was thrown out for swearing over a strike call. Since the umpire didn’t know who it was, the sponsor/manager Matt Webb accepted the bench ejection. The score was just 2-0 BeHappy going to the bottom of the 2nd where CutThroat opened up and scored 10 runs on 5 home runs to grab their first lead. BeHappy responded scoring 7 on just 1 home run in the top of the 3rd. CutThroat answered with 7 on 1 all with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th but they actually trailed BeHappy 26-22. CutThroatSports was not clean on defense in this game and BeHappy took advantage of multiple errors and misplays and scored 15 runs on 4 home runs including a Richard Rollice grand slam in the top of the 7th and they advanced 46-31. Andrew Hall was 7-8 with 3 HR, 7 RBI, and 7 runs in the win as the entire team hit the ball well.

In the loser’s final Brad Reckart hit a ball that was 8 feet foul and it curved back 10 feet fair?

The loser’s final then was played between BeHappy and Resmondo and it began with some more words of wisdom from Joel Sanchez telling his team “You can’t chop a tree down in one swing”. And BeHappy followed his advice scoring 15 runs on just 5 home runs to begin the game. But a very focused Resmondo team answered with 11 runs on just 2 homers and they followed that up in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 10 on 4 to go up 21-19. The two teams were about even through the middle innings until Resmondo scored 18 on 6 in the bottom of the 5th to take a 45-38 lead and they left BeHappy on the field in the bottom of the 6th scoring 8 runs and ending it 53-38 on a Quincy Latimore grand slam. Bradley Jones, Tyler Marshburn, and Quincy Latimore were all 7-7 in the win and Heath Barnes at lead off was 6-7 and hit for the cycle. Brad Reckart did the pitching in this one as they rested Travis Clark who I think was still dealing with a muscle tweak from Chicago which happened at the end of June.

The championship was another heavy weight battle and it was Faron Fry pitching for Dan Smith and Travis Clark for Resmondo. Too many walks led to a Cory Briggs home run in the top of the 1st for Resmondo and Tyler Marshburn held the Dan Smith offense in check with a nice diving stop at shortstop in the bottom of the 1st. In the 2nd it was Tyler Storey the Dan Smith left field making two nice catches on some nasty knuckleball line drives to hold Resmondo to zero. In the top of the 3rd Resmondo scored 11 on 4 even though Kyle Pearson grounded into a double play, and in the bottom of the 3rd Dan Smith answered with an Andrew Collins grand slam but it was 20-15 Resmondo after 3 innings. In the top of the 4th Dan Smith threw out Briggs trying to turn a single into a double, and in the bottom of the 4th Dan Smith scored 10 and grabbed a 25-23 lead when Collins and Austyn Dawe hit 3 run homers. In the bottom of the 5th Dan Smith went up again 34-30 on an Arlis Miller grand slam. Then in the 6th after Resmondo scored just 1 run, Resmondo got Dan Smith to go down in order 1-2-3. In the top of the 7th Resmondo grabbed the lead on a Tyler Marshburn one out three run homer but they only had a 36-34 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th needing 2 to tie and 3 to win with plenty of home runs left, Dan Smith got a leadoff single from Jeremy Fry, a fielder’s choice groundout, then a single by Josh Riley. Then after a meeting at the mound, Resmondo decided to walk Austyn Dawe, and Joe Joe Bennett (who was the tournament MVP) hit a walk off grand slam to win the game and the tournament 38-36. Austyn Dawe and Joe Bennett were each 6-6 on base in the game and Bennett drove in 9 runs. Travis Clark for Resmondo was 6-6 back in the leadoff spot. It was Dan Smith’s 2nd tournament win of the season and 2nd in a row (Smoky).

Dual #2 began as Dual #1 was still playing their final games on Friday morning. In the 2nd Dual they played as many of the winner’s games on the show field #1 which was an all artificial turf baseball field with 335-370-395-370-370-335 dimensions where they used the Dudley Hardcore balls. The rest of the games were played on fields 2 and 3 which were dirt fields with 300 foot fences and the Dudley Classic-M China ball was used and all games in Dual #2 were unlimited home runs and 80 foot bases. In the “play in” games and the “Round of 16” there were no upsets.

“Round of 8”:

The quarterfinals were played starting at 4:45 PM Friday where Dan Smith on the baseball field beat J&I 36-1 in two at bats while hitting 13 home runs to zero. Jeremy Fry, Tyler Ervine, Joe Bennett, Tyler Storey, Joey Miller, and Brandon Yoder were all perfect on base in the win.

At 8:15 PM on the baseball field it was Resmondo scoring 29 runs in the top of the 4th to beat Skangers 44-5. Resmondo out homered them 15-0. Travis Clark and Cory Briggs were perfect on base in the game and Kyle Pearson went 5-6 with 4 HR and 9 RBI.

The other two quarterfinal games were played on the 300 foot fields. GTL scored 11 in the bottom of the 3rd and beat fellow ‘B’ team CutThroat 25-8 in 4.5 innings as Jeff Andrews, Joe Acevedo, and Chris Benigno each went 4-4 on base.

And BeHappy after scoring 11 runs in the top of the 1st inning on just 1 home run, trailed Bay Area Legends 23-11 going into the bottom of the 6th after BeHappy failed to score in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings? In the bottom of the 6th BeHappy scored 11 runs on 4 home runs to pull to within 23-22 but Bay Area answered with 9 of their own as Brent McClure hit his 3rd home run of the game to go up 32-22. In the bottom of the 7th, down 10 runs, BeHappy walked down Bay Area and won the game on a one out grand slam by Zack Smith 34-32. Drew Hall was 6-6 with 2 HR and 7 RBI in the win for BeHappy as they were out homered in the unlimited home run game by Bay Area 14-10.

Saturday Recap

Resmondo CF Cory Briggs makes the biggest catch of the game in extra innings.

Semifinals:

The semifinals were played on the baseball field in the afternoon on Saturday. In the 1st one at 2 PM Pacific time, Dan Smith hit four straight home runs to start the game and scored 11 in the 1st and 12 in the 4th to beat GTL 35-5 in 4 innings out homering them 16-2. The first 4 batters in the Dan Smith lineup (Arlis, Jeremy, Ervine, Riley) were a combined 16-20 with 9 HR, 17 RBI, and 15 runs scored.

Semifinal #2 between Resmondo and the ‘AA’ team BeHappy was probably the best game of the tournament. Both teams got off to a slow start as it was only 2-2 after one inning. You have to remember the baseball field at Hogan Park is the biggest field that the Conference plays on all year long. The gaps are huge. But after the 1st inning the scoring came in bunches. Matt Brady hit a grand slam for BeHappy to put them up 10-9 in the bottom of the 2nd. In the middle innings the teams traded multiple double plays. BeHappy actually led 28-26 going into the top of the 6th where too many walks and a blown pickle led to a 10 run Resmondo inning. BeHappy down 41-31 going into the bottom of the 7th did the same thing they did against Bay Area in their previous game and came all the way back and had multiple chances to win the game but managed only to tie it 41-41 after scoring 10 runs. In the top of the 8th Resmondo put up a 6 spot and in the bottom of the extra inning BeHappy managed just one run as Resmondo center fielder Cory Briggs made a spectacular catch to save the game with Resmondo winning 47-42. Resmondo out homered BeHappy 23-12 as Travis Clark at lead off was 6-7, Bradley Jones hit 4 home runs, and Bubba Mack went 7-7 with 4 HR, 8 RBI, and 7 runs scored.

The winner’s bracket final was played right after that extra inning semifinal game and it was Resmondo and Dan Smith once again. Now the season series was 6-5 Resmondo. Both teams came out of the gate firing with Resmondo scoring 10 on 4 in the top of the 1st and Dan Smith scoring 14 on 8 in the bottom half. Then Resmondo kept it going scoring 12 on 7 in the top of the 2nd, but Dan Smith managed just 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. In the top of the 5th Resmondo’s Quincy Latimore hit a grand slam to put them up 41-30 and it looked like Resmondo might pull away. But Dan Smith took advantage of some Resmondo misplays to score 12 and take a 42-41 lead. This is where the high scoring ended and Resmondo had just a 48-44 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. But Dan Smith needing 4 to tie and 5 to win with the heart of their order up, got a lead off lineout to Bubba Mack who made a nice leaping play at third base, and Resmondo held Dan Smith to just one run (an Ervine homer) and held on to win 48-45. Dan Smith had actually out homered Resmondo in the game 28-27 but Travis Clark at lead off was 7-8 with 4 HR, 7 RBI, and 7 runs scored, and Jeremy Yates was 7-7 with 6 HR, 8 RBI, and 7 runs scored in the win. For Dan Smith Austyn Dawe was 7-7 with 4 HR and Tyler Storey 6-6 with 3 HR.

The loser’s bracket played out all day Saturday as Bay Area beat Somers, Skangers, and GTL, before losing to BeHappy 43-17 in the 4th place game. In the lower half of the bracket the non-conference ‘B’ team Barely Chipped from California beat MOG, J&I, and CutThroat before losing to BeHappy to finish tied for 5th with GTL. BeHappy then walked over to the baseball field to play the loser’s bracket final against Dan Smith Friday night but was too “banged up” to continue and forfeited after 1 batter.

Sunday Recap

Travis Clark and the Resmondo offense didn’t give Dan Smith a chance in the Championship.

On a beautiful Sunday morning July 26th, it was again Dan Smith taking on Resmondo in the championship and trying to force an “if” game. Dan Smith struggled to score in the top of the 1st and only scratched across 2 runs. It became evident that the wet ball off the turf was making it hard for infielders to field and throw as this was one of the worst defensive games of 2026 after a weekend of pretty solid defense on both the dirt and turf in Seattle to that point. Resmondo took advantage of those errors in the bottom of the 1st and 2nd innings to the tune of scoring 29 runs on 13 home runs to go up 29-12. The Dan Smith offense was solid the rest of the game but the Resmondo offense was just too much and the Dan Smith defense dug themselves a hole that their offense couldn’t climb out of. At some point Joe Bennett extended the game to avoid the run rule by hitting a long homer to center field that hit a car. But Resmondo kept hitting 2 out home runs and finally leading 49-36 in the bottom of the 5th, Travis Clark led off the inning with a home run and Kyle Pearson ended the game by the 15 run mercy rule 51-36 with a homer. Resmondo out homered Dan Smith 23-15 and scored 9 or more runs in all of the full innings. Travis Clark, Kyle Pearson, Phil Matte, and Jason Matusik were all a perfect 7-7 or 6-6 in the game. Pearson was 7-7 with 4 home runs and 12 RBI. And Jason Matusik hit 5 homers and Matte 4 in the win. Resmondo increased their season record to 8-5 over Dan Smith for the year and won their Conference high 6th tournament of the season!

Long Bomber of the Week!

There were some creatures hit in Seattle. Bradley Jones kept trying to slice the tree tops off in center field on field #3. But Kyle Pearson from Resmondo gets the Long Bomber of the week as he hit a hardcore ball from the baseball field into fair territory on field #2 which minimum is 490 feet and most likely was hit over 500 feet.

Resmondo played well and kept their points lead at 130 over Juno but the season isn’t over. Resmondo has never won a tournament in Evansville, Indiana where the Dual there starts on Thursday, August 13th. But Juno or Dan Smith would almost have to win both Evansville Dual tournaments to pull close enough to challenge Resmondo at the Conference Championships. Travis Clark is having an MVP season on both sides of the ball. Kyle Pearson dominated the baseball field. Bradley Jones and Tyler Marshburn are becoming more consistent, as if they weren’t already. And the rest of the team who kind of rotate in and out of the lineup seem to all have big games here and there. In Dual #1 Bradley Jones .846, Marshburn .923, Jason Matusik .810, and Quincy Latimore .864 led the offense. Marshburn drew 11 walks. In Dual #2 it was Travis Clark .929, Bubba Mack .833, Phil Matte .840, Jason Matusik .818, Kyle Pearson .821, and Jeremy Yates .808. Clark, Jones, Marshburn, Matte, Pearson, and Yates all had double digit home runs in just 4 games on a very big baseball field.

IN-Major Record 9-2

Finishes: 1st, 2nd

Dan Smith did not use their secret weapon Andy Purcell (knee) at all in Seattle. Faron Fry pitched great and the Fry brothers and defense had a good weekend until Sunday’s defensive collapse. They used Acevedo more on the 300 foot fields and Joey Miller on the baseball field. Joe Bennett continues to be on fire with the bat. Ryan Harvey did not make the trip. Something about he doesn’t like to fly. They could have used him after the Smoky he had. Look for Dan Smith push Juno for that 2nd place position in the points come Evansville. Joe Bennett .885, Austyn Dawe .852, and Arlis Miller .889 led the offense in Dual #1. In Dual #2 Andrew Collins .833, Dawe .826, Tyler Ervine .852, Joey Miller .944, Tyler Storey .867 led the way. Dawe hit 14 HR and he and Jeremy Fry had 20 RBI.

AZ-AA Record 8-4

Finishes: 3rd, 3rd

BeHappy was the only ‘AA’ team in the tournament and finished where they were expected but with that forfeit, which you know DW doesn’t like, that is all I will say about them. Is there a good “Joelism” for a forfeit?

Bay Area Legends

CA-A Record 7-4

Finishes: 5th, 4th

Bay Area was upset in the first dual and rebounded in the 2nd and played a lot of games which they needed. I still don’t know if they have played a tournament with their full team yet? I have to give Mac Rio some press for playing a nice 2nd base in that one condensed game I did when they played BeHappy. They probably gave up too many walks during the weekend. Chente likes to think outside the box by doing things like going 4 man outfield against Joel and things like that. Bay Area has never fully participated in the conference with things like team pictures and turning stats in on time though. 🙁

CutThroatSports was best in class out of the ‘B’ teams and had a solid showing. Kyle Harmon did the pitching. The offense was hot and cold. They are still the best or at least top 3 ‘B’ team in the country. They need to turn in Seattle stats.

GTL/Legacy/Dirty

WA-B Record 2-2

Tied 5th

GTL had their moments beating their local rivals and a revenge win over CutThroatSports who they have had some great games with this year. Leadoff hitter Austin Breer led the offense in dual #1 .783 and Jeff Andrews, Wilkyns Jimenez, and Blake Madewell were all over .700. Andrews and Soto were the only players over .700 in Dual #2. Ironically they hit less total home runs in Dual #2 which was unlimited than they did in Dual #1?

Joe Acevedo from GTL and Anthony Acevedo from Dan Smith played against each other in Dual #2.

Kyle Pearson at .824 is in a tight battle for the Batting Title with teammate Travis Clark (.822) and Juno’s Dan Herren (.828). But Herren doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify (180) yet. Herren has just 134.

Quincy had one foot in, should that have been a catch?

Classic-M China ball gave infielders and pitchers a chance but still there were huge scores.

The Hardcore ball used on the baseball field flew incredibly well. Many players think the Hardcore should be used for the Major World Series. I have to say, while it more consistent than the Stadium ZN ball, do we really want to see the the crazy knuckling, hard to field and throw hardcore ball? And do we really need higher scores and more home runs at the Major World Series?
