2013 USSSA Major World Series Report

new pic 4Resmondo-Specialty Tank/Worth wins the Major World Series as they went unbeaten and used a walk off homer by Ronald “Bubba” Mack in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton 33-31 in the final game!

The championship game was full of drama and may have been the best game of the 2013 World Series.  The game started with an incredible diving line drive stab by Resmondo 3rd baseman Jimmy Salas who then jumped quickly to his feet to double the runner off of first base.  In the second inning Brian Wegman hit a grand slam for Laservision and Kevin Kennington added a 3 run homer to push Laservision out to a 10-2 lead. Wegman then made the Laservision lead 14-3 on a 3 run homer in the top of the 3rd.  In the bottom of the 3rd Resmondo’s Greg Connell hit a 2 run homer to make it 14-5 and Laservision closed out Resmondo on a nice play by Scott Kirby at 1st base and a home run robbing catch by Wegman in left field. Laservision opened the door for a comeback when they failed to score in the top of the 4th and Resmondo came in and got a 3 run homer from veteran Howie Krause and a 2 run homer from the big lefty BJ Fulk to close the gap to 14-13. In the back and forth game that the championship became, Laservision put up another zero in the top of the 5th and Resmondo responded with 3 run homers from Fulk and Bubba Mack to cap a 9 run inning and a 22-14 Resmondo lead. The 6th inning started with Laservision loading up the bases and a controversial line drive stab at 3rd base that was called “no catch”. After a long discussion between umpires they got the call correct and everyone was safe.  That led to a Scott Kirby grand slam and a 23-22 Laservision lead which could have been more if not for Resmondo left fielder Jeremy Yates running down a ball in the outfield.  Resmondo came in and scratched across 3 runs to take a 25-23 lead to the 7th inning.

In the top of the 7th Laservision scored and impressive 9 runs as their top 4 hitters all got hits and the inning was highlighted by a 3 run homer by Kevin Kennington. That was followed by solo homer’s by Geno Buck and Brian Rainwater and then they took to the field with the gloves in the bottom of the 7th with an unexpected 31-25 lead.  Resmondo was on the ropes and staring an “if” necessary game in the face when Laservision got the first batter out.  Then a solo homer by Howie Krause got Resmondo going and they closed the gap to 31-29 on a 3 run homer by pitcher Andy Purcell.  Laservision then changed pitchers to the Hall of Famer Billy Messina to try and close out the game. BJ Fulk promptly singled, Jimmy Salas walked, and Don Dedonatis Jr brought Resmondo to within one run with a big one out double up the middle.  Bubba Mack then had a chance to end the game with the tying run on 3rd and the winning run on second and with one out he hit a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice and tied game at 31-31.  Laservision then intentionally walked Yates and got a fielder’s choice to end regulation tied.

In the 8th inning the top of the Laservision order which had been rock solid all tournament long went 1-2-3 and Resmondo returned the favor in the bottom of the 8th as they managed just one base runner.

In the 9th inning Laservision again went 1-2-3 with Andy Purcell stabbing his second Travis Clark liner up the middle of the game.  In the bottom of the 9th Resmondo started with a walk to Fulk then got two putouts before Bubba Mack deposited the game winning homer over the 385 sign in the left center field gap for the win, and the celebration was on for Resmondo who won their 8th World Title for sponsor Travis Resmondo. The agony of defeat hit  Laservision pretty hard as they had more than enough chances with the gloves and the bats to win the game.

Chaps/BWW/Worth/Buzini wins USSSA ‘B’ World Tournament

new pic 3The USSSA ‘B’ World Tournament is in the books and it was Chaps/BWW/Worth/Buzini from Mississippi taking the title as they went an undefeated 6-0 to with the prestigious title. They beat Team Adiktiv/Dynasty/ D2E /LS/TYJA 32-24 in the winner’s final and surprising B&B/Sears/BMW Insulation/Easton 25-16 in the finals. Chaps averaged a tournament best 22.6 runs per game in the heat and humidity that kept scores down. 31 teams took to the fields, 25 were ‘B’ teams, 6 were ‘C’ teams, and 19 of them were from the Nationwide Conference USSSA. The teams travelled from 18 different states!

The tournament started on Friday afternoon with a big upset as Bella’s/MOJO/Miken a ‘C’ team out of Ohio upset highly ranked Famous/Premier/Easton in a come from behind win 26-21. Also Valley Motors/ Reebok /Easton/VTS from Rhode Island smoked Head Hunters/OI Livingston/MWA 20-2 and then beat ASPNation.com/Easton 11-9 on a 2 out bottom of the 7th walk off homer by player/sponsor John Redihan.

Also on Friday night, #1 seed Pure Romance trailed B&B/Sears 16-13 in the 5th inning when they got a couple of nice defensive stops and a fight broke out which shifted the momentum and the game in favor of B&B/Sears 25-10.

The action was fast and furious as many of the top teams hopes of winning the ‘B’ World went up in smoke in the Florida heat on Saturday. FBI, Precision, Famous, and OC Swats among others knocked each other out of the double elimination tournament. When the sun finally went down it was Chaps and Team Adiktiv in the winner’s bracket championship game where Chaps won by 8 as both teams traded 3 and 4 run homers. On Sunday morning in the final 4 B&B/Sears used a huge last inning to beat Valley Motors after the score was tied going into the 7th. Then B&B/Sears upset big favorite Team Adiktiv in the loser’s bracket championship with constant offensive pressure. In the championship B&B ran out of gas and Chaps took home the big hardware. All of the top teams seemed to be healthy coming in and had their entire rosters which made for some great matchups.

2013 Nationwide Conference USSSA Championships

The 2013 Nationwide Conference Championships was won by Resmondo-Specialty Tank/Worth. Resmondo went 4-0 to win the tournament and beat Laservision/Desert Falls/Boombah/Easton 26-9 in the winner’s bracket championship on Saturday afternoon and 21-15 on ESPN in the championship on Sunday. Resmondo was paced by MVP SS Don Dedonatis Jr. and Defensive MVP Greg Connell. Resmondo won 3 of their games by the run rule and scored 20 or more in all 4 contests. Their defense held their 4 opponents to just 36 total runs or 9.0 runs per game. WOW!

The Nationwide Conference Championships began on Friday night with the top 16 teams in the nation playing in a “Big East” basketball style bracket where seeds 9-16 played in the first round. The winner’s moved on to the second round against seeds 5-8. The loser’s of the first two rounds dropped into a bracket of their own which is called the “Open” bracket. The winners moved on to play the top 4 seeded teams for the Nationwide Conference Championship!

The second round on Friday night is where things got interesting as all 4 of the lower seeded teams beat each of the 5 through 8 seeds! Albicocco beat Red’s Astros 22-7 after putting up 15 runs in the first inning. Taylormade upset Demarini 19-17. Chaps/Buzini beat Line Drive 16-15. And Pure Romance shocked GTL Doerflinger R&M 21-17!

In the third round the only upset was Taylormade who won their third game of the night 30-23 over a stunned Nordkap team. Resmondo, Laservision, and Shoppe all advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday.

The Major “pecking” order played out again as Resmondo beat Laservision twice and Laservision beat Shoppe twice during the weekend.

In the “Open” bracket which was filled with ‘A’ teams that had been upset by lower seeded teams, Demarini/Dirty went undefeated in the bracket to win it, beating GTL on Sunday by a run even though Demarini was missing 4 starters and actually had manager George Quinones playing and he helped contribute to the win. Line Drive Sportz was third and Red’s Astros was fourth.

All of the games in the Nationwide Conference Championships and the “Open” bracket were played at the Osceola County Stadium “back” fields. They are all large baseball fields and used the Dudley ZN Stadium ball. The weather was hot and humid with temperatures in the 90’s and the Stadium itself was unavailable because the infield is in the middle of a re-construction.

The games were competitive as there were only 8 run rule games out of the 36 played, and 16 of the games were decided by 3 runs or less!

Over at the Fortune Road Softball Complex there was a third tournament. This one was called the “Major World Series Conference Qualifier” where Nationwide Conference teams seeded 18-32 were invited to play for a berth to the Major. 7 teams accepted the invite and it was played out in a 3 game guarantee format. Team Adiktiv/Dynasty/ D2E /LS/TYJA defeated 3rd Street/Louisville Slugger 15-14 in the “if” game of the championship after 3rd Street had forced the second game by beating Adiktiv 13-12. Team Adiktiv went 3-1 in the tournament including a 31-8 win over ASPNation.com where Adiktiv scored an amazing 24 runs in one inning! 3rd Street took a much more difficult route to the championship as they lost their opener to B&B/Sears 16-12 on Friday night, then won 5 straight in the loser’s bracket. B&B/Sears with a few of their recent pickups was third, and Xtreme/Miken was fourth.

The catch of the weekend was made by Brian Logan the center fielder for Taylormade who made a fast diving catch in center field in the gap on Baugh Fords Matt Bunn to preserve Taylormades big win over Baugh in the first round. The best infield play was turned in by JD Genter at third base for GTL when he made a nice pick on a hard shot with his backhand and started at 5-10-3 double play to end the game against Line Drive Sportz in the loser’s bracket final of the “Open” bracket.

Nordkap/Suncoast Reebok is your ‘A’ World Champion as they navigated a field of 9 stacked but evenly matched ‘A’ teams to win the tournament. Nordkap lost in the winner’s bracket semi-finals 29-25 to Red’s Astros before making a 5 game run to the title including wins over Sonnys, Line Drive, Albicocco, and Reds Astros twice! Red’s looked to be in the driver’s seat after besting third place Albicocco in the winner’s bracket championship in extra innings 27-23 but were unable to score when needed in the top of the 7th of the “if” game against Nordkap and lost the championship 22-21.

In the semi-finals Albicocco’s Dan Sanchez hit a walk off homer to beat Demarini 29-27 and Red’s Astros beat Nordkap 29-24 in a spirited game with plenty of action and big home runs.

Then Red’s pulled off some huge defensive plays in the last two innings to beat Albicocco in the winner’s bracket championship 27-23 and Nordkap came through the loser’s bracket to meet Red’s again and pull off the impressive “double dip” with some aggressive offense scoring near double figure innings in all 4 of their Sunday wins.
