Friday Night Recap

Greinert takes on Dan Smith Friday night.

The Conference Championship was played at the Mid America Sports Complex in Shawnee, KS Friday and Saturday, September 18-19. Most of the games were played on the all turf baseball fields with the Dudley Hardcore ball and normal Conference Home Run Limits. There were 16 Conference men’s teams from 13 different states playing a double elimination tournament with the finishing points being added to each teams Conference points total.

“Round of 16”

The round of 16 began Friday night at 4 PM on 4 fields, 2 – 300 foot softball fields, and the Fenway (297-323-405-386-334) and Royal (330-370-381-370-330) baseball fields. All of them were artificial turf.

Over on field #2 using the Dudley Classic-M ball on 300 foot fields, GREINERT – KOVAL – BAF (MD-A) overcame BeHappy/StandardPlumbing’s (AZ-AA) 13 run bottom of the 3rd and 21-18 deficit to upset BeHappy 36-28 while out homering them 15-13. Greinert held BeHappy scoreless in the last two innings. 3rd Baseman Tyler Lindsay led the way hitting for the cycle, going 5-6 with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored.

#3 seeded DanSmith/Proton/Thunder/RoofX/RF/BD (IN-Major) made quick work of Combat MFG (OK-B) 29-9 while scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the 3rd of the 4 inning run rule win. This game was played on the big Royals baseball field with the Dudley Hardcore ball which was absolutely flying.

#5 seeded I-57/Beloli SIS/All Hustle/JBL/Axe (IL-AA) beat ACS/Easton (FL-A) 29-13 in 5 innings, out homering them 9-2 on the field #1 softball field. I-57 scored 12 in the top of the 1st and 12 more in the top of the 2nd. Jeff Roxby was 4-5 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in the win.

Over on Fenway with its short but high left field fence, #4 seeded ShoreOL/CheapSuits/Str8play/Rebel (CA-Major) scored in every inning and beat a feisty JPS/No Pressure/Blane Dunn Const. (AR-B) team 25-20 while out homering them 13-8. For Shore OL, Joey Capparelli, Ryan Honeycutt, and Chris Anninos were all 4-5 with 3 home runs.

At 5:45 PM central time the rest of the round of 16 played. Primetime/Marucci/Ballhawk (GA-A) on field #2 softball field hit two 3 run homers in the top of the 1st vs DIRTY VEGAS / #TeamDawn (TX-A) in a battle of top ‘A’ teams. But Ben Dunn hit an inside the park homer somehow on an infield grounder and 5 straight walks in the bottom of the 1st inning led to a Wyatte Velasco grand slam and Dirty Vegas won the inning 13-7. They added 12 more runs in the bottom of the 4th to win in 5 innings 30-14, out homering Primetime 10-5. Velasco ended up 4-4 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in the win.

Over on Fenway Juno Athletics / LSR (NJ-Major) had their hands full with Fishers/All Hustle/Leacock Sports (PA-B) when Fishers got out to an early 17-9 lead. But Juno scored 9 in the 4th, out homered Fishers 16-9, and ended up winning 39-29. Veterans Greg Connell 6-7, 5 HR, 10 RBI, and Jason Branch 6-6 with 4 runs scored led the Juno offense.

Back on the softball field #1 it was a battle of ‘AA’ teams Worshams/HM/S&E/Demarini/RedAthlete (NC-AA) and WestPoint (IN-AA). Worshams flashed some good leather early on holding WestPoint to no runs in the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings, allowing their offense to catch up. In the bottom of the 6th Worshams outfielder Casey Scoggins hit a grand slam to give them a 24-23 lead. Both teams then put up double digit innings in the 7th and Worshams forced extra innings 34-34 on a Scott Hartling 3 run homer in the bottom of the 7th. In the 8th WestPoints Canaan Baum hit a leadoff double and Ryan Ramirez hit a 2 out shot off the Worshams shortstops glove to score the go ahead run. That ended up being the winning run 35-34 as WestPoints Ryan Mcclanahan made an incredible backhand play at shortstop to preserve the one run victory. Both teams used all 14 of their home runs and Ryan Ramirez, Brock Frentzel, and Logan Rogers all reached base safely 5 times in the win.

And over on Royal field (the show field), #1 seed Resmondo-SIS-Stub Term-RDD-S&S-LLC- (FL-Major) run ruled Vivid/Killbombers/LM/Cusos/HC/ALLIN (TX-A) 31-6 in 3 innings, out homering them 13-1. Kyle Pearson, Phil Matte, Quincy Latimore, Brad Reckart (who did the pitching all weekend), and Heath Barnes were all on base 3 or 4 times without making an out.

Quarterfinals:

The quarterfinals were played on Friday night under the lights as it cooled off just a little bit from the 90 degree day it was. On Fenway after Greinert got off to a 12-1 lead on Dan Smith, Dan Smith scored 9 in the bottom of the 2nd, and 11 more in the bottom of the 3rd, and went on to win by the run rule in 5 innings 32-17.

Shore OL takes on I-57 Roofing in the quarterfinals.

I-57 Roofing jumped on Shore OL, scoring 14 runs on just 2 home runs over on Royal field in the first 2 innings. Throughout the Conference Championships tournament, the higher seed was automatically the home team. Shore OL stayed in the game and hung a zero on I-57 in the top of the 4th and came in and scored 15 runs to take the lead on a Carlos Abrigo 2 run homer and a Joey Capparelli homer that went out of center field 400 feet! They scored 8 of the runs after the 2nd out and a dropped 3rd out in the outfield when the dusk grey sky was hard to see the ball. The outfield misplays led to a 40-34 Shore OL win as they out homered I-57 15-8. Ryan Honeycutt returning from injury was 6-6. Note: Streets was ejected in this game for throwing his bat towards the bat bucket and it went thru the netting completely outside the field. I say this not to embarrass Brandon but to let people know that a bat, like a dart, can fly through netting and even chain link fence when thrown.

Sam Campbell from Juno takes on Dirty Vegas in the quarterfinals.

At 9:15 PM over on Fenway Dirty Vegas put it on Juno Athletics. They scored 10 in the top of the 1st, 15 in the 3rd, and 11 in the 5th to win in 5 innings 44-25, out homering Juno 14-12. Leadoff hitter Travis Tucker was 6-6 with 5 runs. JD Paramore was 4-6 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. And Daniel Larson was 6-6 with 7 RBI in the upset win.

And in the nightcap over on Royal field WestPoint used some nice defense up the middle by pitcher Gavin Lambright, SS Ryan Mcclanahan, and center fielder Canaan Baum, to take a slim 18-11 lead on Resmondo thru 4 innings. But when WestPoint went down in order 1-2-3 in the top of the 5th, Resmondo answered scoring 13 runs on 4 home runs in the bottom of the 5th, and 12 on 5 in the bottom of the 6th to win without having to bat in the bottom of the 7th, 36-34. They had out homered WestPoint 14-9. Resmondo’s Kyle Pearson was 6-6 with 8 RBI in the win.

Saturday Recap

Semifinals. That Fenway fence is too short for the Hardcore ball to be used on this field.

Semifinals:

The semifinals were played on the two baseball fields at 1:15 PM central time on Saturday in 90 degree heat. Resmondo playing without Travis Clark and Steele Lewis who were “banged up” and without Jeremy Yates who didn’t make the trip. Resmondo jumped out to a 9-1 lead after 1 inning as shortstop Tyler Marshburn made a nice diving stop to end the top of the 1st inning against Shore OL. In the 2nd Shore OL scored 7 runs in the top of the inning and went to a 4 man outfield defensively on the huge field and held Resmondo to just 2 runs in both the bottom of the 2nd and bottom of the 3rd innings. In the bottom of the 2nd Daniel Cayton made a base running mistake for an out, and a Shore OL overthrow of 1st base in the 3rd inning hit a glove outside of the Resmondo dugout for another odd out. In the bottom of the 4th Resmondo took advantage of some more Shore OL throwing errors to score 13 runs, taking a 17-16 lead on a Bubba Mack 2 run homer. Resmondo ended up winning 32-29 without having to hit in the bottom of the 7th but they were out homered by Shore OL 11-10 in the game. Bradley Jones and Cory Briggs were each 5-5 in the victory.

In the other semifinal over on Fenway field Dirty Vegas jumped out to an early 15-7 lead. But Dan Smith scored 11 in the bottom of the 2nd, 14 in the bottom of the 5th and left Dirty Vegas on the field in the bottom of the 6th 45-30 out homering them 14-9. The Dan Smith lineup was 54-69 in the game. That hardcore ball was just too much for the short Fenway left field as home runs were free over there.

Resmondo’s Kyle Pearson in the semifinals against Shore OL.

Winner’s Final:

The winner’s final was played at 4:45 PM central time on Royal field. Resmondo came into the game against Dan Smith with an 8-6 record in the seasons series between the two teams. This was a wild, wide open game, with the Hardcore ball flying even though it was 90 degrees. Dan Smith batted around in the top of the 2nd. Dan Smith lefty 3rd baseman Joey Miller turned a 5-10-3 DP in the bottom of the 2nd with Dan Smith up 15-12. Both teams scored at least 2 runs in all 7 innings. Ryan Harvey who was 6-7 with 6 HR and 13 RBI in the game was hitting effortless home runs over 400 feet. Tyler Ervine and Josh Riley were setting the table in front of Harvey as Ervine went 7-7, and he hit for the cycle as did Tyler Storey. In the top of the 6th Dan Smith went up 42-27 and in the bottom of the 6th Ervine stabbed a grounder, tagged the runner going to 2nd, and flipped to rookie pitcher Jeremiah Yoder for the double play. Yoder a 21 year old rookie pitcher was picked up for the Conference Championship and the Major World Series by Dan Smith. He was the pitcher that pitched Team Indiana to their victory over Team USA at the Border Battle last June. He was also 5-6 in this game against Resmondo as Dan Smith held on to win 47-35. Both teams hit 15 home runs.

Ervine brought the defense at 1st base. He must have heard the discussion about the best 1st baseman on SoftballCenter.com Facebook page. 🙂

Loser’s Bracket:

Juno and WestPoint made some nice runs in the loser’s bracket. In the lower half of the loser’s bracket Juno beat JPS 37-17, Worshams 32-20, and Shore OL 37-35 on a walk off grand slam by Jason Branch. In the top half of the bracket WestPoint beat BeHappy 27-24, I-57 Roofing 23-8, Dirty Vegas 35-17, and then they upset Juno 46-40. So, Juno finished 4th. WestPoint was then giving Resmondo all they could handle in the loser’s final with defense by Baum in CF and a strikeout looking by veteran pitcher Shawn Jones leading the way. But some misplays in the bottom of the 5th led to a bases loaded double by Tyler Marshburn and an 11 run Resmondo inning and Resmondo was leading 35-30 when a lightning delay stopped the game. It was then decided that the tournament would be called off as threatening weather was in the area. The tournament was supposed to finish on Saturday night and it was getting late and with a 1 AM curfew the directors said the tournament would not be able to be finished. So, Dan Smith finished 1st, Resmondo 2nd, and WestPoint was third. Dan Smith jumped Juno in the points standings into the #2 seed for the USSSA Major World Series.

Resmondo’s Bradley Jones hits a bomb early in the loser’s bracket finals.

The USSSA Major World Series is October 7-10th. USSSA ‘B’, ‘A’, ‘AA’, and Major Worlds are all September 29 thru October 10th. Follow all of the action on ConferenceUSSSA.com, the USSSA Slowpitch YouTube page, or watch the livestream on USSSALive.com.

Travelling and hanging the livestream isn’t all fun and games. This all has to get to Fedex before the flight home.
